View Full Version : HHmmmm which bars?

Ruthja2801

Been out on the bike again today for about an 1/2 hour ride, wanted to go out for longer but my hands were killing!

I suffer from carpal tunnel and have had a couple of ops on me hands! I think the more i ride the more my hands will get used to it, but i still wanna see if it helps the change the bars!

I think the bars on are stock and find that all the weight is on my hands, I need some bars that come further forward, but nothing that looks outta place!

Any ideas?

Thanks

Are you sure all the levers are on in the right place. Sometimes if they are adjusted it gets better. I think they're supposed to be inline with your elbows or something. Fizzwheel explains it better.

Although at the moment, there is a small amount of getting used to a bike too. I've got absolute knackered shoulders and if things aren't set up correct I have similar problems to what you have with carpel tunnel

I think, i need to bendthe clutch lever in abit to make the reach for that better, but i think its more to do with the position of the bars, its feels very heavy on my hands! Gonna stick it out for now, but got a ride up to scotland (over 2 days) at the end of june and i don't think my hands will thank me!

Ruth, have you tried gripping the tank with your knees and taking some of the weight off your hands/wrists?
Stompgrip traction pads (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/StompGrip-Anti-Slip-Tank-Pad-Suzuki-SV650-SV1000-03-07_W0QQitemZ350120464174QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_Moto rcycle_Parts?hash=item350120464174&_trksid=p4634.c0.m14.l1262) help with this methinks.

I've heard that before, might be worth a try, my legs don't cover the tank much, but i'll try it tomorrow and report back! Thank you

don't buy stomp grip, it looks really ugly and pants, maybe for the racers on here and like the look of a tatty bike. They certainly don't compliment a neat and tidy bike. Although you can get them in tiny spots that you can put on.

Just grip the tank....its freeeeeee!

Where in Scotland are you going in June BTW?:-k

the levers should point slightly downward so you dont have to move your wrists while operating the levers that will help your issues alot

When you sit on the bike put your hands on the grips and rest your fingers on the top of the levers. Now, what you want is an imaginary straight line running from your elbows, along your forearms, through your wrists and along your fingers. That apparently is the most comfortable. However, mine are set slightly above that line because I have short fingers.

You riding a naked Ruth ?

Forget that . just saw your signature :)

I have seen some risers somewhere that bring the bars back a little so there is more weight on yer bum rather than on the wrists and hands , I shall have a rummage .

Ok rummaging over and I found these , will this help you out ?

http://www.1tail.com/sa/p/Suzuki_Bandit_600_Bandit_1200_and_SV650.htm

Ignore that they are not for the pointy Naked , that page had no picture so I sent you the link and picture for the Curvy naked , but typically the same thing ;)

A tank bag to lean on for longer trips helps as well I find.

Hmm think there just slighty lower than the grip! Is that not lower enough?

yorkie_chris
04-04-09, 06:39 PM
Trace the line down your arm, mine end up being way below horizontal, but I'm not a special shortrse.

Some blocks of ally would work to lift the risers up a bit, or the things that badger linked to...

Mmmm i may have to higher the lever slight with having short fingers as well!

Badger they would be perfect, where would i find em in the uk? Would save havving to change the bars! Its says raises and takes the bars back? Now is that back towards you or further away? I'm guess closer else it ain't gonna benefit!!

Are they easy to fit or tricky?

Depends which way round you bolt them on!

Straight up ones...

Otherwise I'm sure there's someone about with more metalwork machinery than me who could make some...

Those which badger posted can be fitted to bring the bars towards the rider or further away.

I'm guessing the pic is on one risers i.e the top and bottom!!!?!!!

Would raising the bars be enough or am i best to get some that bring the bars closer?

I fitted Pazzo adjustable levers as my hand would cramp on the clutch, and it's much better. See how you get on though-it's probably also getting used to the bike, you may find it doesn't bother you once you are more used to it?

