I''m buying one pretty soon (i hope).
Anyone have any experience of them? What to look for, or avoid? Or whether to sack them in altogether and get something else!
I'm really drawn to the 93 model, with the twin headlights :D I know more the same money buys a newer model, but I think those twin lights look ace!
Anyway, anyone with any experience of them, please give me some jibber-jabber about it :)

Never liked the urban tiger colours, yet they seem to get voted as the best colour scheme ever, year after year.

you will be lucky to find a 93 (16 year old) blade that has not been thrashed to death, and dropped a few times
dont get an import, as they are restricted (depending on where its from)
i would be looking for a 98-99 last of the carbs, or even a 929 (as long as the recalls have been done) if you have £2k............ £3k would get you a 2002 954cc (like mine)

Yeah, I'm being a bit put off by the ones with 8+ owners! Amazing how many of them are still on the road with 30k+ miles though :)

Over 30k and I'd expect a bill to sort brakes + suspension + bearings straight away. Seems worth the extra cash for a low miler. Love the round light models though
Not a fan really. I think they look too old.

errrrrrrr they are old,
Well i dont think your blade looks old?
mines not, well not that old, but the ones G2D is looking at are about 15 years old

One of the few supersports bikes I like, seems to have some character, shame suzuki at the time were making the lardy rsed GSXR-Ws.

It wouldn't surprise me if a low mileage bike had the same problems, and would be prepared to spend a weekend stripping and sorting any bike of this age.

I take my words back. A few weeks of looking at blades, and I suddenly see what it is that everyone sees. Gorgeous

urban tiger fireblade = great name, great bike, it looks fast standing still :)

not too keen on the 99's though

+1 On what Hovis said.
I wouldn't say don't buy one, but be very, very careful. Any bike of that age has been through a number of owners hands, and even though the 'Blade has always been well known for it's durability, anything of that age has history sometimes LOTS of history and often it will be hard to ascertain fully what that history was.
That said if it looks OK, rides OK, everything works right and the owner makes the right noises when you wheel out the probing questions there's no reason not buy and aged bike.
If you really must have one look at lots before you get your money out - there's still plenty around.

Yeah, good advice thanks
Going to see a blade tomorrow. He's had it 3-years which bodes well. I tend to avoid anything with - stickers, rim tape, tiny plates, super loud exhaust, billions of owners. It's a buyers market at the moment :D

Sack it and buy something that there won't be 20 of at every bike meet.

Old bikes never go out on ride outs! It's like walking in to a showroom going out on a sunny day. You almost see herds of white and blue GSXRs! (see me try and justify this here? ;) )

When my RD is finished it will be coming out on the road. And I will do my damnedest to keep up with all modern shiit that comes along :-P
Same with GSXR, but I know that will kick most modern stuff into the weeds (when I have built a motor to my specification muahaha)

I had a '96 in White/Red/Yellow/Purple, great bike but it Didn't half have a annoying induction noise, all the early Foxeye blades had it.... sound's exactly like a little-end when you're riding, really high pitched, it had me baffled for ages when I'd just got it, gave it to a few mates to ride & they all said the same thing... little-end, then one day I caught a guy pulling up & gettin' off one same year as mine & i grabbed him and said hey I've got a question for you..... and before I'd asked him he just said Yeah I know what your gonna say, don't worry they all have that high-pitched little-end noise its induction related.... supposed to have cured it on the '97 onwards models, (the mustard/mauve and White/Black/Red models)

Ahhh. Worth knowing thanks :)
Just been to see one.
STUNNING CONDITION FOR YEAR!! ,ONE THING THAT STOPS THIS BIKE BEING MINT IS A SMALL DENT AND LIGHT SCRATCH ON THE TANK
Had been down the road obviously, had a chunk out of the frame and swingarm, and deep scratches over the tail. Now I'd buy that bike ... but the price needs to match the condition - it's not 'stunning'! hehe.

its amazing what some people class as stunning.
With buying an old bike, chances are its been dropped at somepoint, but as long as you can find one thats only been dropped and not gone for the 60mph side slide.
those black/silver 97/98 ones look so nice.

A slide is not problem, a mate of mine slid his gsxr11 at over 100mph and rode it home. It's the highsides and hitting something heavy that does the damage!
yeah, but i wouldnt buy a bike with a chunk out of the frame and swingarm
theres plenty out there (not in tiger colours though)

Depends what sort of a chunk it is to me, it'd have to be cheap though

Exactly. And the price didn't reflect the damage.
Some fireblades with 25k look showroom fresh still.
Depends what sort of a chunk it is to me, it'd have to be cheap though i dont think i would want it with any sort of chunk, unless like you say the price was right
