Where have I been? How come I didn't know about these until yesterday? I had to ask the guy if he was testing it as a prototype or if he was a journalist... He looked at me like I'd just taken a crap in my hand and thrown it at the traffic warden!

It comes like this as standard apparently - ohlins shock, shaft driven single sided swing arm, brembo's:

Had a look on wikipedia to find out a bit more but there's nothing. What's the crack with these? The guy said "if you get on with v-twins then these are incredible" and "my mate binned his ninja trying to keep up with me, it just takes off as you come out of corners whereas the ninja has to carry more corner speed to stay in the powerband"....

"bmw lose money on every single one they sell because the company they were going to use for the carbon fibre, had only ever made carbon fibre items for race bikes - BMW weren't happy with the finish for their road bikes so they had to find someone else to make it for them... on average costing around a 1/3 more for each item"...

"they're going to stop making them when the new s1000rr (or whatever that magic new bmw sports bike is?) comes out, so they'll only have been making them for 2 years"

"when they went on sale, every single hp2 destined for the UK already had a deposit laid down - you couldn't get hold of them. They're still rare as hell but because of that they hold their value exceptionally well, I sold my first one for £500 more than I paid for it..."

The guy was very friendly and I thoroughly enjoyed talking to him, but I also appreciate that bullsh*t is a big part of sportsbikes..

So fellow org'ers, please give me a reason* not to think about buying one of these in 4 years time ;)

* = apart from the fact that I wouldn't be able to ride it at roughly more than 30% of its capabilities

'the ninja has to carry more corner speed to stay in the powerband', ie, his mate uses the wrong gear through the corners :)

Nice looking bike, aren't they about £15k new?

price: apparently so but he reckoned he managed to get his for £13.8k

as for his mate on the ninja, sounds like they'd have been better saving it for the track. Why did you crash? "I was trying to keep up with a bmw" whoopsy

Seen a few about, really like the look of them. They have a presence you don't get from other superbikes. And it's a Bimmer so you can be a **** on two wheels now as well!

well I would have one but I am being told I am too short for one of these so maybe that could be your excuse too :)

I quite like them, mainly because they're a little bit odd and I've only ever seen one up close.

I'm actually going off the d675 because every bugger seems to be getting one.

Reasons why not? The price, the price, oh and the price! And if you drop it, there won't be a single spare part around anywhere. But TBH I don't know enough about them to suggest more intelligent reasons.

Most humiliating way to crash ever! :smt082

Met a guy at the Ace with one, back in Feb, had a sit on it and general look about, big bike it's not a supermoto, lots of gucci bits bolted to an old boxer twin and well over priced.

Here's the one that was down there.

I really like the look of them and having sat on one it feels good.

I've been trying to get one for Operation: Test Ride Miles but have hit somewhat of a brick wall with this bike. Apparently they are built to order and the dealer I spoke to did not know of a demonstrator available in the UK. I've been meaning to email BMW direct to find out if there is one in the country I could ride. And as I found out with the RC8 if you don't test ride them you could end up with a bike that doesn't suit you.

That's the HP2 Megamoto, not the HP2 Sport.

Bike mag did a review of it (HP2 Sport) last year, want me to try and dig it out and scan it?

that would be a terrible thing to do. I'd struggle not to read it and obsess even more than I already am

Already found one con against all the pro's (it's kind of in line with YC's point about spares).... There's only one HP2 sport on bike trader and it's a cat D - current asking price is around £12,500. So yeah, they hold their value (even when they've been dropped!)

I don't think I'm ready for the starship enterprise just yet lol, and as I said before, I need to take up water colours or meditation before getting a bigger bike :)

Watched a guy going round knockhill once on a track day. He had no chicken strips, but when his bike was leant over 50 degrees his body was about bolt upright.... you'd have thought he was trying to balance a pint of water on top of his lid. If he'd shifted around and leant off the bike as far in the correct direction, his bike would have been bolt upright. Needless to say he was in the slow group.

Also seen some pretty quick guys with knackered knee sliders and chicken strips like that BMW. :smt102

Friend of mine is like that, just the big chicken strips are on an early R1, and the bit of the tyre that is used is invariable blued and rippled with heat. He's f##king rapid, I can't keep him in sight for long. Go figure.

What I really want to know is what bike the red frame, white bodywork BMW (looks sort of like a HP2, but a bit smaller, but bigger than their supermoto offerings) is that I often see in Barry and along the Wenvoe->Culverhouse. First time I saw it I thought it was a development bike, but have seen it too many times over too long a period. Chap riding it is a right hooligan, riding it through dragons teeth at over the speed limit, but getting away with it because most of his numberplate was missing. Usually in denim jeans and a BMW Dakar top. I wonder if he's one of the instructors at BMW's offroad school in south Wales.

Aye I know what you is saying... Different styles I guess. But still the right hand side one seems a little large, my winter chicken strips are like that.

Does he weigh a lot, I mean can he use his weight to move the bike round the corner? And to be fair you are restricted, anyone willing to go silly and into licence losing ground could probably leave you... Not trying to take anything away from the fella, your more than likely right. :p

Read a lot about these.

Meant to be a very pushed and tuned engine in them. Good power, but compared to the bikes of its class (Factory Aprillia, 1000cc superbikes) its left well behined. Good brakes, great amount of toys, fancy dash, fancy suspension etc. Actually good value for money with all the toys you get on it..

But realisticall why they have not sold them...

MVF4R Augusta, or one of these?? Augusta wins in every way.

So in other words, its a technologically great toy, but theres so much faster better machinery out there. I've got a few mag reviews at home with a very good report on them.

I like them, but I wouldn't own one unless it came up silly cheap.

And I also rode my first horizontally opposed BMW the other day, my god what a weird feeling. It jumps left to right on idle, the weight is out to the side of you, not under you. The front doesn't dive under braking (whole bike squats down). Very weird sensation.

+1. That's the thing. Nice looking bikes and doubtless very potent in the right hands, but unless you're some Dakar veteran with money to burn, most people are going to want some Italian exotica for that number of notes (or a Hardly, if they're a bit of a wrong 'un ;)).

I'll tell you something, I've only ever seen 1 HP2. I've seen many MV Agustas, an F4 Senna :o and the other special one that's bloody expensive. I've also seen 3 Desmosedeci. It'll be very rare anyone else has got the same bike as you..

How's about the BMW S1000RR - a LOT quicker, quite a bit cheaper & possibly available in time to be your Chrissie Prezzie to you, Paul!
No, I'm not going to contribute.
