What are these for do they have any function other than being just and accessory?

I believe it's used by racers to keep the brake fluid warm, I dont think it really has a function on road bikes

Why would you want warm brake fluid?

Grinch

Yes why warm fluid?

I have a thundercats one... it was a sweat band not a Reservoir jacket, its just cus the retailers have seen a market for it.

And I have it cus its the Thundercats... do I need another reason?

Its just another halfrauds accessory idea.
If its cos the bike leaks fluid take the damn thing back as its not fit for purpose.
If its to stop flud spilling when you're re-filling it, take it ff when you're finished.
So none of those things then.

If its to keep the fluid warm you have more chance of that happenign by holding it in your hands for a few mins. How is a headband type thing gonna have any thermal properties? pmsl at that.

One guy tried to say somehting very technical to me once about the suns UV radiation breaking down the molecular structure of the fluid...so i guess thats why a lot of biks have clear reservoirs, so we can crash due to useless brake fulid that got itself a sun tan and decided not to work any more...and we can sue the bike nmanufactureres now. Yay.

About as required as colour coded pegs and matching chain. Nothing wrong with al that if its your thing but its only an accessory.

BTW before anyone thinks i'm being harsh about accessories on bikes...i had blue footpegs on my old bike and spent a veritable fortune on LED indicatros too :)

I thought hot brake fluid contributed to brake fade.....so you wouldnt want to keep it warm

I got one from a magazine and put it on just because I had one. Now it's on I like it, as I think the reserviour is a bit bulky and looks turd!

maybe to stop a stray stone splitting it?

I'd image there is more chance of winning the lottery tha that actually happening tho.

that is the racers answer, the mechanics answer it will absorb any spilt fluid in fast pit garage actions.

The trend started with race bikes years ago that used a brake fluid that photo-degraded. The UV in daylight would cause the fluid to break down more quickly than usual.
The mechanics covered the reservoir to keep the UV out.

Some reservoirs are clear plastic so that it's easy to keep a visual check on your fluid level. Some are metal, but have an inspection window.
The plastic type obviously allows more UV through.

The use of them on roadbikes is simply fashion...

If you're happy with it, great... It probably matches the collection of purple anodised bolts that you've fitted.

As brake fluid does not have it's own body temprature covering it will not keep it any warmer...or colder  than not covering it.

I would believe the Sun argument on a miniscule basis
The spillage argument possibly racers that the brake fluid heats up, expands & spills over :smt102
But mostly because it looks chavtastic :D

I thought it was invented by motorcycle magazines, so they could stick it to their covers and therefore entice punters into buying it.

Lol at the people (if they seriously) think it serves a purpose.

It's a fashion item. :D

Btw can I get any SV ones? Such as with the SV logo on them or something?

I've been told that it's for absorbing brake fluid if it leaks out of the reservoir, to save it dripping onto the bike and damaging parts, paint etc?

Wouldn`t a decent "O" ring sort that problem out though ? , they are just copying the GP boys back in the 90`s

i think they are so pointless i have a halo 3 one on my bike hahahahahah!!

It's for 3 reasons, usually in the following order of importance:

1. Cheap chav bling.
2. To help prevent marking of surrounding areas with any brake fluid either when some seeps out past the o-ring, or during quick fluid changes.
3. Racers soak them in ice water before a race and then put it over the resevoir. This helps keep the fluid a bit cooler for a bit longer and marginally delays the point at which brake fade sets in.

1. Is pointless. 2 and 3 are pointless on the road.

I was given one so I stuck in round the reservoir. Wouldn't bother if it wasn't free.

I was told it's because racers are paranoid about fluids, so if they see a bit on their visor they poo themselves and worry that the engine's blowing or someone in front is blowing out oil. Thus to prevent any confusion if there's a leak from the reservoir, stick a sweatband on it to soak up any drips. I couldn't tell you if that's the truth though.

Well when I fitted one on my bike I got another 10bhp. Did no one else get the same results? :)
