Knowledge of C Diff?

Apart from the general info you get from Google etc, does anyone have any knowledge/experience of C Diff Infection?

My Grandad has been hospitalised with this. He is 81 and very weak. He has now also contracted a chest infection and the ward he is on has an outbreak of Norovirus....so no visiting.

Any suggestions? I need some hope as we have been told to prepare for the worst. :cry:

Its mostly passed around by really bad cleaning habits, i.e in hospitals where staff don't wash hands etc, passing on diarrhoea bug patient to patient. It can be life threatening. If the wards been shut because of norovirus...which is sickness and diarrhoea, then its not a good place to be,

C Diff, not nice. The wife used to complain about it all the time when she was on the wards.

Hospital acquired infections are preventable. they just need the gumption to get it under control. Occasional deep cleans are never enough. There was a time when hospitals smelled of disinfectant, now the cleaners sorry cleaner is only allowed soap and water.

When I was in some years ago, I refused to permit them to take my blood pressure as the machine had been used on all the patients How am I to know what they have. It then transpires most tourniquets used for taking blood are riddled etc.

I asked how they cleaned the ear phones for the inpatient TV. We don't was the staff answer. There is only one answer, individual rooms, en site bathrooms. of course it costs, but it saves lives

I'm really sorry to hear this Kate and I hope he'll be on the mend soon. I agree with all that Timwilky has said. I'm not that old, but when I went into Guys Hospital London for private treatment, the hygiene standards astounded me.....in a good way. I can't believe the NHS hospitals aren't MADE to keep their wards in the same state.

Regarding your Grandad, I am no nurse so cannot tell you anything other than I hope that he will come through this for all your sakes. My own grandad, although he passed away a few years back now contracted MRSA and later C Diff while in hospital, both heart operations. He made it through both times so it doesn't have to mean the worst.

As he can't have visitors, maybe you could all send him little care parcels each couple of days to lift his spirits. Cards of well wishes, little treats that you know he likes, books, family photos etc. It's mazing what a little gesture like this can do when you are seperated from your loved ones.
