View Full Version : Runway + SV1000 = top speed test
OK I have a riding course to attend at a military airfield this weekend. So that gives me a long straight bit of road with no other traffic (perhaps a helicopter or two), no junctions and no speed cameras.
Hopefully the instructors will allow a bit of messing about so hopefully I can get in a couple of high speed runs to see how fast it will actually go and as I have a tracking GPS device I should be able to see just how far out the speedo is when you get into three figures as GPS is usually fairly accurate in a straight line.
What do you recon it'll do?
Naked SV1000 with 30,000 miles under it's belt.
BMC induction system
CCC cans (with baffles in)
Standard gearing
Fat bloke in reasonably snug leathers
How quick do you think it'll go and what will the difference be between the GPS and speedo at that speed?
I tried something similar when in Europe. With an indicated 176 Mph on the speedo the GPS was reading 163 MPH. Tacho was reading 10.5K. My SV had 40K on the clock and is fully faired. Oh, it's not stock either. I've had the heads of for a bit of fiddling and a few other mods.
A word of warning. Be very careful looking anywhere other than forward when doing this and be very, very careful lifting your head up after looking at the GPS if it's in a tank bag. You do not want the wind getting under your lid and choking you.

Luckily the GPS has a log feature so it'll log max and plot the speed up to that. I'll be checking out the speedo and Tacho only if I can see them without moving. Hopefully everything else will be well and truly tucked in.
Just checked the tyre pressures and found 19 front and 22 back. May explain the slightly wallowing feeling I've had recently when pushing hard in bends. Would have been interesting tomorrow.

I reckon 144 top speed
Tacho will probably be 12-17mph out at that speed
I think the only certain way to check max is to ask one of the friendly traffic officers to stand on a motorway bridge and shine a laser at your headlamp while you are making a speed run

you will have to do a timed run between two fixed markers to calculate the precise speed as the royal air force do not treat satnav and gps equipment as being accurate, and they have bae systems as technical advisor's.
It was raining with a serious cross-wind so we were not allowed to play at all. :( We did however manage to complete the braking course we were supposed to be doing and I am now amazed at just how quick I can stop from three-figures (in the wet with wind) compared to how quick I could stop when I got there.
I have however just found out they will be holding a track-day on the super-grippy perimeter road and include the mile straight of the main runway with the local police setting up a radar speed-check point towards the end of the straight.
Now just need to convince the boss to let me have a day off work.

But that'll be wrong 'cos Cops lasers are not passed for use on bikes are they ;)

I meant that is about the speed he will get before one shoots him :)

It's an advanced braking course run by TVAM. (The advanced riding club in Wokingham that you've been threatening to come along to for months)
Basically covers high speed braking and swerving in a safe environment. Includes such fun phases as "right now go along here at 40 mph and lock your front wheel.......no, seriously........let me demonstrate............now your turn....."
The track day is club related and not open to the public.
ahh yes that IAM which i should have a day off booked for! Sounds good.
