View Full Version : GM II route to consider...
messed around with google maps and came up with this
http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=Unknown+road&daddr=Kinlochmore+to:North+Ballachulish,+Onich,+Fo rt+William,+United+Kingdom+to:Connel+to:Inveraray+ to:Tarbet+to:Crianlarich+to:Crieff+to:Aberfeldy+to :Inverherive&hl=en&geocode=FYz5XAMdLrm4_w%3B%3BFZwYYQMdnfGw_w%3B%3B%3 B%3B%3B%3B%3B&mra=ls&sll=56.553428,-3.886414&sspn=1.153544,3.570557&ie=UTF8&z=10
thought that the 2 loops would give people who got tired a chance to head back to base, while the rest of the group could continue on and do the other loop.

looks good mate, looking back at last years routes and post massacre comments here is a mix of your map, last years and incorporating some of the requests. We can have a play with these and discuss at the meeting.
Option (http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=Unknown+road&daddr=Kinlochmore+to:North+Ballachulish,+Onich,+Fo rt+William,+United+Kingdom+to:56.4177,-5.475311+to:Inveraray+to:Unknown+road+to:A821+to:A 85+to:Crieff+to:Aberfeldy+to:Inverherive&geocode=FYz5XAMdLrm4_w%3B%3BFZwYYQMdnfGw_w%3B%3B%3 BFUykVwMdNC63_w%3BFRbYWQMdeNq8_w%3BFYR2XAMdMrm__w% 3B%3B%3B&hl=en&mra=dme&mrcr=2,3&mrsp=3&sz=10&via=6,7&sll=56.412382,-5.263824&sspn=0.351748,0.854187&ie=UTF8&ll=56.369814,-4.65271&spn=0.760577,2.801514&z=9)
This Incorporates, the Kinlochleven loop, the wibbly wobbly, Military road, dukes pass and Oban, which was requested last year. bit longer I know and by the time you include stops etc probably 10 riding. Allows for folks to miss the ww, dukes and loop if they want (some folk dont like one or more of them) also the option to bin the crieff / aberfeldy loop and go direct from lochearnhead to Killin if we are running short of time / getting tired.:reaper:
Watch this space though as Northy will probably have it routed with regroup points and timings already.

I'm a bit worried about length... We ended up chopping a big chunk off the ride last year, though luckily it was the worst bit ;) But we were still late back to the site. Largely because of all the chaos on the day of course... But my instinct last year was to have a big route and make it a big day, and I think I was wrong. Or at least, bit off too much.
The left hand loop is absolutely class I think... For me, it's the basis of the ride, it just works so well, no mile munching, just miles of good and great road. And some great touristing too. But it's not easy to add bits to it, because once you go north or east, making a loop gets harder.
Here is 185 miles and about 4 hours of solid riding, by my estimate. Plus lunch and stops. It throws in the wibbly wobbly road but still doesn't hit the duke's, which I'd like to personally but it's a diversion. It's a sort of sadder option since it's that much more limited but if we assume a 10am start, hour for lunch, 2 30 minute breaks (including fannying around time), and that's a 4pm finish even barring disasters. It's a much more manageable distance for numbers but still gets in most of the highlights.

Just another option of course, actually I reckon the thing to do here is throw in all the options, all mapped out with distances, so we can have a big fight over them when we meet up to finalise it ;)

I'd really like to head north of the fort btw, but that's big country, we'd have to Drumgask and then south down the A9 and it's still like 8 hours. Madness tbh. But I love that A86, there was a couple of times when we did it after the aviemore bash where it felt like one big riding hallucination

