Argh! I've been working with a dude that sez the above 2 phrases constantly, all day long, now I've started saying To Be Honest with almost every statement, just like he does, it's like some illness I've contracted... It's not even management speak, he's a pipe fitter FFS!!

Somebody shoot me and put me out of my phrase loop misery!!

To be honest, I think you're making a mountain out of a mole-hill.

At the end of the day, you shouldn't get so wound up by stuff like this.

HTH. :D

These are also two of my pet hates, at the end of the day you go to bed, and to be honest these phrases pi$$ me off :-)

At the end of the day why the hell people feel the need to chuck these phrases into sentances is a mystery to me, and to be honest it's totally unessecery :-D

To be honest.
Follow this as quickly as you can with: 'What! Were you lying before?'

At the end of the day.
This always gets the response: 'It gets dark?' in a questioning manner.

I find this strategy has at least reduced the frequency of these annoying sayings.

well, Basically, Its All About...

....being as annoying as possible wthout realising it. I was at a chemistry conferance the other day, and the guy making the closing remarks kept saying "eeerm" alot, and each time exactly the same tone and duration.

ARGH!!

'Basically' and 'hopefully' - arrrrgggghhhh

My pet hate legalism - I see it all the time - is when a document refers to (for example) 'a [Conveyance] of even date herewith' or even worse 'of date first hereinbefore written'. YUK YUK YUK. Why don't people simply say 'dated today's date'? Sorry that was a slight derail...

I occassionally say TBH too, but the majority of the time manage to keep it to situations where it makes sense: Ones where I would in some way be disadvantaged/look a bit daft, but in the interests of honesty come clean.

For example, "To be honest, the fit and finish of this Airblade DB screen I'm selling isn't that good. This is reflected in the price, but I thought it only fair to make people aware of it."
Or,
"To be perfectly honest a lot of that went over my head, but am I right in thinking that..."

...but us Taffs use two t's and 'butt' is a different word, analgous to "mate". If I understand my dealings with Weedgies, the way they use 'but' seems to mean, "know what I mean?"

I've noticed some even only seem to use it in instances of disagreement; often sentences that are not quite outright arguments. In this way it's almost as if they are suffixing, rather than prefixing the sentence with the objection, 'but'.

Me: So you don't back know why my car has broken down?
Weedgie: It's running fine now though, but.

Now...pause.... people starting every sentence or speech with "now" annoys the hell out of me. It's just a word to say instead of making the "errrrrrrrr" sound which is blatantly all they can hear in their own head and they need time to construct a sentence.

Funny how these things are so contagious though. Seems many people round here almost invariably replace "those" with "them".........."pass me one of them forks", "remember them 205gtis?". I stab myself in the eye with a biro if I ever do it, which helps me to associate it with pain.
