Did anyone see grand designs tonight? The guy put a real 916 on his wall in the living room. Looked brilliant! :p
We were watching it, but the phone rang just before that bit - so had to turn the goggle box down. Did he say why? Or was it just because he could?
Waste of a bike me thinks.

He said it was an iconic bike or something. And said he had another bike that he was going to put up as well but the wife said no

Good point well made, funds dicated it sat in the garage for a while though, still better in there than put on the wall though...
Damn, i missed it tonight. We usually see it too.
Come on guys, you'd all have a bike on the wall if you could get away with it. :p
Anyways, it's not dipped in formaldehyde. If he feels like going for a blast, just wheel it out the patio doors. :D

Has he got the rider hanging up on another wall somewhere?
he had to put it over the fire to keep it dry.It was the only way to make sure it goes

How long ago was it recorded ?
Many felt that such chav-like excessive consumption was a sign of problems to come. And how they DID come!
As previously said, such things belong on the road or circuit, not the wall.
So thats what you do with Pete to make sure he doesnt put Diesel in it again...

I like it !!
If I had the space & money I'd have a 916 as a coffee table - far more practical than trying to keep the bl**dy thing running !! :p
And the chap is correct - the 916 is an iconic motorcycle - even someone like me who loathes D*c*t* with a passion can't deny that.
Waste of a bike me thinks.
Totally agree....mind you it is a duke so it was probably broken and therefore non-moving anyways!

I never get these comments, its a waste blah blah blah.
Its a peice of metal, of which there are thousands in the world.
Whats to say he hasn't got another one for riding? He's using it as art so whats the issue?
I never get these comments, they are silly. He has paid for it, he'll do what he wants with it.
Its not like its an ouber rare model with only 10 made or something

True, just seems to me to be a complete waste. If it were my money it would be being ridden thats what it was made for that was its original purpose. Part of its beauty is its function, i.e. how it feels to ride and enjoy the feeling you get from riding.
But its not a waste.
OK so its not being ridden, but is a waste?????
He gets to see something visually that he likes every single day sitting on the wall. Its decor, its art...... So its not being ridden... Is it any different from a Millionaire with untold amounts of supercars that never get driven, but also get sat in a garage and hardly ever looked at?
Not a waste, his money his choice. As I say, its not like its rare or something  Not my choice, but if I had loads of cash, i'd damn well do it too in one of my motorsport themed rooms. (except i'd have real ones to ride in the garage too).

Hmm I'd rather have a go at doing a life size sketch or something crafty and stick that on the wall than that heavy thing! I'd be far too busy worrying about it falling down and smashing to bits.
Maybe he actually doesn't have much cash and as he can't afford to ride it he'd rather just look at it lol! Maybe it's got a completely knackered engine but holds much sentimental value and so he feels the need to display it in that way. Either way it's his choice, could be worse things on walls in living rooms, like stags' heads

Totally agree. The fella did say he had another anyway. Its a piece of art, the bike was mint, displaying it just means it will be preserved that way & he can appreciate it every day in the comfort of his living room :thumleft:

It was in perfect condition just hung there. If he aint going to use it and has all that money I can take it off his hands for free. Where were they building that house again with it sat right in front of the glass windows he paid £150,000 for?
lol
It looked like it had just come out of the factory crate, I imagine it's never been prep'd to be ridden, no coolant fuel or oil
I too thought it's a shame but as has been said its his money.

The beauty of an object is derived from its function. 'Form Follows Function', this has been the tenant of modern design. By hanging the Ducati on the wall, the Ducati ceases being a designed and functional marvel of engineering and becomes a purely decorative object. This is typical of the confused post-modern fad for decoration over function.

What a wonderful idea - any chance we could make it a one-off Olympic sport in 2012 ?
Just set him loose at the start of the games - and make all the entrants wait 3 hrs before beginning the hunt.

I'm with Daimo on this one.
When bike designers design a bike one, of the things they aim to do is make the bike visually appealing, so by being hung on the wall for people to see & appreciate it is serving one of its functions.
And what about bike museums, all those bikes (including modern ones) just sitting there not being ridden & I think the vast majority of people think that they're cool places.
My old man has a bike that my Grandad restored in his hall & it's my favourite thing about the house.

"When bike designers design a bike one, of the things they aim to do is make the bike visually appealing".
OK, the next thing to ask yourself is in what ways is the Ducati visually appealing? Make a list and we'll take it from there.
I cant see a problem, he's got loads of dosh, he could buy a host of 916's and have one on every wall in the house.
To be fair, a lot of bikes (sportsbikes in particular) could be considered a waste. There are hundreds of examples of 5-6 year old bikes with less than 3000 miles on the clock.

As I’m sure you’re aware, that question is very subjective. Different people find different things visually appealing, beauty is in the eye of the beerholder & all that. :D
I’m not particularly enamored by the looks of the 916, however I do like the look of the single sided swing arm & underseat exhausts.

Each to their own...
If he wants to hang a bike on his wall and look at it rather than ride it then fair enough. Although it is a waste of a bike, its not really much different to seeing all the bikes and cars and planes in a museum
Me? Id rather ride the bike and use it! :D

Design of the Ducati 916 was a balance between function and form: Lets take the two things Gazman mentions as an example:
The single-sided swingarm is beautiful, but designed to make wheel changes faster during races.
The underseat exhausts improve aerodynamic performance, and give very clean lines.
The beauty of both the single-sided swingarm and the underseat exhausts are therefore derived from how effectively they fulfill their purpose. Good design by its very nature is beautiful. The great Ducati designers like Fabio Taglioni and Massimo Tamburini were well aware of the interconnection between beauty and function. It’s this fundamental link between aesthetics and design that is particularly prevalent in Italian design. It's what makes Italian motorbikes synonymous to works of art and it’s a tradition that's been passed down to designers from the Renaissance.
Don't get me wrong. I'm not saying that an object has to be functional in order to be beautiful. Such a narrow point of view would not be taking into account the important contribution that art and/or decoration make to our psychological and aesthetic sensibilities. Take the word functional out of the equation and I agree with you that beauty does become subjective. However, and lets be clear about this, once a work of art or design is taken out of its context and placed within an altogether different, alien context to which it was originally intended, its very meaning and reason for being changes. Putting a Ducati on a wall is like caging a bird. True, you can still appreciate its beauty. But ohhh, give the bird its freedom and let it fly and sing and then tell me which is the sweeter!
yorkie_chris
10-04-09, 12:52 PM
Very poetic, but they're more form than function. If they'd have been paying attention they might not have spent so long on making the lines of the fairing flow to perfectly to the eye, and a little more on the electrical system.
You want one of these then:

I've also seen someone put a BMW bike of some sort in their apartment. I can't find the link, but it it was posted on the forum several years ago.

Went into a Hein Gericke today to purchase some of their cheap oil and saw this. It's a mint Foggy Rep with 56 miles on it. Having looked closely at it I have to say that mileage looks genuine.
