I know what you are saying on the face of things it is over priced however I would only have bought a 749S in Yellow with Termi's. There are 749's out there for Private sale for sub £4K but in 6 months I haven't come across exactly what I wanted so I am happy to pay that amount. I know not everyone would but I am.

Thanks for all your congrats so far, It makes me smile :)

Isn't there a mod you can do with the plates to quieten it(not that you Duc lovers mind noisy clutches;-) ) but I recall a conversation with Regency on the Hardy bikers about it. He'd done it, and it sounded better to my ears at least...lol, not that I'm knocking the distinct racket:rolleyes:

At least with having that nice fairing round the open clutch cover your less likely to get a pair of flared troosers eaten!

Do they do one in yellow?

Link doesn't work... feckin OSS won't let you link out... Meh.

Try that. You'll need to get an oil cooled GSXR engine to do it, but that seems like a fair cop to me...

nice 1, cant wait to show you howmuch power the RED ducatis have over the broken yelow ones ;)

you make the clutch quiet by putting a worn out friction plate behind all the "good" clutch and friction assy, i might do it, iv never really liked the sound... but i must admit, it is growing on me.... just a little:)

and if youve got the termi system, youll need some ear plugs, i need to get some done myself, im going def!

Haha you can show me if you can catch my Yellow one up.

Quiet clutch??? NEVER

Yeah I have the termi system but don't worry, I always wear ear plugs on rides anyways. I ears are my livelyhood so can't damage them. Thats why sometimes I may just stop on a rideout as I probably have either forgotten to put them in, forgotten to fasten my helmet or have lost my wallet :) Ask Pete and Lissa :D

am I right in thinking that the latest dukes (749/848) are more reliable than the previous ones? I am very tempted to pick up a 848 in a few years (maybe 6 months if someone wants to get me a nice 25th bday prezzi!! :D)

Errm I'm not sure they are you know. Ducati's have always suffered the reputation but if you service them like you are supposed to you shouldn't really have a problem. Of course there are exceptions to the rule but generally I think the people that winge about them being unreliable are the people who expect the thing to run and run and run without proper servicing.

I was looking at 848's and in a few years time I think ill have one in my garage but it was too much right now to went for the older 749.
I was talking to a fella who had a 1098S and his missus had an 848. He said 'hand on heart the 848 is the best bike I have ever ridden by a long way'

16-04-09, 03:45 PM
When do you pick it up?

Mr Speirs
16-04-09, 03:49 PM
Depends when I move into a new place with a Garage. Currently I live in a flat with no secure parking so my bike stays at work.
It could be the beginning of May going to look at a new place tonight fingers crossed.

That said however I can't insure it until July. I don't get a years no claims until July when my SV insurance runs out. Then I will then put both on the same policy. If I insured it now it would cost £978 FC but then in July I would need to reinsure the SV and wouldn't be able to utilise my NCD on the Duke. :(

zsv650
16-04-09, 03:51 PM
wow how much is the insurance with 1 years ncb if you dont mind me asking then.

Mr Speirs
16-04-09, 03:53 PM
With 1 years NCB it went down to £600 odd.

zsv650
16-04-09, 04:01 PM
that's not so bad then specially for a duke.

Mr Speirs
16-04-09, 04:17 PM

TBH thats still not a bad price for it!

Most quotes I got for the falco were above a grand FC and thats with 4 year NCB!!! There were only 3-4 companies on Tesco compare offering under a grand

Yeah I was tempted just to do it so I could ride it but I had a long think about it. I would end up having to fork out £1k on insurance for the duke then in July re-insure the SV for however much extra about £400 FC where as if I wait until July I can get both bikes on the same policy for around the £700 mark.

The other thing is I am away for work for all of June and half of July anyways so double the insurance cost just to ride it for a month doesn't work out.

my mate has just passed his DAS and is searching for one of these as his first bike lol. i keep telling him it's way to much for a first bike but his mind is made up. he reckons "they only go as fast as that right hand wants it to" lol, which is true but all he has to do is mess up a gear change and he's in S**t street. apart from the rediculous acceleraton/power what other problems would he have riding this beast after just passing his test?

yorkie_chris
25-04-09, 10:32 AM
The insurance prices for a start. If he respects it a little he'll be fine. Also stalling it at junctions/dropping it at a standstill and other funny stuff like that.

A quick google-fu suggests about 100bhp. Only the same as a 600 so shouldn't be an animal at all.

fizzwheel

Depends on his age, but with no experience and no no claims, his insurance is probably going to clobber him.

Personally I wouldnt, Its not the power or the weight and he's right its only as fast as your right wrist, base model 749 is around the 100bhp mark IIRC, the 749S is 116bhp. The power isnt ridiculous. Its very smooth and the delivery is lovely, but its very un twin like, its thrives of revs and theres a definate power band at 6000rpm and once at that point it spins round to the rev limiter very quickly.

Its one hell of a focused bike. It needs concentrating on and its not very forgiving to ride. You need to be in the right gear at the right time and posiive with the controls. Riding it slowly is not fun, 1st gear is very tall which mean low speed or around town is a clutch slipping fest. 30 / 40 mph is still first gear terrirtory, 2nd and 3rd are no good at this kind of speed. The bike chatters and vibrates back up through the transmission its really horrible to ride. The suspension is stiff and it takes a little effort to make it turn. For a newbie rider I'd say its probably not confidence inspiring or building. It can feel a little vague through the front end until you learn to trust it, but once turned in its very very stable.

Ride it fast and its brilliant, ride it slow or in it the wrong gear its horrible. It really belongs on sweeping A roads with no traffic on them or on a race track.

Personally for a first bike I wouldnt. But if he is determined to buy it let him get on with it. I would suggest he gets a test ride and makes his own mind up.

Something like an SV is going to be a much better first bike, it'll build his confidence and skills. Also a couple of years on a less focused bike will also give time to build up his non claims as well. Which will repay massive dividends later on in his riding career.

HTH

he knows the insurance will sting him but don't think he has got any quotes yet. i've known him for years and would say he's by no means a petrol head so can't imagine him blasting around on the bike until he is very confident on it. i bought my sv650s and made lots of little errors with gears/clutch/throttle like every new rider does at first but the sv is so forgiving i've had no problems. but on a bike with 30-40 more bhp and a harder clutch and gearbox to deal with i may of been in trouble. cheers for response, i'll let him know what to expect. just don't want him to buy a bike he don't like or get badly injured riding but if he does get one i'll be first in the queue to have a go on it:D. BTW he's 29 and didn't ride a bike till he went for his CBT on the saturday, think he had a lesson on the monday, started his DAS on wednesday, then passed friday lol.

Well I have shown it to a few friends. One of which is a biker and he was very taken back, even though I'd shown him pictures he was overwhelm at its beauty in the flesh.
The other was my work colleague who had the same reaction, although he had seen the pictures was bowled over by it in real life.
And then, here's the kicker, my boss, who always takes the urine outta me biking and had sorta negative feeling about bikes in general, called me from Budapest telling me he had been in the office in the morning and saw it and just wanted to tell me that he thought the bike was extremely nice :)

Seal of approval all round :)
