View Full Version : Raising Money For Charity
A few years back Pete and I organised a 'Mystery Ride' for a bike group we rode with, and combined with a raffle we raised £450 which was split between the Air Ambulance and Macmillan.
When we were Dukedolph'd up and parked in Stratford last year so many people asked if we were collecting for charity. Should we do so this year do you think? Dukedolph reckons we should collect for the Air Ambulance, as they fly too;) It seems a bit weird, asking people for money at Christmas, but if they are willing to give, is there anything wrong with it?
How many of you have raised money for charity, and what did you do?
every rideout with the WRC we pay a £1.
plus we do a raffle at xmas time
this then gets donated to a kids charity at xmas, when we do the toy run, last year we raised about £600 but the weather was crap
this year we are hopingh for a grand

Parachute Jump
2 x 100+ mile bike rides
Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Snowdon in 24 hours
24 Peaks Challenge
Various collections at local carnival
probably other stuff that I can't remember.
What I will never do and don't agree with is the current trend of people basically getting a free holiday to Machu Pichu, Everest Base Camp, Killamanjaro etc buy raising a minimum amount for a charity. People who give to these sorts of events need to realise that part of the money they give goes to pay travel expenses, guides, porters etc. I'd sooner give my money direct to the charity.

Lissa, if you want to do it then you should. I'd rather put my hand in my pocket for something like the Air Ambulance than into some large charity organisation that can afford to advertise on TV to guilt me into donating money.
In 2007 I did a 55 mile cycle ride, raised £1800 for the Neo Natal Unit at Musgrove Park Hospital in Taunton.

Lissa, I think this is a great idea and I think people would willingly give, even at Christmas time, for a cause such as an Air Ambulance - who know's when we, or someone close to us, might need it!
Go for it!

A couple of months back we had a serious accident at work where a guy got his arm caught in machinery and had it almost ripped off. Without the air ambulance getting him to hospital quickly, he would have probably lost the arm. I think that everyone would agree that it's a worthy cause.