Yes. Northwind is right. We must settle this in the traditional manner, stripped naked to the waist and each carrying an A3 road atlas. :smt062

yeah, i'm always a bit optimistic with my routes, expecting everyone to have as much of an iron butt as me. felt my route was a bit hopeful, hence why i suggested chopping bits off as rewuired, but we can always do the east loop on the sunday.
What is the oban to lochguilphead road like??, makes it a bit meatier (http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=Kinlochmore&daddr=North+Ballachulish,+Onich,+Fort+William,+Uni ted+Kingdom+to:Connel+to:56.166965,-5.482178+to:Inveraray+to:A814+to:Glen+Fruin+Rd+to: Crianlarich+to:A82+to:A82&hl=en&geocode=%3B%3B%3B%3B%3BFTCnVwMdIn22_w%3BFVViVwMdyx G5_w%3B%3B%3BFZjvYAMdrg-x_w&mra=dpe&mrcr=2&mrsp=3&sz=9&via=3&sll=56.360686,-4.99054&sspn=0.748587,2.139587&ie=UTF8&z=9)
or alternatively this (http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=Kinlochmore&daddr=North+Ballachulish,+Onich,+Fort+William,+Uni ted+Kingdom+to:Connel+to:Inveraray+to:55.986092,-4.899902+to:A814+to:Glen+Fruin+Rd+to:Crianlarich+t o:A82+to:A82&geocode=%3B%3B%3B%3B%3BFTCnVwMdIn22_w%3BFXhkVwMdQh m5_w%3B%3B%3BFZjvYAMdrg-x_w&hl=en&mra=dme&mrcr=3&mrsp=4&sz=10&via=4&sll=56.092725,-5.034485&sspn=0.376918,1.069794&ie=UTF8&z=10)
or even a wee ferry trip (http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=Kinlochmore&daddr=North+Ballachulish,+Onich,+Fort+William,+Uni ted+Kingdom+to:Connel+to:Inveraray+to:A815+to:A770 %2FEldon+St+to:A814+to:56.196773,-4.747467+to:Crianlarich+to:A82+to:A82&geocode=%3B%3B%3B%3BFXU3VwMdXfWz_w%3BFSblVQMdjAi3_ w%3BFTCnVwMdIn22_w%3B%3B%3B%3BFZjvYAMdrg-x_w&hl=en&mra=dme&mrcr=4,5&mrsp=7&sz=10&via=4,5&sll=56.092725,-5.034485&sspn=0.376918,1.069794&ie=UTF8&z=10)
Sorry just getting carried awy now:smt017
Or we can always go a wee bit north, and do a ferry but take in the commando (http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=Kinlochmore&daddr=A82+to:56.791854,-5.185547+to:A85%2FDunollie+Rd+to:A814+to:Glen+Frui n+Rd+to:Crianlarich+to:A82+to:B863&geocode=%3BFeIuZAMdLpa0_w%3B%3BFd7kXAMdHHms_w%3BFT CnVwMdIn22_w%3BFXhkVwMdQhm5_w%3B%3B%3BFaZZYQMdjBC0 _w&hl=en&mra=dme&mrcr=1,2&mrsp=2&sz=9&sll=56.826436,-5.30365&sspn=0.767957,2.460938&ie=UTF8&z=9) monument

Weeeeelll, for some people 7 hours is too long, it gets a bit tiring after a while and sometimes you get a bit sore.

i vote for northys route. reason being that some attendees will have ridden 400+ miles the day before to get there so will be a bit tired..
this also gives folk the choice of going for a 'mini' run after T.
its all very well for us 'natives' doing huge mileage. we dont have a large return journey home at the end of GM II.
My 2d worth
Do the route you've already planned without looking at another possible, the reasonings are
You know it and so do more than a few others
You know how long it will take (give or take the odd diesel mishap etc)
You know where to sort out for food and other stops
You know the range of the bikes and fuel stops
Thinking about another route will involve someone going out, timing it, work out stops, arrange a main food stop, more stress than you need ;)
You know how long it will take (give or take the odd diesel mishap etc)
*Has a vision of the future. First fuel stop on GMII, Pete picks up the fuel hose, and a chorus of voices shout 'UNLEADED'*

...and then someone else diesels their bike instead, and I have to kill them. oh, and anyone needing jump starts this year will have their bike set on fire.
