What was your first ever experience on a bike you thought you'd never get back alive on? ;)
For me, I went out for a test ride on a CBR600rr. I'd barely had the SV but they were having a competition at the local honda dealer for anyone who had a test ride, so I booked myself in.
I got out of town, opened it up a bit (naievly) in second gear and then I hit a bump, which made me accidentally crack the throttle fully open and ended up on the pillion seat hurtling in to the distance with the front wheel in the air at 130! I had the bike for an hour and used a whole tank of fuel
I could almost include my first DAS lesson too which was on a hornet, where the instructor ended up being really late for the next lesson so the instructor just told me to go for it. It hit 7000rpm and I suddenly knew what bikes were all about :smt026

So what your saying is, you rather ungracefully cracked the throttle open and wobbled a nervous wheelie(which in fact was 2“ off the deck, feet flailing all over the place.
Sounds like my first go on an SV :D
I took a Thundercat out for a ride from a dealer in Birmingham, just up a 40mph dual carrigeway but the bike had been sat in the showroom for months and what I hadn't noticed is the back tire was a little (very) flat.
I opened it up in second gear and the back end stepped out. Only riding I'd done before that was on the GS500 I did my DAS on and had no idea what to do.
Luckily I stayed upright and took the bike back to the dealer at 20mph and handed back the keys with a "I'll let you know".

I'm the king of the accidental nervous wheelie ;)
I knew bikes were quick, but that thing was just mental! Loved it 8)

The day i have my SV derestricted, I took it out and got to a nice quiet road. Into third gear, crack open the throttle
holy crap, this thing CAN rev all the way to the limiter!!!!

The SV loves revs! Mine would rev out in 6th
As I'm allowed to derail my own thread ;) You'll love this! http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=200329544525&ru=http%3A%2F%2Fmotors.shop.ebay.co.uk%3A80%2Fitem s%2F_W0QQ_dmptZUKQ5fMotorcycles%3F_nkw%3D200329544 525%26_sacat%3D422%26_trksid%3Dp3286.m270.l1313%26 _odkw%3Dzx9r%26_osacat%3D422%26_fvi%3D1&_rdc=1
The first time I rode my 600rr it was obviously completely different to the SV I had before it.
My first thoughts were that all this SS600 talk about them having no low down power was absolute bollox, it was easily quicker from the word go. For the first few miles I was riding it in the same revs as the SV changing up at 9krpm because that what I was used to.
Then I though hell I see what its like to therev all the way......:smt060booooom from 9krpm+ the pull was just rediculous, I was also wearing textiles and nearlly bloody fell off the bike.
For a while I really though I had made a massive mistake and wanted my sv back because quite frankly it scared the **** out of me and I thought I would never feel comfortable using all the power.
A year on and like the sv started to do.....it feels slow  the problem is you always get used to what you have, and in reality everytime I go on it I could seriously end up in prison, it the only thing stopping me getting a big bike lol
Can't say I've had a ride yet where I didn't think I'd make it back alive.
I do remember my first ride on the SV though. I'd gotten over used to my CG125, which was basically turn a bend from a junction etc & whack the throttle open.
First ride on the SV, at the junction end of my road, turned, whacked. :D "My god this thing has some power. Remember to be careful with the right wrist!!" The front wheel came up, and it was quite a bit more than 2". :)

The cbr when derestricted was a little different.
'This feels the same' baarrrrrrrrrrrr 'let's see if we turn it a bit more its any different, say, past 8k, oh yes, whhheeeeeeeeeeeyyyy'
Scoobs encouraged me to find the upper ranges of my D650. And so I did. I can honestly say I'd never known acceleration like it:D But I've got something even faster now8-)
Getting it round corners at that speed is the next challenge...

