Anyone else going to the SKC show at Ingleston this weekend.

I will be mostly getting my ears nipped about which one should we get all day Sunday.

Am i likely to see any of you there?

I definately want a proper dog, no ankle biters, no fashion accessories.

Rough shortlist.

Sayomed, Huskie, Malamute, Mastif, Alsatian, Doberman, ridgeback, Labrador, Akita, oh likes beagle (which is a little small for me)

Possibility of me working away in the future so want something imposing at home with oh.

I don't know to be honest
We had a bitch. Extremely well tempered. Obviously that's down to each individual dog and how it's trained but she was a very friendly dog. Used to take so much abuse from our jack russel puppy lol

unfortunately they are bred that way and a lot of GSD owners and breeders don't recognise them as proper GSD's - black/tan wins every time for me personally

sorry for the derail from your original question about who was going to the show

We won't be going... although it's a Champ show, our breeder is judging the Malamute class, so we won't have to make the long trip :D

Enjoy yourself at the show!!

Our mutt is 11 years old, still a pain in the butt, we love him all the same.(We've had him for 10 years!) C'mon the cat and dog home!!! Happy to give you pointers, also got Shonadoll as vet advisory.... Pick a mutt, bring it home and love the creature!

The expense is the veterinary fees and the kennels if you adopt ( I STRONGLY recommend you adopt!!!!) and the establishment should offer you free spaying/castration as part of your adoption package. Get a pooch!

No, few changes now, think due to the fact that rescue centres were getting returns.
Most rescue centres now charge an admin fee or "suggest a donation" of anywhere between £150 and £300. That is not an issue within itself, the problem is more deciding what we want and finding one.

+1 on getting a smelly mongrel from the dog home. Tell them you can't make the 'suggested donation' as you're about to spend £500 on fencing the bloody thing in.

Which you are...

missyburd

Although I'd say rescue dog everytime just on general principle, if it's an Alsatian I'd say get it from a pup. These are big dogs and the problem with rescues is their unknown histories. My dog was got at 3 years of age and although he's an absolute sweetie, he clearly had some issues with large men with sticks and people who smoked, probably something to do with him apparently being a police dog. We think he was one of those who got so far with the training and then something just wasn't right so he didn't make it (the police only take the BEST dogs, if there's even slightly something the matter with temperament they'll just say no).

On the other hand, rescue dogs are the most affectionate animals, they seem to know you've "rescued" them and will repay you with a lot of love and loyalty as a result (disclaimer: I cannot guarantee this is the case with ALL rescues :-P)

Best of luck, hope you come to a decision :-)

Do your research thoroughly before considering an Akita-we see a lot of experienced handlers who find them difficult, and a lot end up in rescues.

I know you can't tar all with the same brush, but part of the worry I have with them is that they show no warning signs of aggression at all, and can go from nothing to attack mode with zero warning, one of our vet nurses was badly bitten by one.

St Bernards are big slavering hairy high maintenance things...yik...
Bernese(sp) Mountain dogs are cool. but also big slavering hairy beasts...lol
German Shepherd any day....

Though I love my Lab, wouldn't change her for the world. Not really guard dog material though...

Kilted Ginger
16-05-09, 09:01 PM
The slavering thing is a bit of a misconception, they (like all dogs) only slaver when their saliva glands start, ie when they are expecting food, so if you dont feed them treats then they should (theoretically) only drool at dinner time. The ones at the dog shows wear bibs to catch the drool but this is because they are constantally baited to get them to show well. Their lips are a slightly different set up so the drool spills a bit more, hence the reputation.

Saw a BMD pup today, sneakily took a pic as you don't see many as puppies these days, well I don't anyway!

http://img42.imageshack.us/img42/568/dscf3365.jpg

Newfoundlands are big "slathery" dogs too but as KG rightly says, they only do it when there's grub about. When I went to Crufts a couple of years ago we saw the Newfie section and the show dogs were all wearing bibs, very sweet lol

Jillyburd
16-05-09, 10:25 PM
Crikey! So much choice! Whats it gonna be KG? Have you thought of Greyhound rescue? Those dogs need minimal exercise and are very docile... Alternatively, we have a rat out the back who reckons he's part of our brood and I'm happy to donate the clever super healthy creature to anyone who wants him before putting down the poison... :(

Kilted Ginger

Yeah, next door just got a greyhound from the rescue, sorry i know they have a hard life but i just cant take to them, too skinny i think, not sure, just not for me.

Anyway, I've not succumbed to the pressure yet and actually agreed to an addition to the household. Even if i do nothing will happen until after the wedding.

I'm glad to hear you won't be making any hasty decisions. Pets are as big a responsibility as children and do cost money for veterinary fees, ongoing worming, kennels, boosters etc. If you get a dog, it'll NEED you to parent it. Good luck with the search! :)

Just back from the shoe, Malamutes were teriffic, Berniese mt dogs were stunning, newfoundlands gorgeous but very big, Samoyeds (stirred up a lot of memories, hazel would have them but i'm not sure if i want the same breed again) lovely but yappy. Alsations tidy, not that impressed with the mastiffs but the rotweillers (now with tails) were surprisingly attractive. more confused than ever ;)

we got a rescue pup a few years ago. It was 10 weeks old. It was a lab cross. Ideal temperament for family with young kids. WRONG!! It took an instant dislike to Connor (Those of you that know him, will understand) vet said it was trying to be the dominant pup (Con was 18 months old). It bit him every day and eventually after 2 weeks, it attacked him. He was sitting watching tv in another room, dog ran into room, dragged him off the seat and clawed at him and bit him (just little nips) til he was bleeding. It went back that day. It turns out it was a lab crossed with german shepherd and that is not a good mix - wish they had told me before we took it.

KG what about Irish setter - had one as a child, lovely animal but maybe not the best guard dog in the world

I saw a beautiful GSD out on the beach today, they really are a pleasure to watch. You don't often see them playing with children either (just my experience) but he was having a jolly old time playing fetch with a little lad :-)

German Shepherds are brilliant with children as well. I have had 2 kids since we have had our dog and he is great with the kids. Even the neighbours kids like to play with him.

He looks the part but is really a big softie. I am sure Bibio can tell you more about my dog!!

For kids, defiently.
Had no trouble with the current 7 -10 y/o (I don't keep track), not as stupid as people think, having some issues with eating, a right softie, not tempremental at all, never seen her lose her rag as much as I have annoyed her, hides behind my mum if anything barks at her ( sh!tzu's included).
Don't grow overly big either.

go for an irish setter - they are beautiful dog with a great temperment (good call kitkat)
don't like white GS - so guaranteed for me to be reallly nervous when i come round (got bitten by one)
if you can rescue one then thats great but you have to do what you think is right and go with your gut instinct

http://puppydogweb.com/gallery/irishsetters/e.htm

and not the best of guard dogs - but imposing enough to put anyone who didn't know then off attacking the house. Jasper was extremely loyal and would only fight when owner was threatened

One thing to be aware of with rescue centres- some of them are really strict with people who work-daft really. So worth letting them know you plan on having a neighbour or dogwalker come in if you are both out.

Luckily I have the best neighbour ever-the Jillyburd, who notices when my husband doesn't arrive home as planned and goes and lets my doggy boys out, rather than them having to cross their paws or pee everywhere!!
