View Full Version : Just bought shiny used SV. No road tax yet or cover note yet...

Purchased it from the dealer (Portman) with no road tax ( Shows as unlicensed on the DVLA website) on Saturday afternoon. The V5C was sent off the same day but since I had no cover note for the insurance yet and the post office was closed anyway I couldn't tax it the same day.

Can I ride it or should I be hiding it under a cover down a back alley somewhere? The DVLA stuff about taxing and advice for buyers isn't very clear about exactly how this stuff should work.

stingy gits, I'd have thought a dealer would have taxed it for you!
I'd go back and have words, but then that just me!

dizzy, don't think I'll be buying anything else off of them. I wasn't particularly polite about the lack of tax. On Monday I put a deposit down and they said they were going to MOT it which I assumed meant they'd be kind enough to tax it too. They were not enormously helpful with anything really. Then again they are a Kwak dealer ;)

The V5C/2 New Keeper Supplement I have can be used for up to two months after the date on it. Does this mean I have a two month period in which I should keep it off the road or a two month period in which I can ride it around with impunity?

Try taxing it on line. If the V5 has been amended by DVLA you should be able to do it.
Or, once you have your insurance, you could use the new keeper slip and do it at the post office.

Doubt the DVLA will have received the V5 by now. Been looking at some other random forums online and it seems that basically riding without tax is baaaaaad. *sigh* Bloody annoying dealership. Guess I will wheel it into the front garden and get everything above board before I start using it. And I was so looking forward to a last minute bimble before I had to head back to work on Tuesday :(

That means you can use that to tax it yourself without the full logbook. Just take it to the post office with MOT and insurance docs and they should be able to sort it.

Yeah but no cover note from insurance company yet. Presumably I could get them to email me it and print it out? I'm sure I have a printer around here somewhere...

Thanks for the help. Bloody DVLA stuff drives me mad.

The post office will only accept an original. A copy will not do, unless it's a good copy and you pretend it's the original....;)

A print of a PDF isn't a copy ;)

Sorry, didnt read your first post properly. But I think most would agree that the DVLA stuff can be frustrating.

Oh fail, Post Office wouldn't take my print of the cover note. Suppose I should have expected that really. Just had a look over the bike and it doesn't even appear to have a tax disc holder on. I think I am going to make a phone call to Portman Motorcycles this afternoon :-/ Useless people. Now I probably won't be able to ride my bike for a week :(

I'm a bit confused, they said they'd MOT it , and they did. MOT is NOT roadtaxing. They can't roadtax the bike without your insurance document. So it's Portmans fault that you didn't check to see if it was taxed? Nearly all dealers take off the old roadtax.

Lesson learnt perhaps.

Perhaps, would have been nice of them to point that out though. It wasn't SORN and was off the road and untaxed when I bought it. *shrug* It's all a bit of a mess really. Surely they should have been able to tax it with a V5C and a V11. I don't think they need *my* cover note, they should have it insured on the dealership right so they could have taxed it right? Once it's got tax on the tax doesn't vanish when you sell it, it moves with the owner right? I'll be on the road eventually I suppose :D

Why would a dealer go to the expense of taxing a bike that may sit in their showroom for a year or more? They don't have to by law, as trade plates cover the legal requirement for test rides.

It could well be that whoever sold the bike to the dealers kept the tax disc and cashed in any remaining months left anyway.

You can tax with the New Keepers bit of the Reg doc. Insurance docs take a couple of days normally.

Seem to remember post offices accepting FAX'd docs - but it was a long time ago and could be wrong or they could have been wrong etc.

Note for future:

"Alright - stick 6 months tax on it and you've got a sale...."

No vehicle can be taxed without a cover-note or insurance certificate. Keeping vehicles held in stocked is a waste of money, this is why dealers use trade plates for test rides etc.

I wouldn't expect a used vehicle's price to be "on the road", and if you'd asked for tax to be included, they'd have been clear about needing your cover note first.

As for riding, until you've got a cover note and tax, then you're taking a risk... if you're comfortable with it, then that's your choice. Obviously if you rode without any cover, then you're a selfish stupid idiot.

The PDF won't have the watermarks that the original copy will though, as you no doubt found out. :)

I live in a rural area, and may of ridden my bike when it was brand new, before I held a valid licence (so no insurance/tax either). Then again, I may of not done that.

As I'm always telling my kids, actions have consequences. If you're prepared to accept the consequences, feel free to do the associated action.

Blimey steady on chaps, hes got the insurance just not got the covernote yet.So the vehicle needs tax which can be got when the covernote arrives.Technically theres a fail to display for a few days, but as long as the tax is bought properly there shouldnt be an issue in the real world surely?

Since I commute into the congestion charge zone and the area around my office is generally swarming with parking wardens I think I'll avoid riding it during the day for now. Hopefully I'll have a genuine tax disc by the weekend so everything should be good for a bimble on the weekend! I'll just have to be a patient child until then :(

Have you tried taxing the vehicle online, as their data base will tell them automatically if your insured and the vehicle is mot'd so you wouldn't need the cover note and it may well have a section on there for new keepers that haven't got the logbook through yet, you may even find that you are registered as the new keeper of the bike depending how long ago the v5 was sent off.

Not got the V5 back from the DVLA yet so I can't tax online. I have to go to the post office with the V5C/2 New Keepers slip, Cover Note and MOT certificate to get tax.

You can still try DVLA without V5 - may be delayed in post.
Stealer probably only sends them out once a month anyway

Got my cover note this evening. Going to make a detour to the post office on the way to work tomorrow :D I think I'll come harass people up in Soho next Friday.
