Back around October I got my '98 Ninja with a view to using it as my long distance, wet weather and two up machine.

I bought my lovely Girlfriend some gear and today I took her out for her first ride on it. Apart from a mini tour on a Harley the only other pillioning she's done was a quick ride on my banger transalp.

She liked it! Not only did she like it but when she went to bed a bit earlier she said "I really enjoyed today, going out with you on the bike." I was so happy I even cracked a tiny little smile.

It was only a little ride through some traffic, down a small stretch of motorway and a few miles of country lanes but I reckon I might actually be able to get her join me in my hobby from time to time.

We bumped into a couple of orgers at the Ace too which was nice.

Lovely.

It's oddly enjoyable, you'd think the slight restriction on speed/cornering would **** you off but it doesn't at all. Can't do anything suicidal though.

Im looking forward to taking pillion. I took my brother on the back round the garden at about 3mph haha. He probably weighs about 5 stone though...

That's alright just never take a heffer!
I once took my 13 stone (male) mate on the back and it was awful, didn't help he fought the bikes movement too. Stopped after two minutes and told him to ****ing walk lol Wasn't fond of the proximity either :|
Only ever took one other lad and luckily he was a smallen.

Yeah it is good with girls on the back. Just no suicide, wheelies or endos or you get a smack.

I don't. And tbh I'm not gonna ride anyfaster than I want to just to please someone else. No chance I'm risking someone else's life just for a laugh.

Nothing like having your leather clad ladies thighs clamped around you.

I'm not a huge fan of anything suicidal though let alone taking someone else along for the ride. :smt027

In more ways than one. Bikes are an awesome pulling tool ;)

I once gave a ride to a 16st security guard at one of my old jobs. Bike was trying to wheelie just accelerating normally. Serves me right for only being 10st at the time :(

I gave my first pillion ride on saturday (and again on sunday), was great fun, only problem was its not very easy to comunicate at speeds above 30mph (due to noise). I was quite surprised at how easy it was, I thought the bike would be much harder to handle.

For anyone wanting to give their first pillion ride then my small peace of advice is to do it whilst they have a fairly low tank to petrol, that way the step up in weight is not as large.

I've had my 6"3' Dad on the back and was surprised at how well me and the SV coped actually.

Had my mate from work on the other day and he's tiny and didn't make much difference.

:D
when i first got back into biking a couple of years ago (SV650S) my Mrs would not come near the bike.
She has had 2 deaths in the family due to biking accidents.
After a couple of weeks she came on the back and i have not been able to get her off since (no laughing!).
I dont fing handling adversely affected on the SV1K at all.
Takes me all my time to get out solo now days! I have to sneak off to "put some fuel in".;)

I too was shocked that the Mrs enjoyed being pillion first time and still does. I did have to endure buying a load of PINK bike gear at the NEC last year to make her try it though... "is this really for your wife sir?" etc etc.

Had to take the old man pillion the other day as well after the fool ran out of petrol in the middle of nowhere.

I'm worried about taking my first pillion... do I have to find someone lighter than me... I'm 9 1/2 stone... and it just worries me! It's not something I need to worry about right now as I have a seat cowl and no seat, but you know, might be nice in the future.

My advice to you is start with a (feminine ) girl. First pillion I had was a 6'2 13 stone bear and I had to tell him to get off after a mile as his balance was shocking. I haven't a clue how much the lasses I've taken on weigh (and I'm not going to guess as I like my face how it is) but they weren't noticeable at all really. bit wobbly slowspeed at first though. Might be worth adjusting tyre pressures?

missyburd
08-04-09, 08:22 PM
Might be worth adjusting tyre pressures?
And preload? :D

Anyway, lots of threads about on here to help with first-pillion-taking, just make sure they don't try leaning the opposite way to the bike and all will be fine!

Dave20046
08-04-09, 08:24 PM

non adjustable on my bike. I do need to shim them up though to adjust to my preference at somepoint....more pressing matters first though.

Unless I'm missing a joke somewhere lol?

No the joke (private obviously) was me making a sensible and almost technical post... :D

Pink leathers, they sound dreadful (no offence to the whoever's missus it was who wanted them), but can you imagine me trying to sneak those past YC? I wouldn't even get into the garage!

A little side question, hopefully not too much of a derail, but those of you who've taken heavier pillions, do you find they're always a problem or is it quite easy to handle the bike as long as the pillion in question is doing stuff properly?

I just told mine he was a fat horrible person and needed to walk home. Other pillions havent been too bad. 12 stone bloke on the back for about 5 miles wasn't too bad but he was reasonably short which I'm sure made it easier.

Nah wasn't put to offend, pink just really isn't my colour, or YC's for that matter (clashes with his chinfuzz) :D

Aaaanyway, please stop encouraging me to derail, I'm trying very hard here!

i dont mind pillions, although i very rarely take anyone on the back. my missus hates going on the back of my hayabusa as i really cant behave myself and because its so noisy. my neice loves going on the back (even at an indicated 170mph:scratch:). if its true, then are there any ladies want to come on my back of my pride and joy..............:rolleyes::rolleyes:

ha ha! it was actually a typically devious female plan of hers to NOT ever have to get on the back. Not in a million years did she think I'd buy the gear, let along let her wear them on the back. But I called her bluff so I win!

I never said pink leathers - you did! And hell no it's not head to toe. Just a pink textile jacket and lid - as subtle as you can be with pink! It ain't that bad really.

Don't get this wrong, but since you said yourself that you are a new rider I'd concentrate on getting on with the bike before you think about taking someone pillion. Once you a happy on how everything handles then someone may be lucky enough to get a pillion ride with you.

What's your bike? On any SV650 from K2 onwards you can adjust the preload front and back. However you can't adjust anything else.

If I wasn't tight I'd spend £30 on the k2+ caps but as I am and I'm actually 1/2 moron I've decided to shim them up .

You can however adjust the preload of your rear shock for two up riding. It will do wonders to the handling.

Yarp. She sure has. Scared her witless trying to keep up with mates on a gixxer thou, R6 and another curvey going hell for leather but quickly saw the error of my ways and toned it down.

Not sure for the sake of britain's other road users whether I should go to phase two and get her on her own bike...

Can't take pillions any more - can't get enough foot on the ground to let them scramble onto the back of the 600.

Though they were scrambling onto a bag ontop of the seat on the 600 - probably didn't help.
