Hello all,
My dad is looking at buying a 2nd hand sports car for around 50k, he's asked for my input as he said he can pop me on the insurance so I need to ensure he gets the best one!
The choices that we are considering are:
Aston Martin V8 Vantage
Jaguar XKR
Maserati Gransport
Porsche Carrera 2s
I'm pushing for either the Maser or Aston as they're a little different and also my dad has owned the old shape XK8 and an older 911. I know a fair bit about the cars in terms of performance, maintenance costs etc just wondering what you guys think and what you'd go for
I wouldnt have the Maserati thats for sure. Out of those choices, it would be the Porsche then the Aston, then the Jag. They are all very different cars and do differnt things. So its really what he wants from it. I reckon he should be able to get a half decent DB9 for £50k or nearest damn it anyway, and thats the aston to have.
I would also add into the mix a Merc SL of some flavour, AMG65 or similar or a Bently Continetal GT
it would the 911 or the aston for me as well.
it's a dilemma I would really like to have tho. i'd be out test driving as many different cars as possible. maybe there's some that he just wouldn't feelcomfortable in.
does have to be something pretty exotic or would something like an m3 or even. Honda nsx be considered?

So, the Prodrive, the Tata, the Fiat or the, umm, Porsche?
I'd take the Prodrive ;-)

He'd prefer something more exotic. I mentioned the Mercedes CL, BMW M6, and Audi R8 but he wasn't really interested & he told me it has to be European.

I would but a ferrari 360 myself, or you could ever pick up an early Lambo Gallardo for that sort of money.
Why buy a sports car when you can have a supercar

I wouldnt touch the Maserati.
Ive never seen one reliable enough to get beyond the end of my road.

Even the new ones?
Even the new ones?
The turismo is reliable apparently, I know of at least one that has racked up 20k in europe in the last year without a glitch.
Not sure about other models though, you hear rumors of maser owners have 'minor' problems that required the car being recovered and spending 4k
BUT, I reckon its like the same stigma that is stuck on ducatis, most people really dont have a clue and there mates mate had one that was never running.

So the R8 didnt tickle him? Well fek me thats the first person who i've heard of not being turned into a slobber fest at the mention of owning one.
And i was the first to vote for the Masserati. Yay me!
My attitude is that far too many Astons are driven by old men and if i was spending that kind of money i'd spend it on something a little more unique. Hence the Maserrati. The quatroporte is nice too btw.

I'll be the 2nd then because they dont float my boat either..
I've driven an XKR and it was very enjoyable, but it didnt feel a special as the 911 did that I had driven 10 minutes before hand. I dont know why, and the gearbox had alot of lag in it between pulling the paddle and then getting the gear it didnt feel rewarding to drive in the way the Porsche did.
Cant comment on the other two as not driven them....

Wow, i sit stunned. I genuinelt thought everyone and their dogs and hell even their cats like the R8.
you live and learn i guess.
BTW if any of you happen to have an R8 and feel this way then just let me know and i'll happily come round and drive it away for you :)

porch is too common. the maz wont get past the end of the street and cost you mega bucks. the aston will break down but not as much as the maz however the jag looks boring in that company.
personally the aston

I'd want 25 bikes instead!
If i had that kinda money to throw at a car i'd look at these aswell:
-BENTLEY CONTINENTAL GT 6.0 W12
-Ferrari 360
-Nissan GT-R
-LAMBORGHINI Gallardo
-AC COBRA 427
-FERRARI 550 Maranello
-MERCEDES-BENZ C63 AMG
Could go on but theres so much more for that kind of money, and surely spending that on a car you've got to have the funds to maintain it so the Maserati shouldn't be a problem :-D. My mums boss has a Maserati and it's a beautiful car, he's never had any problems with his as far as i know, same as this one >>>>> http://search.autotrader.co.uk/es-uk/www/cars/MASERATI/Ne-2-4-5-6-7-8-27-44-49-53-61-64-67-103-133-146-236,N-163-184-240-4294961431/advert.action?R=200920334232400&distance=70&postcode=TA2+6SB&channel=CARS&make=MASERATI&model=&min_pr=40000&max_pr=50000&max_mileage=&vehicleYearOfManufacture=2006&vehicleRegLetter=56

Aren't the Astons a little dicey on the reliability too? Lovely cars though.

I'd say somethin' you're not gonna have to spend millions on afterwards :p not going on about reliability, i know F all about that, Nissan GTR looks wicked when you see one. And i know they're popular, but Porsche Turbo's will always turn heads.

My dad is after a car which is pretty new so on the middle-end of its steep depreciation and with low miles. The two ferraris and Lambo are nice but my dad doesn't have any use for them. He doesn't do track days, only nails the throttle every now and then, and has his show off car already.

Well I was thinking about the cost but for him it was more of the inconvenience of the car not working properly and having to get it fixed all the time. What other similar European sports car could you recommend?
for 50k or under
not bmw, audi, or merc
<2 years old with hardly any miles?

Apparently they were improved after the DB7 vantage, but have still heard some niggles about them

last time I looked Germany was in Eurpoe.

at 50K for a second hand car the true money has been spent, hence the niggles have been ironed out.
as the pervious owner that bought it full price .. found said niggles and bougth an iron.

If you have a flash sports car you're automatically a ****. Unless you have an Aston, in which case people won't go out of their way to spit on you.
If you were to buy a Porsche you may as well have bought a 1960's VW Beetle and turbocharged the engine.
It's either the Jag or the Aston. Best of (sort of) British.

My poe o.o!!!
I must admit i thought the same but doesn't he mean that he wants a European car to be picky, and even then he discounted a bunch of great cars that happened to be German?
BTW i voted for the Maserati, it's the only one out of that lot that i'd openly go up to the owner and ask to take pictures of his/her car. The rest i'd just nod in appreciation to.

If he's looking for a car thats practical, reliable and as new as possible then why not look at the Jaguar XF, he could afford a brand new top of the range with all the accessories model and have a warrenty with it. Plus it doesn't look like a c0ck mobile..

I never said it wasn't in Europe....The reason why he doesn't want bmw merc etc is because he's just spend 53k on a bmw 535d so doesn't want another car from same/similar brand

Well it looks pretty unanimous that the AMV8 is the most prefered, what's what I was thinking too. Hopefully we'll have time to head down to Aston today and go for a spin :)

No it looks like a rep mobile.
Gotta be the aston, class and got a bit of poke as well.
Porsches have some design flaw by which any person is transformed into a total c##t as soon as their rse touches the seat. And, every hair gelled squash playing c##t of an estate agent in town has one too.
The maserati... well it's the usual wop form-before-function ethos. So it won't work, and it'll just look tarty.
The jag is lovely but doesn't seem to have much special about it compared to the aston.
Then again that's my taste, I don't see the fuss about ducatis, and I'd rather have something with more of a fun than serious attitude to it, preferably something a bit bonkers, maybe a little bit orange and quite possibly quite a lot Austrian. So, he should get a KTM X-bow!
If I had £50k to spend on a sports car, I'd spend £30k on a Boxster or S2000 and squander the rest.......................:drink:
.....then again this is my idea of a sports car, I'll get my coat.........

My dad told me he saw a maseratti filling up the other day. £90 of shuper unleaded
Would have to be the porsche outta them lot for me.
Personally, I'd be getting meself a GT500 (or if too much, the standard mustang (£15,000 on autotrader)) and using the rest to insure myself and pay for its drinking habbit and trying to adapt the handling to what its race brothers use in the GT series.
