Yesterday Mina had her first Championship show of the year (and first time she has been in an adult class now she is out of puppy) at Stafford County Showground (Nationals 2009), and qualified for Crufts!! She did so well and looked stunning! You are probably not interested but i am so pleased with her that i had to share it with all that have met her (a lot of you did when we went to AR last year).

YAY for Mina, YAY for you and YAY for Lucien!!!
That's fab news and lets hope that 2009 will bring you and the pups some really good times!
They are both looking beautiful and me and Stretch can't wait to meet Lucien, he's a stunner. I'll be bringing our lot to the AR again, so we can have more walks together and watch them all play!
You may well have just given me an excuse to go to my first ever crufts this year, so if you need any help....let me know chick!

DO IT! I went a couple of years ago as a birthday treat, absolutely amazing, I actually cried when I first walked in (sounds so daft I know but then I am a soft git sometimes ) but to see so many dogs all looking so lovely, well it was overwhelming. I absolutely loved every minute, did far too much shopping haha. Definitely recommend if you love dogs, its dog heaven and well worth the battle through the spaghetti junctions at Birmingham :-D

I went to a proper in the middle of nowhere rodeo in Cody, Wyoming a few years back and they had rounded up over 100 wild Mustangs. They rounded them into the rodeo arena at the end of the day (we had to wait a bit as they had been herded in from 260 miles away) and they all came galloping in. I cried then. To see so many wild horses was incredible. Then.......they announced that they had only been brought in as the rodeo was on that night, they were actually just being moved and so they asked us all to stand and watch as they then set them free into the surrounding wilderness. It was amazing. They crept out of the gates to start with, then it turned into a stampede as they all went off into the hills. Amazing and cried even more. One of those things I have always wanted to see and I did.
I hope I can get to crufts.....sorry for the derail!
Thanks Everyone!
Well i can't actually make it to the AR this year as Mina and Lucien are entered into a show on the Sunday, however i will bring them over on the Saturday to have a play before they get groomed for the show :) Its not too far from us so should be a nice day out :)

Well good luck and let us know how he gets on. If you know the area, can you think of anywhere that would be a good place to take the dogs on the Saturday. It would be great if we could find somewhere that would be a good place to spend a decent few hours relaxing, playing with the dogs and having a picnic etc. Could be good for anyone with kids too.

Same as my lot. Been doing lots of socialising with Stig this last year and all I do now is have his muzzle on for the first five mins (not that he needs it) get the kids to throw a stick a few times and hey presto...he's all good. The others all love kids!
Sounds like we should be able to have a fun few hours!!!

Stunning looking dogs, well done on placing. only those that have done it realise how much time and effort is reauired, (some folk think children are hard work) We used to have and show samoyeds, but have been dogless for a few years now, friends still show (just switched from boxers to dobs) I love big dogs, mals, akitas, siberian huskies etc, think they are pride personified and have an amazing gait.
I'm in the process of dog proofing the garden as we may~~ be looking at getting something later this year after our wedding. We will not be showing again though, so may go down the rescue route rather than puppy.
Well done again.

Thanks :)
It took us over 2 hours to groom Mina on Friday, and it took 2 of us to do it too... one to distract her and one to bath and dry her! But seeing how well she performs with our handler Nikki and seeing the smile on her face when she does it it is well worth the time.
We may have a future champion, the judge said we need to thicken her coat up, and she will look amazing! Just got to do it all over again in 2 weeks time for Bath Championship Show!

We have to keep them outside as her coat is finer than it should be as they are house dogs. So we are building a run on the part of the garden that is always in shade so we can keep them out there and know they are safe :)
Central heating has made their coats too soft :) She is also on Yumega Oil which helps recondition and strengthen coat and when she loses her coat it will grow back quicker and thicker. Lucien is losing all his puppy coat at the moment too so he is also on the Yumega Oil.

Just goes to show (bdum tsch!) what a serious (and expensive) job showing dogs is! Really excited for you though Sam, I hope Mina goes far, I've no doubt she will looking as good as she does :D
Just one question though, I take it you still race Mina? Can you race and show the same dog? Obviously racing contributes to the exercising but I'm just wondering if there are restrictions on that sort of thing.

AWW bloody love sibes, dont have a big enough garden though so the misses wouldnt let me get one. Got a spollie instead (springer spanial/boarder collie) shes small but nuts so she makes do with the garden and we're able to let her off the lead so she can run about.
Do you let your husky off the lead? was it hard to train to come back when in large open spaces?