Straight from my Fizzy to a RD350LC. frightening.
I was 16 at the time, my dad had just got back into biking and brought a GS500, we went everywhere on it and had some great times, one time on the way back from a ride my dad pulls up onto an old unused slip road and got off gave me the keys :o, i was so nervous but i got on and after a few goes I cranked the throttle open and roared away. I couldn't believe it's speed the little 500 was screaming like a biatch it was great :D. The only thing i had to compare it too was my 50cc motorbike, the GS felt like a monster.
Ofcourse I then went on to get my full licence, my SV650 and then the GSXR600.. Now i thought the SV was a stonking bike the torque is one thing i still miss, it was so forgiving, it kept me sunny side up and it taught me how to ride.
Buuuutt the GSXR, well thats in a different league. When I first rode it i was a little disapointed, but then i'd never ridden an in-line 4 before so didn't know how to get the most out of the engine.
One fine sunny day heading to Minehead the road was clear and i'd just purchased my new slip-on, i wanted to hear it scream so i dropped it into second out of one of my favourite corners and cranked the throttle back, Whhoooaa there,,, the back end powerslided and then off i went all the way to the redline .. It was the first proper time i've been scared on a bike but it was fantastic. Now everytime i ride i rarely get out of 3rd gear on the twisties, still so much to learn but loving every moment!!! :D

Don't know what restricted is like but wouldn't say the full power was dull. the only time I sometimes feel like its underpowered is on very fast roads. Took me a while to start to rev it more but you certainly get more out of it. To be honest I still don't think i rev it enough:rolleyes:
Having said that i do want just that bit more power say 90bhp or so although as someone else said i think you just get used to what you got!

I had a fifty then got the 250 il4 and that was/is unbelievably quick when you compare it to the 50, still feels quick enough if you get it to 15k rmp and drop the clutch. Only other thing i've had a go on was a restricted 600 hornet and that's no quicker than the 250 because of the restriction though it i a throttle restriction. No quicker 0-60 and out for a ride he struggled to keep up because the top speed ended up being a good 20mph lower than my 250. I am trying to persuade my dad to let me have a go on his ZX7R before he sells it though...
I remember pottering around the first day I had my SV, saying "be careful, take your time", and then on the way home I left it in 2nd out of a 30 limit and cracked open the throttle - braaaap - rev limiter, and cue the hysterically giggled swear words. The urgency of response and sense of speed you get when you're not used to it is amazing, it's just a shame that it fades. :)
I know the SV isn't a "fast bike", I've ridden a few more potent bikes myself, but at low speeds the engine is just great I think, and it's undeniably eager to misbehave.

it was quite a bit more than 2". :)
That's not what she said mate :p;)
Quickest bike I've ridden is my SV, albeit restricted. The only road bike I had before that was a geared 50cc race rep thing, which would just about touch 60 going along a downhill stretch of the A3  Was a right PITA whenever there was a slight hill though.. had to knock it down a couple of gears to keep the speed up.
I borrowed a mate's 125 for my test (cbr125 chinese replica) and then went straight to the SV. At first I thought "My God this thing's quick". The initial shock soon wore off, but I still love it. :)
first ride after passing my DAS on the sv thou. took it easy away from the house of the guy that i'd bought the bike from, all residential area. about 2 miles down the road onto the dual carriage way. "i know lets just dump the throttle and see what happens", think i was in 2nd, oooooooo my god!!!! all the way up to the line then third and onwards.
The next round about which was like a mile away was reached in very little time, with me partly sh!tt!ng it but still with a massive grin on my face.

Once. YC was taking me home along the tops, that road was bumpy to fook. I can't remember how but we hit a bump at some speed and I think I was still getting into the whole "how to bump back onto the seat smoothly" and I landed slightly skew with my bum almost hanging off the seat (s'ok, you can laugh :-D) I JUST managed to right myself before we went straight into another bump - don't think Chris had even noticed! I was grinning once I'd got back into my normal position but my heart was in my mouth for a second I tell ya!

Its pretty mad when you go upto a much more powerful bike! :) When I first had a go on the Ape I was in 3rd at about 50mph and wound it on and I was shocked and amazed at how it launched its self forward. Completely different to the SV, the Ape's bottom end felt like the SV's top end!
Unfortunately you do get used to it a little, though full throttle (which ive noticed I dont use often, no need lol) can still be scary!

