View Full Version : SV to Gixer 600.

I thought I'd chuck something together about the new bike. Might help someone in the same position as I was in a few weeks ago.
So I ended up buying a 2006 GSXR 600 K6....

In the end it cost me not a lot to upgrade from the SV, and I got
18 months newer
1500 miles less
new tyres
Better brakes, suspension, +50bhp
Shift light
Immobiliser
Tax is cheaper, insurance is only about £50 more than the SV. It uses about an extra 50p of fuel for every tank of about 120 miles. Servicing and tyres are going to be a bit more, maybe a couple of hundred quids worth a year.
Surprisingly its more comfortable to ride, less back pain, and still no wrist pain. I put 5500 miles on the SV in 11 months, and reckon the Gixer is going to be in for around 8000 a year with a trip to France.
Obviously its a lot quicker than the SV, its pretty nuts once it gets going. Its easy to ride sensibly as well, and doesn't seem to have any less grunt than the SV at lower revs. Not noticably anyway.
Its very easy to ride very quickly. Its stupidly easy to go from 70 > 140, should you want to. Whilst its easy to keep the SV at sensiblish speeds on the motorway, the GSXR just wants to go faster and faster.
So no regrets whatsoever about changing. I loved my SV, and it was great for the 11 months I had it. I would of been sad to see it go if it wasn't for the new bike.
Really glad I plumped up a bit of extra cash and had a bit of luck to get a K6 instead of the K5 I was looking at. I'm sure technically they are nearly identical, but I much prefer the asthetics and size of the K6.
The Gixer is just better in every way, and seemed like a natural progression for me!

how much of a difference do you feel from the v-twin? eg coming up to corners etc?
Do you mean engine braking? The Gixer has less, but its not a problem, and you soon forget about it and appreciate the much better brakes.
Its nicer in some ways, no more getting body slammed by a pillion every time you change gear!
On that note, my pillion hasn't complained yet!
Love it!!!! Abit common though them gsxr's :-), mind you not as common as thoughs pesky trumpet 675's... I'm just about to get my first new rear tyre, had almost 4000miles out of it so not too bad out of a sports tyre, i reakon i'd get alot more with a sport tourer. It's a good move from the SV imo, Still loving mine, enjoy!!!!

The thing you will not have experienced yet until you need it is just how much sharper and responsive the steering is compared to the SV. turns a BTM into f*cking hell.
looks nice, enjoy
If insurance is only a little more do you mind me asking how old oyu are? I have been getting quotes and its about 700 more for me lol

Nice one, I'm sure you will love it...... I was pretty much in the same situation as you.
The first few times I really rev'ed it over 9krpm shocked the hell out of me......even made me think bloody hell have I done the right thing here.
1 year on and I ride the nuts off the 600rr as I did the sv....thinking hmmm wish it has that little bit more, then you look at the speedo and your glad it doesnt.
I'm 25, and will have 1 years NCB at the end of this month.
I paid £225 TPFT on the SV, and have been quoted £260ish FC for the GSXR. Paid £50 to change to the GSXR for the last month of my policy. Its strange, on tesco compare I get the quote for £260 for the GSXR, the next price is more like £550. If I put in any other SS600 then they are all £550ish.

I'm amazed at that....I'm 25 and have 2 years NCD the cheapest I could get was £375 fully compy with £250 excess, I ended up going with carol nash for £450 as it included recovery/breakdown/EUcover/freecrashbungs.

Good stuff. one of my friends has one and said the engine braking was a huge difference. She keeps asking if i want a shot but i dont have the bottle yet incase i damage it. Its the k8 model. Had a shot of my friends ninja tho. But again, Nowhere near pushing it! Hopefully in a couple years i'll put my hands on one but for now, i'll learn my trade on the sv :)

How does the handling compare to an SV with progressive springs, anyone know? I'm also really surprised at that insurance quote, I guess you have a garage?
WOW i must be really high risk its as if the insurance companies know me personally!! im 25 with 1 years ncb and the cheapest supersport quote i can get is about 1100 quid!
Good luck with yours tho im sure your gonna absolutely love it its a goegeous bike :p

It'll wipe the floor with it.

Insurance is strange. I've got a good postcode (not actually in Plymouth).
This policy includes EU cover & ride any bike, and have recovery / breakdown with the AA!
Yes it is garaged.
I had a GSXR 1000 shock and Hagon springs in my SV, it handled nicely, much nicer than a standard one, but it doesn't really seem to compare to the Gixer as a package.

I'm loving the change to the K6 750 too, definitely worth it, especially hitting the limiter in 3rd ;)

My next bike in black. I have not yet ridden one but I am having one!
Looks very nice, seems everyone who has one has the same good things to say about them, they are Shell size too, allow me to get my feet down LOL.
Hope you have many miles enjoyment on your new baby.

I don't see the fuss to be honest, what's the point of spending a fortune on a new 600 when there are 750s around for a fraction of the cost.
Maybe a little older, but a little faster and a lot lazier. Depends how you get your kicks I suppose.

Something called personal preference comes into it and the fact that the insurance will not allow me to go up in cc's. It's natural progression aswell be stupid me jumping onto a 750 the 600 is manic enough. From what your saying though I might aswell go get a thou!

Whats the point in spending a fortune on an SV when you can get quicker bikes for less?
It will always be the same that you can get more for less if you want older.

the SV is plenty big enough, I dont want to go bigger think ill stick around the 600mark for a long time. I'm only tempted by the GSXR with its looks, thats why I'd want the new shape on and in white I think its stunning.

Well, good handling but keeping the cheap insurance is nice.
In retrospect I probably could have taken the bumming on the insurance on a 750 SRAD and come out ahead compared to that spent on mods. But, it would have probably gotten me into trouble.
I see what people are saying about progression and preference. Personally I wouldn't buy new or spend a load of money until I was at the level I wanted to stay at. If you see what I mean...

Im glad you are enjoying the GSXR!!! But what the hell man... You are advertising a shift light! I got one and tbh its a bit of a gimmick ha ha.
Have fun and take care! ;)
I think I understand Chris. Its certainly more fun to make your bike handle better than a modern out of the box bike by modifying and setting it up to suit yourself... :) Most people never even think about setting a bike up to suit themselves. Missing out imo :D

I have just took the next step too in march i traded in my sv for a K4 750 gsxr have now cover 2k on it and each time i take it out it just seems to get better and better, apart from the obvious increase in power and handling and brakes it just feels so much better than the sv and as has said before if your prepared to shop arround the insurance can be not to bad compared. I was paying £250 for me sv with 2 years NCB 37 yrs old changed it over to the gixer and the company i was with wanted £980, shopped arround and im now with motorcycle direct for less than what i was paying for the sv £188 and on monday me and a mate had a trip over to barmouth and we swapped bikes he has a y plate sv and the difference between the two was amazing! still cant stop grinning when i take it out!

Sweet!!!!!
Love that Miles. Although I'm pretty far away from Sportsbikes at the moment, I can still see myself getting one in the future. Ill just buy one with a shagged engine and put it in the garage to admire.