Obviously racing contributes to the exercising but I'm just wondering if there are restrictions on that sort of thing.Yep we still race Mina :) well not over the summer, but it helps give them muscle and tone and makes them look more impressive in the show ring, unlike other breeds such as Retreivers and labs, a good show dog should be able to do its job, If a malamute can't work then it is constructed wrong and shouldn't do well at showing :) We do the racing, Weight pull, and backpacking (as some people saw at Lydden) with Mina and lucien will do the same once he is a year :) although he will start training to pull once he is about 8 months.
Mina is a fantastic worker... just a couple of pictures:

Do you let your husky off the lead? was it hard to train to come back when in large open spaces?Siberian Huskies are less reliable than Alaskan Malamutes (which is what i have) but still i don't let Mina off lead unless i know the area is enclosed, she has such a high prey drive, she would be off if she saw something, plus they are stubborn so if she doesn't want to come back there is no convincing her otherwise. She is also very big, she is 94lb so bigger than most dogs you get in the park, i don't want to take the risk of a small dog mouthing off to her (which is normally the case) and Mina finishing the argument ;) If she is on lead and another dog starts on her, i know my dog is in the right and it saves arguments. Lucien is still very young and in the "mummy might leave me stage" so tends to stick close to me on walks, plus being a typical boy he follows his stomach so never goes too far as he wont get back to me quick enough to get treats!
Just goes to show (bdum tsch!) what a serious (and expensive) job showing dogs is!
Yes it is. we travel over the country to do it... we have a show a week from now up until 15th August! Some weeks have 2 shows, from Leeds to Paignton! Also the cost of the grooming gear is expensive too, i have a table to groom them on, a blaster to dry them (which is very powerful) plus all the shampoos which Mina is going through like no tomorrow! i clean her then she goes and digs a bloody great hole in the garden! Then the travelling and travel lodge costs... £20 per dog to stay in travel lodges now! And then there is also the working side, Rig, Harnesses, Rope, more traveling, more travel lodges, at least in the winter there are hardly any shows so i don't have to groom them, just let them dry off and brush the mud out :) luckily they are pretty much self shedding when the coat is dry and the mud falls off them. We have had 3 new cars since having the dogs... sold the evo and got a cr-v when we brought Lupo home... then CR-V was too small for 2 dogs so we use that if we are taking one dog out or going into town, and bought an L200 which has big cages in the back for the dogs! The list is endless, but it is a lifestyle i will never give up... especially as my dogs have so much fun doing it too, they are stubborn enough that they would refuse to pull or enter the ring if they weren't happy :) the minute they don't want to do it is the day we will stop, but they are both very good.

yup the pup up the road is only tiny, but already shows hes a puller...lol.
The guy has started to build a nice big fence round the house, and he keeps him on a long line while hes building it, he was really pulling at it while Bob was stood with him. He'll be kept outside too as its not the first husky/malamute that hes had,
how do you thicken the coat up?
...add a little corn flour....;)
No?:D

Appolgies, I thought malmutes were much broader and taller than huskies and pics show the dogs head below waist height so I assumed they were the smaller husky.
For malmutes their bloody georgeous, I always considered the husky a smaller better looking malmute but yours is stunning. The mute just seems to have been a bit of a brute to me previously its awsome to see you sled them as well thats cool.
Forgot to say congratulations on the crufts part previously too :) Well done.

Mina compared to her... now let me work this out.... her Great Great Great Aunty BeBe (who is 13 in this picture) as you can see she has a lot of developing to do:
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3206/2877874389_946959e504.jpg
You can see she has a deeper chest than Mina and broader skull, her bloodline are very slow to mature physically and she will not be fully developed until she is about 4. Lucien will be the same as he has the same Dad, AM CH SnoKlassic Ticket To Ride... stunning boy:

Makes complete sense but I did wonder! Some show dogs are terribly pampered and restricted in doing the things they were bred for, its wonderful to know others are getting the opportunity to work!
The list is endless, but it is a lifestyle i will never give up... especially as my dogs have so much fun doing it too, they are stubborn enough that they would refuse to pull or enter the ring if they weren't happy :) the minute they don't want to do it is the day we will stop, but they are both very good.

Stunning dogs!
I would love one but the thought of not being able to walk in the woods with a dog off lead really puts me off. Really shame but hey thats how they are I guess.
One question, do you give them joint supplements? My Boxer uses a ruffwear back pac on her walks and I wonder if she should be having some sort of protection for her joints.
As your dogs do work, does this worry you in any way for the future?
Denise
Samnooshka
11-05-09, 07:39 PM
The only supplements she is on are DogVitality, with Omega 3, but she is a fussy eater so it helps her absorb as much as she can from her food when she does eventually eat. Here it is:
http://www.snowpawstore.net/supplements/supplements/dogvitality-with-omega-3-250ml.html
The dogvitality basically helps promote healthy joints too and we noticed an improvement in her stamina and racing performance. We have had her Hip and Elbow scored (x-rays done on her hips and elbows then sent off to be examined by the BVA) to see if her joints are healthy before she starts her working season seriously next season and they have come back very good :)
She is also on Yumega which is basically flax seed oil with vitamin E to help improve coat and skin (her skin is fine, but she needs a thicker coat).
Mina uses a Palisades Backpack from Ruffwear :D she is only carrying 4KG at the moment but she will eventually carry up to 13KG in her pack, we are using water and diving weights to weight her pack :) She will do 4 10 mile walks with 13KG in her back and she will get her working title :)
FooFighterDen

Wow, my dog is only carrying about 1.5 pints of water in hers. 13kg, Impreesive! that would be handy for picnics:D Just think of all the beer they could carry for you;)
I have a pot of synoquin (joint supplement) for her but she wont eat them in her food. Spits them out! Little so and so!
Thanks for the link and info
