I think there is a lot about this flying about the web, but I can't see anything obvious.

Wife has a new Vaio with Vista Home Premium. All works fine except when using wireless.
At first I couldn't connect to the router at all with wireless, but then WEP seemed to work. Loaded a few pages, but then connection seemed to go. Message shows page has no data. When I look at the network management dialogues it shows that the Vaio is connected to the router fine, but a big red cross between the router icon and the internet icon. Oh, and it sometimes will connect, then drop again. Seems fine when doing something for example I downloaded something or other ok, but if left for a few secs won't then 'carry on'

My head is going to explode soon. Anyone been here?

My Asus with XP connects fine, btw.

Yes, i know Visat is poo, Sky can be poo...
Things not an option: using Linux, a Mac, installing XP (unless I really have to i can't go through the pain of installing all the progs and **** again.....

I have a Vaio at home. Next to the clock there will be a little green box. This is the built in Sony Wireless software where you can turn wireless & bluetooth on/off. If you are this far then you will see two wireless connection options, 2.something ghz and 5.something ghz.

There can be conflict when both these are ticked but it seems to work fine for myself.

Hope you understand that and might give you something to try.

if you are getting this:

When I look at the network management dialogues it shows that the Vaio is connected to the router fine, but a big red cross between the router icon and the internet icon

this would suggest that the problem is not with your wireless but rather your internet connection.

How is your router connected to your phone line?

e.g. through a telephone extension lead?

Do you have more than one phone point in the house?

If so have you connected microfilters correctly to all the points?

My other laptop works fine (XP) as does everything else wired in. I can sit there with the ASUS working happily and the Vaio with Vista not. I agree, it looks like an outside looking problem, but everything else is playing on the Internet fine.

Sounds like a fault with the router software showing up as an incompatibility between it and the wifi driver on the client (or its default settings at least).

Had a similar thing recently with some of our users (some with Macs, some with Vista) and it was solved either by a router firmware update or a wifi adapter driver update. On one of them there were some fancy new Intel settings within the wifi card driver that the router didnt like.

Start by turning off any fancy 'Sony Superdooper booster' or 'enhanced this and that' type settings and try again. Also, I tend to find that the vendor wifi management software (Sony in this case) is more prone to this type of problem. If you are able to turn this off (usually a 'let Windows manage wifi' type setting) then you may find a more reliable connection.

Another thing thats popped up recently is the inability of some routers to handle DHCP option 43 requests from clients. Its been in the dhcp spec for some 11 years or so but only recently used by Windows in Vista and XP SP3. The issue causes the router to reboot and reinitialise over and over. Again a router firmware update resolved that.

Actually, clever fellow above may be onto something, but I have only had 5 mins of uniterrupted access so lets not be too hasty.

According to the Vaio I only had 2.4 enabled, but according to the Intel driver both that at 5.# were.

I will report back......

Bah! After my longest session yet, was fine until rebooted. Now back to square one. Checked still only on 2GHz, yes that has been saved. Switched off IPv6 or whatever as that can be a cause, still down.

Basically the connection seems to switch itself to 'local' occasionally.