[quote=gettin2dizzy;1859272]What was your first ever experience on a bike you thought you'd never get back alive on? ;)
Not quite what you were asking for.....but, years ago when I had a GS500E, my first time out on it and the exhaust was slightly blown. Fantastic, I was laughing hysterically for miles.
Not had anything bigger than the SV, but I had it up to 128 in Denmark.....and then you start thinking "If something jumps out on me, how am I going to get this baby stopped?!".
Scariest for me, though, is when I had my GP100 many, many years ago. 84 miles per hour down the stretch of road near Moy (used on the Police, Camera, Action programme - an area for catching people speeding! Oops!) on basically tyres not much bigger than a push-bike! Yee ha!
fortunately I've never really sh!t meself on a bike- occasionally the gixer surprises me with how hard it can pull butive never really been a 'crack open the throttle' kind of guy. The first time I went on a group ride was with binky and DMC last year and at that point I realised I'd been riding slow and well within my limits up to that point, ivecome out of my shell a bit since :)
Bikes are fast when you want them to be :)
First FAST bike ride 70 mph on my CBT on the Top Gear test track :DWhat was your first ever experience on a bike you thought you'd never get back alive on? ;)
Shhh, don't tell him, but last weekend when I test rode Devil Biccy's SV Thou ;)

Ive been scared by many bikes. I remember spinning up the rear in the rain on my CBR6 3 days after passing my DAS and having only ever ridden an RS125 before that.
As for not getting home, the only time Ive thought that was when I brought a mates 1998 R1 home from the garage for him while he was at work. It was the biggest bike I'd ever ridden but the speed didnt scare me, it was the brand new tyres, the wet road and the fact it was the slackest piece of **** Yamaha ever.
The 636 surprised me but didnt scare me, was shocking how far the super 6's had come, given that I'd rode there on my very uninspiring SV650 it was a pleasant change, I put a deposit down on it 2 days later.
Current bike would have made me **** myself a few years ago but its so sedate most of the time I love it!

Jumped off my RS125 (unrestricted) and onto a full power Z750.. opened the throttle in 3rd and the next thing I knew, I was doing over 100mph and it was still pulling like a bitch. Was genuinely scared.

Nono.. I couldn't (at the time) afford the restrictor kit for the Z as I had just passed my full licence and chopped my RS in for the Z... I'm a sensible (read boring) rider most of the time and wanted to have a giggle/kill myself. Funnily enough, the shop still has my beloved RS.. I may win the lottery and buy it back! xD

Vin Diesel in disguise. :)
(Sorry Jamie, couldn't help it...)
Not exactly "big" or "fast" on my 17th birthday got on my CBR125 straight off my twist and fart gilera DNA 50 less than 5 mins of riding must of treated the clutch like a rear brake loads of throttle dump clutch on the back wheel slid onto pillion seat feet on ground wheelie across 2 lanes on a dual carriage way heading towards a curb with a barrier in the middle, Dad watching in disbelief as he was just about to park his bike and pick me up of the ground, i really thought i was gunna land flat on my back and spend loads more money on my bike that i just replaced loads of panels on some how i manged to land it on front wheel avoid curb sit back on riders seat and continue riding =\

When I got the 500, didn't know it had been ported. "This doesn't feel any quicker than the 250 #motor comes up onto the pipe# SH1IIIIITTT" Big wheelie up the road clinging on for grim death frantically prodding at the rear brake (with pedal an inch longer than the 250 just to be annoying). Mad, mad bike. Would be an absolute hoot on the road, though I did swap it for another 250 shortly after it punted me through a fence...
Edit: first fast bike I tried on the road was an early R6. First thoughts were "the front wheels still on the floor .... this things f##kin boring compared to a crosser" ... then I looked down at the speedo to see about 130 up and decided that no, supersports bikes are actually quite interesting.

SV is my first bike. Only other bikes I've ridden are the BMW F650CS on my DAS (Yammy SR125 on my CBT- awful. Clutch was either on. Or off.), my Bro's CBR400- got a full system on it and race tuned as far as it'll go. Actually much quicker than my SV. Lots of fun.
And a VFR800 VTEC. I got up to 125mph on that thing VERY quickly (on a private road, ociffer!). But never felt unsafe- it's such a stable bike.
No doubt I'll get myself something daft-quick at some point and scare myself silly. But then I'm much too sensible for that sort of thing really!
My first SV was restricted and i got bored of that very soon so i did doubt getting another one..... any ways just run the thing in and woah! the pull is sooo much more, but the ability to wheely just by rolling on the power and the twitch coming off a bend if you get the power on a lil to early makes things interesting again.....FOR NOW
33bhp club dont know what ur missing! Some will argue there is no difference till 80mph but thats not right as i never lifted the wheel once on my first one and never got caught out like i did the other day when i felt like i was being left behind the bike whilst being over keen at a set of lights. (However i must add respect the law and keep ur licence untill the restriction is up).

