got a acer aspire 3003lm (off top of my head) that i used to use in the garage for hooking up to hi-fi and for how-to guides

it developed this problem where it would lock up and the HDD would load for a sec then stop then start then stop........... and so on, this would continue for 2-3 mins or until you thumped it so hard the HDD shut off and restarted. The only way this problem was temporarily fixed was to wipe off everything and re-install windows.

anyway going back about 8 months or so ago i re-installed everything, then immediately after reinstalling it proceeded to still do it, so it then ejected itself out of my lap into the wall and then the floor...... quite violently 8-[

probably a long shot here but i broke the screen as when you turn it on the screen is really really dark, so much so you cant really see anything, had it in bits and cant see anything visually wrong with where it plugs into the main board ect........... anyone got any ideas or has it killed itself 8-[

If you've broken the screen, it'll be replacement screen time I expect. But its hard to tell without looking at it properly.

TBH a new screen is probably going to cost as much or maybe more than a new laptop willl....

If its had a wall to laptop interface it might well be something else is wrong as well as the screen being knackered...

No. But I reckon you have.

haha, oh so you saw then ;)

well i just poked it a bit and put it back together, it switches on and boots up, i can see the black windows screen that you get when switching it on but can only see "windows" very faintly, its like some ones turned the brightness right down

Screen is broken or the cable to the screen, my nans laptop if you move the lid about some times it will go really dark but you can still see everything on the screen.

General consensus of opinion is a goosed screen (not surprised really) , have you seen the prices of new laptops recently and Netbooks , not worth the repair costs IMHO , I have been seriously considering buying a Samsung NC20 netbook .

I smashed my screen a few months ago, got a screen off ebay for £50 and fixed it my self, it takes about 20 minutes to change them easy as pie :D

A new screen can be about £150 plus fitting, which is fiddly but quite doable. I've done two (Samsung and Dell). Do a bit of a search for UK mail order places, and also check the price with the manufacturer first (the Samsung one was £150 for OEM). First though I would suggest plugging it into a monitor to make sure it's starting up okay and that the screen is the only problem.

The screen might not be broken as such but from what you have described (you can see the Windows screen faintly) it sounds like the backlight is broken.

These can be bought cheaply and separately see Ebay. Here's (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/CCFL-LCD-Screen-Backlight-bulb-for-15-4-Laptop-screens_W0QQitemZ120363270829QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK _Computing_LaptopAccess_RL?hash=item120363270829&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=72%3A1690%7C66%3A2%7C65%3A12%7C39%3A1%7C 240%3A1318%7C301%3A1%7C293%3A1%7C294%3A50) an example, but you need to buy the correct length for your screen size.

Here (http://www.instructables.com/id/Laptop_backlight_repair/)is a general guide to replacing the backlight:

If its not the backlight tube itself then it may be the invertor that powers the tube. These can also be bought fairly cheaply second hand.
