Right so triied to crank the bike over and it did but didnt start :( which then drained the battery, so charged it up. Now when hiting the button all you hear is the relay click, on the bike the relay is wired directly to the positive battery terminal and then sits behind the batteryand tthe positive wiring seems to be getting very hot and the rubber casing has melted

Any ideas?

Thanks

Cable corroded perhaps, what do the terminal ends look like?

The terminals look clean, i also have a earth wire p***ing about in the wind with a terminal connector on it but no idea where it goes

Which positive wire is cooking? The one from battery > relay or the one from relay > starter?

My bad its a solenoid

It goes Positive battery terminal > solenoid > off some where else

The one going from positive to soleniod is cooking, but this morning with the battery left on the optimate over night putting the battery back on the bike cranked after a few hits of the button  then once it had been cranked lots the battery died again and again and the soleniod was clicking and the wire felt a little soft and it wasnt really that hot, so i may have found the answer to my own question perhaps once the battery is flat thats when it cooks

Less voltage may mean it is drawing more current.

You shouldn't really crank them lots, bike starters are pretty light and fragile. I try to use 10 second bursts max with some time in between for everything to cool down.

Could well be

Trouble is the bike takes for ever to kick into life like 10 -20 seconds of cranking then once it does (going of subject sorry) it knocks like f**k and then dies when you let off the button. (off subject again sorry) it may need fresh petrol to run properly so then hopefully less cranking and less melting:cheers:

Well find out why! Something obviously isn't right.

Then again the knocking doesn't sound good either. If there's enough play in the big ends then you can risk the pistons going up too far and possibly meeting valves (depending on the clearance, I suspect there will be more space than this.)

petrol smells a bit iffy so that is first on the list and a bit of carb cleaner and redex methinks need to get it going to listen to the knocking so we can start stripping the flaming thing, my Dad seems to think it sounds more like a crank (i think i no he mentioned something along those lines this morn)

Has it gone bang then?

Yes as can be seen by my sig the com rod has made an apearance and put a hole in the engine casing :( which explains the very noisey banging and why it wont start for any longer than 5 - 20 seconds. Going to strip it down find out why see whats salvageable and then source another engine

You'll probably find you've just got yourself a set of 4 400cc ashtrays.

Have a check around, you MIGHT be able to get undersize main bearing shells and grind the crank (if its actually scored). But you'll still need some rods.

Chances are it will work out cheaper to get a new engine and sell on / keep for spares the gearbox clutch and ancilliaries.

Will find out how bad it is tonight might even find its dropped a piston and bolaxed the head :( if its all ok up top then ill see if i can source the bottom engine casing and work out if its cheaper to replace that or get a whole engine

I bet you 17p it'll be cheaper to find a new engine.

Never know, a thunderpussy might fit...

I know a chap who has a FZR 400 and he's going to be selling it shortly. Long story short someone stole parts off it and he doesn't have the time to source & fit the replacements.... so it's missing bits such as clocks, fairing and some others, but all the mechanical parts are there and in good condition. Send me a message if you're interested and I can give you his number