I have had many moments on bikes, like a few serious tank slappers on my TL, one where I lost rear tracktion, in the cold, the rear tire went sideways, I was up in the air looking down at the bike, and somehow I landed in the seat, though while I was looking down, the bike was sideways with both wheels off the ground, as if it was laying on the floor, but it saved itself somehow.
Another major Slapper on the TL was on a curved slip road leading onto a big A road. A While cranked over a friend overtook me on the outside, I was not having any of that so I went from constant throttle to giviving it some gas as I was appoaching the exit..though, I did not see a big dip in the road, and the TL wheelied while I had some good lean, then the bars snatched themselves from my hands. Somehow again the bike sorted itself out. That was my first ever tank slapper on my TL, prior to that I wondered what all of the fuss was about.
As for other bikes, well I went from a 125, and had a go of an 99 R1, which was the first big bike I had ever ridden. I mangaged to find a stretch of road, and nailed it in 2nd to the redline, that was awsome, but I would never call it scary. A few years after, my TL was off the road, a friend needed me to move is ZX12R which at the time he was selling. He also had a Turbo K4 GSXR1000 and the 12R was no longer fast enough for him! lol We was on the M11, at about 6am sunday morning. I had not ridden for a while and was just taking it easy. There was nothing on the road at the time, and my friend decided to blast off on the turbo, I just took the bait, kicked it down a few gears and redlined the 12R....Wow it was fast, but so smooth and stable, not scary in the slightest.

Another one was riding a friends Blackbird after it had just had a serviced from a main Honda dealer. We swapped bikes for a couple of hours. After having some fun on some country roads, we found ourselves on a big motorway by mistake. It was clear and like a Wally I went for a top speed run. While almost in the red in top, for a little while, I saw some cars up in the distance and decided to call it a day....Right after we came to an exit and pulled off in search of more twisty roads, I was now taking it easy and came to a small roundabout just at the end of the exit slip road, and while gently going around the back tyre went sideways in a really bad way. I quickly pulled over to see what was up, only to see engine oil all over the fairings and rear wheel/tire. The newly fitted head gasket from Chiswick Honda decided to fail. Thinking back I was so lucky that the tyre did not step our while I was doing silly speeds only 2mins earlier!
I am only 27 and have had more moments on bikes in my 9 years of riding then most will have in a lifetime. I ride more sensibly now and not as often.

I had a 12bhp KDX125 and kept nagging a mate (18yr old on a rider policy) for a go on his GS750 with a GS1000 lump even though it was not finished. (No front brakes, rear drum only.)
So he relented, so i jumped on this bikini faired, drag-barred , Alfa or Marshall piped bad boy and took it for a burble through town out onto the moors onto the A77. Felt like i was lying flat out on the bike with the rearsets and straight bars.
Up to 90 and it did not feel right, not like 90mph (like I would know what that felt like anyway, only having a 68mph 12bhp ****ter) so thought the speedo was reading wrong. Dropped into 4th (gear indicator, wow!) and and got the throttle open............110 in an instant and my visor was on my neb. Unbelievable wind force.
Ton-up, job done. Rode back to find my mate and his brother having kittens cos I had been away half-an-hour. Doobies all-round.
Getting your 1st ton used to be special, don't think this is the case anymore as you get a license a lot easier and can jump on anything.
Happy days.

Nah, just because we're not all starting out on h*nda benleys and other 'orrible 'acks. Getting the ton up on a modern bike is a piece of pi$$. Try do it on an X7 or something like that and it took some brains to port it properly as well as the stupidity to ignore the frame bending under you...

My first FAST bike ride was picking up the SV from the dealer, brand new!! The week before I part-ex'd the CBR125 and waited a very long week. I had my sister-in-law, nephew, the dealer mechanic and the salesman all watching me. I trickled out onto the clear main road, adjusted myself ready to go and it was nearly a brown trouser moment! I still get them moments now mainly on the way back from a ride, usually getting tired!

