View Full Version : Alternative headlights for a naked?

Magnum

I'm still debating whether to get a naked or a faired, and was wondering what alternative headlights are available for the SV, and if they are actually practical and work well in the dark. I quite like the idea of twin headlights, and after a search found a thread on the dominators. What others are there?

Thanks.

If its a pointy, go fully faired.
If its a curvy go naked.

Simples....;)

Im starting to have second thoughts about the headlight on the nakeds, and the pointy frame on naked, but i dont like the silver curvy frame. Theres no pleasing me...

I like the headlights and the black curvy frame on the 'bike that has been posted too many fricken times'. But the frame doesnt come in black, and i imagine it would be a lot of hassle to spray it.

Thanks. Its certainly unique, and suits the pointy. I take it the indies are built in?
I like it.

Anything but the dominators, mine were rubbish and got thrown across the garage floor shortly after riding my bike back at night from Lincolnshire 30mph all the way. It was like riding blindfolded. Still looking for a stacked twin projector set up for mine but cant find one anywhere.

that is a very nice front end am impressed!;)

looks far better in the second pics, looks like you've turned the brackets round and moved the light unit upwards

Amp seal of approval on that one :p

The headlight suits the pointy frame, do you know the name of the unit and was it just a case of putting in different (H3) bulb holders?

It would also mean losing my front Rizoma Zero 11s which I love. Are the built in indicators LEDs?

I love that bike but it takes a fair bit of work to pull off dominator lights. It looks hell of a lot better with upside downy forks, and you just generally need to make your bike look a bit meaner or you'll look like you've just plonked on some twin lights so you can call it a streetfighter.

It may be boring, but as I understand it the Standard Single Bowl headlight on the SV, be it pointy or curvy, is the best solution to the problem of lighting the road ahead of you when its dark.

I just think it looks a little old fashioned, but i understand its probably the most practical. Surely the dominators will be brighter than my CG candles?

Dave - i plan to do a fork conversion at some point, and i will try and get a suitable flyscreen (or whatever you would class that bit of plastic above the lights). Perhaps it would be best to wait till i do the fork conversion before getting the lights...
(yes i know im planning well ahead here :D)

You are not thinking right :)

Yes they will beat the CG for lighting, but in turn, the stock light will beat the dominators.

Bear in mind that you will also be travelling faster on a vehicle that takes longer to stop than on your CG and then the Dominators probably come down to the same ball-park as the CG ones.

So dont ask are they better than what I have, ask are they the best I can possibly put on the front of my bike.

I will also add that I have no personal experience with either of the SV options, but I know I heard BigApe commenting on someone else's bike yesterday saying along the lines of "I had them on my SV - they were rubbish, I put the stock one back on"

Would there be bulb upgrades you can buy? BBadger said his bulbs were crap, but new ones sorted them out.

Get a faired then, nothing wrong with the lights on the curvys faired or the pointys, you can just improve them even more by putting in a set of Osram nightbreakers. OR buy a HID kit for just over £100. OR you could by a gladius for a more upto date naked look - if you could call it that.

Cheers

Putting better bulbs in the Dominators WILL make them better.

Putting the same bulbs in a better light will also make that better too, so making them STILL better than the Dominators....

Every meter you can see further is extra time to react.......

Dominators are rubbish frankly. If you want duals, go with Buell- the dual headlights off the City X etc (as seen on TLR709's bike up the page) are pretty decent. Still not as good as a big round headlight but then, not much is. An awful lot of aftermarket headlights are designed for being seen, not for seeing.

KTM duke 2 has a nice-looking headlight unit with pretty effective projectors in it... Pyramid make a similiar (uglier) unit called the Mantis as well. Quite good options I think. Or, the Harley V-rod headlight is quite popular with the SV Rider guys, I like it...

You can get high and low beam projector units from busters, about £20 each... Will a projector beam melt a perspex pyramid headlight protector? Jus' thinkin' aloud here...

How about slapping on the stacked lights off a KTM Duke II ?
Spray the outside edges the same colour as your bike and Bingo-Bango ...... job done :)

Ok then , there is a Buell headlight that one of the Maltese guys on here has done , that looked sweet , but then again you would be just copying somebody elses Idea then rather than trying something of your own and making that work .......... will keep an eye peeled for something unique for ya :)

Zunkus's bike. But then I suppose you could say he was copying Erik Buell :D

Top fairing off a ZXR740, J or K model, with the stock headlights in, cut the fairing down at the sides. There was some sort of horrible old GSX1100 in Streetfighters once with that setup, only no headlights, sounds ridiculous but it was ace...

Magnum

Ill check out the Buell from Zunkus. Im not fussed about it being that unique, it will still be different from 99% of SV's on the road.
How hard is it to get hold of Buell headlights?

06-04-09, 10:41 PM
Yeah that was the guy , looked like a nice job as well and suited the bike too :) . eBay is your friend here for bits like that ;)

Here it is. Im not too keen on the orange screen, but its a nice interesting shape. I dont know how it would work on a naked, im not familiar with what the original buell looks like.
Edit - also i will be getting a pointy...

that does look mint but thats because its got usd forks, single sing arm, mat paint etc etc the headlights just set it off not make it.

Best bet is OEMs from something. A lot of the aftermarket headlight units are naff and just meant for looks.

A 'busa or 05 ish GSXR light unit would be nice, you can often find them cheap with broken lugs.

FYI putting better bulbs in the Dominator will crazy the plastic lenses.

Cheers Mark.

Mine were fine with 55w H4s in. I don't see why nightbreakers etc. of similar wattage would cause damage since the better bulbs seem to put out less heat than the cheaper ones and also have better UV shielding.

They were still $hite though...

and just to clear up everything.

Mounting plates... bit of ally and a nice bit of polishing.
inbuilt indies are just bulbs, clear lenses orange bulbs.
light - came with 25w duel filliment (awful things kept blowing aswell )
fitted 55w philips blue ones, bit of soldering to fit new connectors required, forgoten the name, all i needed was a washer to hold the bulb central ( drilled it out to fit the bulb ) and so the standard fitting that holds the bulb in place still works and they dont touch the plactic and melt it thankfully.
one last thing.... h3's only for this as they fit right on the focus point h1s were to long.
