View Full Version : Would it be hypocrisy to..........

report someone for having an illegal plate when you yourself have one.........

Well the answer is obviously yes, isn't it.

However if you then add the the following, at what point does it become ok.

1) The plate was grey on black

2) The spacing had been altered to spell out a word "@ 80SS @" @ symbols to not put the full reg on the internet.

3) The car was a BMW

4) The car was an X-Series 4x4

5) The standard of driving was consistant with BMW's driven around Brixton.....

Answers on a poll please :)

Nothing irritates me more than haveing a number plate like that, i saw a merc once and it had screws in each corner to hold it on, then in the middle of front and back in some letters / numbers he stuck the coloured screw caps on to make it look like it spelt a name shouldnt be allowed a personal plate if they are going to abuse it.

You and your class war

However in this case it is probably the drug trafficking classes.

As an aside I saw one of those curvey/flat BMW 4x4s the other day in Matt Black. I was so impressed I nearly traded in my Range Rover for one.

I can think of far more irritating things. Why did it irritate you? Would it have been irritating on a Nova, or funny? Was it irritating and not funny as it was on a Merc?

On, no here I go again.......where's my tablets........

An illegal plate is an illegal plate.

It's either legal, or it's not.

There's a saying about people in glass houses involving stones...

I'm sure that the same cops who waste their time giving tickets to bikers with small plates, instead of solving real crimes, will be along shortly to waste even more time on Mr BMW... ;) :p

:) even on a nova it would, if it says (this aint correct its just something ive made up) A A55HLE instead of AA55 HLE (sorry only example i could come up with) then you may think wtf? and by the time theyve booted it after crashing into you you might not of got it.

I don't agree. There's reasonable and downright stupid and flouting the law.

Like a smaller but perfectly legible and legally fonted smaller plate so it don't get broken trail riding plate ;) compared with a plate that looks like your name, same way as I can type c0ck here.

If it was that black and white, plod would never let us off for this and that would they?

Live and let live. :-$

Did it truly upset you enough to bother trying to talk to the associated office?

If they are anything like the DSA (who mailed me back with the answer to a question I did not ask and totally ignored the one I did ask), you will feel like you are beating your head against a wall while a cruel man squeezes your blobs! :smt104

I seriously had to read that a couple of times to make sure I understood. My brain read the last word differently. :-k

Other than that, I agree, it's not worth the hassle when there's far more stressful things in life.

Well SK your plate has a logo behind the text, and i think the font is different and its definitely smaller? The guy in the BMW is probably doing it for the same reason you are, because it looks good.

Solution SK is to send Magnum the details and get him to report the driver. Also get him to say that the bloke was driving like a prat...problem solved!

I don't think its hypocrisy. The standard employed here, is that you're reporting him for his plate primarily because he was driving like a muppet. The reason we don't get reported for our plates is because we don't drive like muppets. Same standards applied to both situations - no hypocrisy.

indeed

I had thought that the format of the first post would have made it clear.

Mr BMW was driving like an idiot - choices for recourse are

a) report to the cops who do nothing

b) report to DVLA who I believe would have to do something.

So its not about him having a dodgy plate, as I admit I also have one, its about using that to get some payback.

Kind of like doing Capone for Tax Dodging rather than Racketeering.....

If you notice its because of his dangerous driving that I was pondering what could be done......

Him possibly losing his private plate and a fine seemed appealing.

I take it that you have recorded the plate registration? Providing that you have that piece of information there are a couple of things that you can do. :smt045

Firstly, you need to track down an ex Stasi (http://www.britannica.com/EBchecked/topic/563751/Stasi) Hitman and explain your findings. For a nominal fee and supply of a suitable weapon (http://www.gunsamerica.com/910922953/Guns/Rifles/Barrett-Rifles/Barrett_99A1_Kit_32_50BMG_Bolt_Action_Single_Shot_ NE.htm), you can have the bad driver taken out and I don't mean for lunch! :smt077

If bad drivers were made aware of the fact that their poor behaviour could have serious consequences, maybe they would be more civilised. :smt045
We could introduce a new fixed penalty for parking on double yellow lines just before a set of road works on the sea front (that was a BMW too). For a crime like this your average hit man could break an arm or a leg.

For nearly running over a little Jayneflakes on her little CG125 while you attempt to undertake in your huge white van, a hit man could cut off your thumbs! :-dd

Or maybe you could just take a Buddhist view and let Karma catch them up by itself? :sunny:

So what was bad about his standard of driving that you need to report?

I do hate some of this stereotypical rubbish about people with blacked out beemers and what they are likely to be involved in, bullsh1t. It's just like saying every biker is a hairy fat fook, going on the Harley Davidson stereotype (okay so I fit that ).

I don't entirely get why you want to report the guy when you have an illegal numberplate yourself. I'm sure you do more incriminating things on the road in a day than he does ;)

Dangerous Driving without witnesses = talking to

Private Plate with dodgy spacing and non-standard colouring = possible more hassle.

Thats where I was coming from.

Not worth the effort, IMO.

Report for dangerous driving, cops go around to "have a word" and notice dodgy plate for themselves.

erm , David do you not have anything better to do with your day??

I dont mean to be funny mate but honestly, you ride in London and most car drivers think the same about your riding as you do of this car..

How many times have you been reported for your plates?, or your dangerous driving??

Right, before this gets too out of hand, some info. (cut and pasted from an IM conversation I had with someone about it).

All I was trying to do was evalute my thought processes :) - Yes there WAS a BMW, yes it WAS a 4x4, Yes it did have a grey on black plate that read "@ 80SS @" (with that spacing) no, there was no incident - I pulled out of a junction behind him, followed him for 30 seconds then I turned off that road - I had a "thats ridiculous" moment - its so OBVIOUSLY illegal, then caught myself because none of my bikes have legal plates, saw the hipocracy, then tried to work out at what point is the line crossed at - so came up with what I had HOPED would be an interesting, light-hearted thread about that subject - after all EVERY one of us does something dodgy on their bike every time they go out - yet we all complain when someone else does anything that WE see as a problem

Exactly my point - but we all do it - the question really was at which point do we each NOT find it to be hypocritical, hence the sliding-scale poll.

Not really, no.

Do I mind if someone else has an illegal numberplate? No. If someone speeds, or crosses solid white lines? No.

In fact, the only person I remember being cross with whilst on the road, over the last year, was, erm, me. :(

Ditto to that

And seeing as '+1' ain't a proper post, I shall do one.

I've just got back on the internet and seeing as the '.org' is one of the few(read three) web sites I can be bothered to log into, I came over to have a read. And what did I find.....?

....yet another "load of bollix thread" containing annoying spouting from some folks. FFS , don't people have proper stuff to stress about? I must be the only one then .....