First time I took out a litre inline 4... (05 R1, what a beauty) Pretty much exactly the results you'd expect, going from stationary to too fast, too fast :D But luckily it was also very good at slowing down, and very good at going round corners too fast. Ridiculous devices...
When I was younger I had a go on a YZ250 Moto-X bike - that was very scary when the only comparison I had was an MT5!
Road bike wise I had a go on a Thunderace two months after passing my test - had only ridden the SV up to this point and I genuinely wasn't ready for the huge speed - rode it again a year later and enjoyed it much more as I didnt find it as intimidating.
The 'Bird has some gonads but not in a scary way - just in a "I hope there aren't any police or cameras about" way

was after 4mths of riding, sv is my 1st bike. my bro in law stopped at the side of the road got of his zx9r and gave me the keys. he said he wanted some fun on mine and left lol.
got on it and ok, riding very careful for a few miles getting the feel. then hammered it. caught up with my bike, with the biggest grin on my face. my next bike will be a 636 tho.
the scare bit was braking when coming up fast behind a car, brakes when on and nowt happened, pull harded then they did, and my **** stopped twitching. thought his bike was a gonna. they take a bit of getting use too.

A few weeks prior to AR09, riding out with some of the soho boys and girls.
flip, it was fast, I was very aware I was riding quite close to my limits and was ordering myself to just throw the bike into the corner and not even put my fingers near the brakes

first day of DAS - er500. crack the throttle - bugger thats quick. "bump" - out of the seat. clench sphincter. then locking the rear wheel having to do an emergenc stop at some lights changing.
week later passed test - bought a hornet. instructor is talking me over the bike. "dont whack it out in first OK?", yeah no worries. went and found nice little piece of dual carriageway... 1st gear. WACK. it appears i am sitting on the pillion seat.. mummy!
13yrs old 150+ ... blah blah...really cool my dad:D
Don't take this the wrong way, but that sounds bloody irresponsible to me.

July of last year.. Up until then the most powerful thing I had ridden was my Mum's restricted Diversion and my work bike at the time was the Yamaha YZF-R125.
Went to the Ron Haslam School on the CBR600s did a few laps getting used to first time on track and bike and what have you and realised I was only revving it to about 9k or so, but to me it felt and sounded like I was revving the knackers off the thing. So next lap I just thought lets see what this thing can do.
Bloody hell... I wasn't prepared for the blistering acceleration and hit the rev limiter almost instantly.
The speed I could handle - it didn't bother me.
The one thing that really caught me out was how immense the brakes were. Immense.
150mph on the pillion seat of a turbocharged Triumph Rocket II down tight country lanes was an experience as well... as was going pillion with Potski on the new V-max and the thing spinning the rear tyre with us both on at 70mph.

At the moment, it's got to be my last time on track, it's not fast in terms of ultimate speed (top speed was 125-130 or so) but when you are coming up to corners that quickly, braking hard, and then throwing it over to get round the corner, it feels damn fast!

My first fast bike moment is a little different.
I had an Honda NSR 125 and loved the 2 stroke action but got knocked off it after 2 months. (Just getting used to keeping it in the power)
I did my DAS and bought an £800 Suzuki Bandit 600.
Whilst waiting for some cash to pay for insurance I cleaned it up as it was a bit tatty.
Put some new plugs in but made the mistake of taking all the HT leads off at the sametime and me being young put then all back on wrong.
So first time out on it, it was running on 2 1/2 cylinders and backfiring all the time. I was almost booing because it was slower than my NSR and just boring.
I took it home and told my dad what I had done and he said straight away did you put the leads on the wrong way around?
5mins later I'm kitted up going down the road and open it up properly expecting the same amount of power.
That was one of the best biking days I had!!!
After reading all the posts I think I'm going to change my big heavy CB750 to a Hornet 600 as I always liked my Bandit 600 but wanted something faster and better looking

I'm not sure about fast, but my first really dodgy bit of riding was in Chiang Mai, northern Thailand.
I had zero biking experience and hired a Honda moped. After visiting one of the temples we had to pull out into four lanes of fast moving traffic. So when a gap came along I grabbed the throttle and let the brake off.
I didn't realise that with a pillion on the back even a 100cc moped will wheelie, so we shot out into this traffic on one wheel with absolutely no control whatsoever. After a few seconds of complete panic the front wheel hit the road and we wobbled off down the road.
Probably the closest I've been to meeting my maker so far.
I have had a few ride-outs where I thought omg I am going to come off but each time I have managed to composemyself and place all my trust in my SV650S which I must say has never let me down, I have had my license now for nearly a year and a half and can't think of any other bike i would rather be on, although I need to get the handlebar height sorted as my wrists are starting to pack in. Still being a new rider the SV has more than enough power for me although there are occassions where my fellow riders with R1's leave me for dust
