Can people please stop using text speak, and start using the Queens English when writing a post innit:rolleyes:.
It appears of late that there are rather a lot of either uneducated people posting, or people who are just too damn lazy to use a spellchecker.
I am really having difficulty reading a lot of posts on here lately and its really hacking me off:smt073
Please accept my apologies to those who genuinely have difficulty8-[.

And you gave me a right giggle.
Come on, we all do it and there are times when the odd miss spelling is done in jest or to go with the flow.
There have been posts where the word, "are" has been used uniformly in place of the correct, "our". That annoys me a little as I have to work harder to understand the sentence, but not everyone has had a decent education unfortunately.
however it does not take a genius to know that when you are writing something you should use proper grammar to show the start and end of each sentence or paragraph and a capital letter at the start of a place name or persons name and to construst your sentences so that people could read them out loud with enough full stops or commas to be able to breathe on a regular and therefore life sustaining basis and so on
Now, the odd gramatical mistake does not bother me too much, but to just write in text speak or fail entirely to use any grammar makes reading sometimes difficult.
One can't tell if your being sarcastic or not
one one
Suprisingly for me, it was entirely serious. Not a hint of sarcasam in that post.
This one however...

Now call me daft, but I would consider it a more "decent" education to be aware of grammar/punctuation/spelling, but not be too hung up on it.
My brain is fully capable of reading a sentence where the word "our" is replace with "are" incorrectly, and it's still easily understandable. Just as when I see a word where the first letter should be a capital, I can forgive the author for missing the shift key.
Also, when I'm reading aloud & someone hasn't used proper punctuation, I prioritise breathing over reading, so when I need to stop to breathe, I do.
Not having a pop, t'is just my tuppence. :) (sorry, couldn't resist)

I think locking a thread with the reason "Incomprehensible" then deleting it 24 hours later is the answer.
I think we all can and do make allowances for any non-native English speakers, but if Fillipe whos Portugese can do a fine job of posting here, some "local" from Essex, Yorkshire or even South Wales can make the same effort.
I'm afraid it's a disease that's spreading, text speak is fine on a phone where it allows you to fit more into a message, but shouldn't be used anywhere else.
Grammar is just dying these days I'm afraid :(

I agree regarding the use of poor spelling and text speak but what irritates me more than anything else is people who say "me" instead of "I" ie. "me is thinking of coming with you" or "me might make this one". I think to myself "my god... is a toddler writing this"???
One had a similar debate on this subject recently at home.
I regularly hear things like "I seen Jane at the shops today". It drives me mad. I was tempted to buy a book about grammer that was for sale in HMV over christmas but then I thought "nah".

Exactly. These days, any child who doesn't apply themselves or performs badly academically is automatically given an excuse, whether it's a poor home life, undiagnosed Dyslexia, Autism or something else.
Now, I'm not disputing the existence of these issues/illnesses, and some children are without a doubt victims of bad luck when it comes to the gene pool, but there is to my mind a huge amount of over-use of these conditons as excuses.
When I was at school, there were academically gifted pupils, athletically gifted pupils and normal all-rounders. Everyone had strengths and weaknesses.

Yes I often think it is laziness. They are either to lazy to make an effort to write an intelligible post or were to lazy to make an effort at school and now know no better.
In my opinion nothing makes you appear poorly educated or thick more than an inability to read or write to a basic standard. I know we all have to make allowances for those with genuine problems, but it seems to me (and has already been posted) that these conditions are bandied about as excuses for poor academic performance by those that just cannot be arsed.
In fact, after reading some posts on an undergraduate forum recently, I despair of the level reading and writing skills that is acceptable in schools currently.

It annoys me aswell, but at the end of the day some people have poor reading and writing abilities... and some people are just thick.
I think that a lot of the trouble these days is that some people just aren't bothered.
I think its AMAZING that some people can do this kind of thing, and that its terrible that they end up getting judged as being "wrong".
They are just different, not better, not worse.
Spot on. Excellent post.
I hate 'should/could/would of' instead of 'should/could/would have'
So ignorant:D
I've just thought of a few others that really get on my wick.
One being the use of 'been' instead of 'being'.
Another being the number of times I see people write 'I can' when they mean 'I can't'.
'Alot' instead of 'a lot'
'Breaks' instead of 'brakes'
I understand the annoyances with text speak. It can be difficult to follow and, has only come about due to the mobile phone technology and the need for a short hand version of English.
All languages evolve whether it is a good thing or a bad thing who knows. It seems that currently English language is evolving purely down to the fact that the following generations are either too lazy or not being educated properly.
For myself I used to consider that I was taught to a reasonable standard of English after all I can read, and I can write English well enough to converse and have held employment in reasonable positions of needing language skills to negotiate.
However, it is only when I had to learn a new language that I realised that in fact my English education was falling seriously short and, what is more it is falling shorter than the education in European countries.
For example, the structure of English language was not taught to me in any great depth, which makes learning a new language incredibly difficult. Not only do I have to learn the terms for the grammatical differences that I am learning in the new language, but I also have to learn the same term in English and what it is. For example subjunctives, present continuous infinitives, present subjunctives. All of these elements of grammar make up a language and to learn another language I am finding that I have to learn in English how these terms work, and what they do before I am able to transfer it into the learning language.
This isn’t because I am stupid (oi!!! careful now!!) or that the younger generation is, it´s clearly a sever hole in our English education.
I do suffer from dyslexia, but this wasn't discovered until I was 18 it was actually 1 week from sitting my final A-Level exams they did some test's and said yes actually the reason you find spelling and english difficult is that you are dyslexia. But its to late now to try and get extra time or mark's on your A-Levels. I didn't want to do that either and more to the point!!!!!
I made a decision when i went to Uni that I had got this far without their help why do I need it now.
The only time I used the But I'm dyslexi was to get the computer that my local LEA paid for, for students that went on to University that had a learning disability. I was prepared to pay for my own laptop for my work, but my dad made a point that he had paid council tax etc....... that why shouldn't I get part of the pot.
I could of got lots of extra help at Uni, my coursework to be looked at before submission and any mistakes to be corrected for me to then correct it. A covering letter to then go over the very same coursework to say that this student suffers from a learning disability do not mark down for poor grammer and spelling. But to be honest I didn't want to.
It sometimes takes me a while to post as I have to re-read what I have wrote and sometimes spell check words in Microsoft Word. Or if drew is with me I will ask him how you spell certain words. But i try my best! :D and hope i don't upset any of you that have to try and read my post's
Now as for shorting of words........... :smt075 is what you get. I can get sent text messages from my cousions or mates that to be able to read what they say I have to read them out loud!!!
I notice a bit on here but kind of gloss over it (read it out loud) and then I know what they are on able!
This is going to make me seem really old now (and i'm not!) But i think one of the reason's is a change of times. We received an email from a new employee the other day and me and mel (who work on the payroll) could not read what he had wrote. We read the 6 digets then 8 so we have figured that this must be his bank details. :smt011 That was a business email as well.
Anyway I think I have gone off topic and back on and don't think i answers the OP. But when do i!!!!
EDIT: If anybody wants to quote this and amend any mistakes I would be most grateful...... as Drew is not here! :p;)
