The Halo books are surprisingly good actually, when I saw the opening clip to Halo with the Pillar of Autumn fighting against the Covenant cruisers I was curious about the ships, their technology, how they came to be fighting etc. and the Halo books answer all those questions and a lot more. I think Eric Nylund is a decent author as I've enjoyed his non-Halo work.

Necromunda is a Warhammer tabletop game, it's set within the main WH40K universe within the overpopulated hive cities where there's considerable and brutal short range combat between rival gangs. I haven't read any of those books but I do read a lot of the Warhammer 40K books which is the main game, I enjoy the universe and there's a good selection of books to choose from. The Gear of War soliders are very similar to the genetically enhanced power armoured Space Marines within the Warhammer 40K universe so I definitely think it's worth a look.

If do fancy this route I'd recommend Horus Rising as this is the first of the Horus Heresy series set ten thousand years before the current time. Within this universe the Emperor of mankind created 20 legions of Space Marines and sent them out to reunite mankind. It was all going well until his favourite son who'd been Warmaster basically turned to evil (or Chaos as it's known) and along with almost half the other legions turned against the Imperium pitting Space Marine against Space marine. This may seem like a spoiler but it's always been one of the most defining and well known events within the universe.

I wouldn't say it's too geeky for someone who has started a thread on videogame books, while the origins are different (one's a computer game, one's a tabletop game) the books are similar except there's a lot more to dig into with the Warhammer universe. I find it a bit frustrating with video game books as there's rarely more than a handful available.

In case you're wondering about order for the Halo books, in release order they are:

Fall of Reach - starts off a few centuries before the computer game but finishes at the start of Halo: Combat evolved
The Flood - The story of the computer game basically although also follows what the humans and aliens were doing on Halo as well as the MC
First Strike - Immediately after the end of Halo: Combat Evolved although doesn't tie in to any of the other games

All three of the above feature John-117 from the games, after this point however he is no longer involved.

Ghosts of Onyx - Starts off around the time of the earth invasion although doesn't tie in to Halo 2 at all and goes its own way

Contact Harvest - A prequel book set at the very start of the Covenant invasion although no Spartans feature at all (aside from Johnson although that's debated), while it's a prequel I wouldn't read it first as it assumes you've read the main trilogy.

Cole Protocol - Another prequel set after Contact Harvest, I've not read this one.

I thought the original trilogy was extremely good, Ghosts of Onyx not bad but I didn't think much of Contact Harvest hence I'm not planning on picking up Cole Protocol until it's out in paperback.

i've bought the first four halo book's but i'm struggling to find cole protocol and apparently theres a new un coming out too which i'll pre order and i've just seen that the author of the first gears of war book is doing a sequel out in a coupla months so i'll be all sorted for a while it's much cheaper than buying videogame's and they last longer awesome.

I got both the Mass Effect books cos I hadn't seen them in a bookstore before and didn't want to miss out (love Mass Effect). Haven't read them yet, I'm still making my way through the entirety of Dune.

I also read the Wing Commander novel (based on Secret Missions 2) and the Resident Evil 2 novel. Both were average at best.

I've read the three main Halo books (The Fall of Reach, The Flood and First Strike) and I've just started reading Ghosts of Onyx.

They're all a really good read and if you're interested in the games and Halo universe they help you to understand so much more.

The only disappointing thing I find is that they're not all written by the same author. Most of them are written by Eric Nylund who IMHO is teh best of the authors they use.

There's also a Halo Graphic Novel.

What's the new Halo novel?

Necromunda is a great 'universe' (well, part of the WH40K universe ;)), but I've not read any of the novels set there. Good game mind, nice to have something so playable that doesn't require £200+ worth of figurines per player to have a decent battle. :)

I like Delaques with hair/heads from Goliaths, so that they look like characters from Syndicate. Not played any Warhammer in about a decade, but it's all still up in my parents' loft.

also just ordered cole protocol so i think i've got the whole halo series now for some reason it was more money than the rest(twice the price £9 infact) which is why i had put off ordering it but i spose it's cause it's a yank import oh well spose it's cheaper than buying a 360 game that'll last me a day if that is there a dead space novel out or is it just a graphic novel thing not too bothered about getting it if it's graphic i'm reading like a trooper now.

I enjoyed the Star Wars novels that featured the Clone Troopers from "Republic Commando" , the novels were a spin off from the game , I plan on picking the Halo series up soon enough , once I finish reading the Harry Potter books (Adult Covers I may hasten to add :))

I like reading about the history of gaming as I was practically there from the beginning and really enjoy going down memory lane over the old 8 bit games :)

I read a few Star Trek books back in the day and they were alright... they didn't half drag on a bit in places, though.

Is the Cole Protocol really that much?!
I need to buy that and Contact Harvest and that's all of them.

Just started reading Ghosts of Onyx. TBH it was the one I least wanted to read for some reason. But so far it's my favourite. It's refreshing that it isn't based entirely around Master Chief and you get to know a lot more about the Halo universe, also Eric Nylund is an awesome writer.

Buy the other two when I get chance.

Since you read the books, ZSV, do you also play the games?

In the books, are the battles at all like the games in their descriptions?

Which is to say, armies of Spartans and Elites hopping at each other screaming 'FAG NOOBLAR!'

Marcus revved his chainsaw and cut the Locust in half. Blood and guts sprayed everywhere. Baird looked on, confused by the strange arousal he felt. Then Dom pulled out his Longshot and blasted a Locust's head off. It exploded like a watermelon, with eyeballs and chunks and it was all individually lightsourced. Dom grunted. Marcus grunted back. Then they forward-rolled repeatedly off down the street.

:p

I'd be afraid of reading a Halo book in case some 14 year olds saw me and came up and say 'ZOMG HALO R00LZ ADDS ME TO YUOR FREINDS LIST MY TAG IS +-+-KILLERKLOWN-+-+ ADN MY BUD NATHAN IS PIMPGHETTODAWG666BIZNATCH69 MY CLAN WILL PWN YOU LIEK TEH FAGORT NIB TAHT YOU ARE LOLOLOLOLOLOL ROTFEL!!!!11111oneoneone LOOSER!'*

There was a guy last night on Call of Duty 3 (yes, I still play it, mostly because I would have thought only the hardcore would still play it and all the kids would be off circlejerking over how great they *think* Call of Duty: Woof at War is) who needed a railway spike to the face. He just talked constantly, swearing and calling everyone mofos and such, when I just happened to CLEAR MY THROAT and he heard it he start saying 'STFU SUICIDE PERKIES NOBODY SAID YOU COULD SPEAK YOU MOFO etc etc etc' and swore and cursed and used racial slurs throughout the entire game. He was second from the bottom, better only than someone who'd timed out and lay in our base staring at the wall for the whole game. This was after he'd told everyone if they didn't all hit 'ready' to start the game he'd come over and rape and murder all our families.

When the game ended, everyone came back into the lobby for the next game and there he was. The room dropped from 12 players to 4 in about 3 minutes as this guy just kept ranting and swearing at everyone. Negative feedback (for trash talk), Complaint Filed (for all the racial and homophobic slurs).

Compared to that, the 14 year olds (screaming elmos I call them) are almost funny.

I think I might get the GoW books, I found their alternate world (Earth, but not! Is the nation anthem Que Serra Serra?) really interesting.

right i have finished reading mass effect revelation and gotta say it's one hell of a book you can tell karpshynn wrote the game as it all ties together brilliantly with the whole mass effect universe and show's just how brutal saren was as a spectre and how anderson flunked getting in with the council i enjoyed it worth it for any sci fi fan's i'd say especially if you enjoyed the game.