Glad you got the height licked, good on you;)

If I was you I would raise the bars a touch and bring them a lot closer to yourself , I have the ABM comfort kit on my Pointy , I suffered terribly with cramps and the tinglies when I was using clip-ons , they made the bike for me those bars did ........ without having bars I would have sacked the bike . If your weight isn`t on your hands you will be a lot comfier , be happier when coming to a standstill as well , your body weight will be better supported by your pelvis as well instead of the wrists/hands .

I shall snuffle about on the net and find you a sorted pair for your bike Ruth , may take me a while as I`m having a bit of an "Off" evening :)

http://www.streetfighterstore.co.uk/angled_riser_adapters/583

That`s one option I have seen , I`m very friendly with these people and can make an enquiry as to whether they would fit a naked SV , they go under your original risers and you put longer bolts in , will bring your bars back nearer to you without adding height .

Ruthja2801
04-04-09, 09:14 PM
Ah bless you thank you! I have tried looking but haven't got an clue what i'm looking for!

Them ones look good! So you think i just need to come forward? I don't need up and forward?? I am quite hunch over having short arms, but the only thought would be if its lifts em up will it make it harder for me to hold the bike up with the bars being higher!

Think they might do the job and not expensive either! Good job!

Not quite sure they would fit though as I have just noticed that the SV risers have a radius on the bottom (half circle) so I think they secure into the top yoke better . I have seen Genmar ones for the Naked that give a bit of extra height and also bring the bars back a bit ........ but they are £88 ....... eeeeeeek :(

I also suffered from wrist ache. In my case I've tried different techniques in order to keep the weight off my wrists. Apart from adjusting the levers I also found that not clenching the bars but having a relaxed grip helped. I also found that when decelerating by using my stomach muscles and grabbing the tank with my knees I could keep the pressure/weight off my wrists. I know that Stompgrips may not be aesthetically to everyone's liking but I am of the 'form follows function' camp and can honestly say that they are a great bonus in stopping me sliding forward. It requires herculean strength to grip a tank (that is naturally slippery) in order to stop oneself sliding forward. By applying all of the above I can now ride considerable distances without getting wrist ache. Certainly cheaper than buying heli-bars.

:) If you pick up the Gen Mar up and back risers from me, at $99.95 and have me ship them to you as a gift, for $12, would that bring your total down to where it makes sense?

I provide them at that price at SV Racing Parts, to forum members, which is under the price on my store, via PayPal.

Let me know if that helps, not sure how the exchange is working for you right now,

Enjoy the ride, and best regards,

Hello again Blair,

I not long got my foot peg raisers from yourself!!

HA!!

Don't know weather its early or just me but whats a Gen Mar???

xXBADGERXx
05-04-09, 07:13 AM
Genmar is a brand , they make risers for a lot of bikes and specialise in risers for sportsbikes , I bought some riser rearset footpeg plates from SV-Racing-Parts and then flipped them upside down to allow myself a bit of extra leg room on my SV .

Exchanges rates would make the Risers come to £67.54 and the postage would come to £8.11 ....... that`s not bad .

I thought they would only fit a Naked SV as they have a Bump on the bottom that enables them to sink into the top Yoke a bit to provide a bit more turning force without putting stress on the bolts (a bit like a key in a keyway)

Yes they pull towards you much more than that.....but unfortunately you have to lengthen cables.

thank you for your help!

The risers were about £90 (ouch!...yes I know!) and the cables were a nightmare because I had to find someone who could alter the lengthen cable. The local dealership that did my Guzzi cables many years ago stopped doing it so I did some detective work and found a custom bike builder locally (but he has now gone bust unfortunately) who did it for £15 or so.

On my Curvy (I don't know what it's like on your pointy) the brake hose is in two parts and the bottom one is a couple of inches longer so we bought one of those (about £40) and bunged that on up the top end.

I could do with lengthening the throttle cables a little more to get the optimum ergonomic position for me but it took me months to find the other guy to lengthen them so I cant be ar$ed to start looking again! hth
