If anyone has nothing to do on Sunday 14th, I am doing my 1st race meeting at Wigan, pop down to see an old man quivering in his boots.

There is normally some good racing on as well & if you get there early enough you will get in free :)

First Race, on the grid, everything shaking, green light, red mist, first corner.............hopefully not off! Unlike me on my first night rally. Well it wasn't exactly the first corner, but I was really fast until that point! Take it steady and gain the experience.

So whats the plan then, all form up outside the event, exhausts off and then a revving rumbling parade onto the site to psych out the opposition? PS don't forget the massive banners! :) oh ,this isn't a PM? doh!#-o

Just relax. Dry or wet is just as much fun....unless you dont have wets.....mwah ha ha ha ha :-)

Seriously though, if you are calm and collected you'll ride faster. If your bike is ready then spend 90% of your effort just chilling out. You cant ignore the nerves, that just comes with experience but it will pass. If you can slow down your breathing and relax (you'll know what I mean when sat in the holding area ready to join the track :-) ) you'll be helping yourself alot.

no, they are entry requirement only fit women we already have too many ugly ones, that you can take back as souvenirs of your visit and as for the pooftas. Well you know the rules of the Philosophy Department of Wallamaloo

Junction 25 M6. It is signposted from there. You end up going onto an industrial estate, looks as though you are going in the wrong direction, but it is right :)

Sorry I haven't posted, but I ended up at A & E yesterday, then stopped at Becky's last night & she hasn't got a PC.
1st off, many thanks to the people that came down to watch me make a prat of myself lol & secondly lots & lots of thanks to the people that gave me a hand after my off, you lot are absolute stars :)

Right, story of my 1st race day ever.

Went out for practice in the morning & thought the bike felt brilliant, I did about 6 laps & came in feeling very happy.
My lad went out for the 1st race of the meet & finished 3rd, I am so proud of him it is amazing, nice one Matty :)

Race 4 came up, so I lined up with 125's, 400's & anything else that fell into the up to 500 catagory in 12th position. My start was absolutely garbage & dropped back quite a bit. I had a dice with a lad on a VFR400 & eventually passed him coming into "Joeys". I pulled about 3 -4 seconds on him by the end of the race & finished in 12th. I was so pleased. i wasn't last & I did pass someone, so happy days.

Race 10, Formula 400 & mini twins.
I pulled out grid position number 3 & thought bugger that, so picked place 11. My start was slightly better, but got swallowed up by the 650's, there was a bit of a mess into the 1st corner with one lad ending up going wide & ending up on the grass, meant I had gained a place :) I was catching another rider, so tried a little too hard. As I came down the start finish, I had it in my mind I would outbrake him into the 1st corner. This was a big problem because while I was on the front brake my brain told me I was going in too quick, so I tipped into the corner with the brake still on. The bike said no & the next thing I know is I am on the floor at about 75 miles an hour heading for the barrier. The bike hit the tyre wall, then I hit the bike, still doing about 30 mph. I was winded, but my head told me to get up & get out of the way, so got up. The brilliant marshalls were there in a flash & luckily I crashed next to an Ambulance, so stumbled over to it.

They took me over to the clinic & checked me over in the Ambulance & told me that there were no broken bones, just soft tissue damage. I opened the door to the Ambulance to be met by Becky & a bunch of reprobates known from the .org, & Quiff with his camera, caught me with my pants down (Literally :)). Again, many thanks people, I really do class you as good friends :)

My lad had a trophy to collect, so I was going to wait & see him recieve it, but as the day went on I was finding it harder & harder to breath, so left & called at Leighton Hospital for a checkup.
They thought I may have punctured my lung because I was struggling to breath, but after ECG, Blood test & Xrays it turns out I have cracked 2 ribs. I will be honest & say that I am so lucky to come away from that virtually unscathed, I am now wondering if it may be a very short racing career lol. Becky has told me to do something less dangerous, like hangliding.

I still cant thank you lot enough, cheers people :) Quiff, be nice to see that pic :)

DaveP
15-06-09, 12:51 PM
Colin up untill that point i have to say this day was one of the best days i have had for a long time... It was brilliant to be part of it all and i envy you for having the balls to bet on the track in the first place!! From what i saw you were as good as many of them out there and could well hold your own against more experienced riders.. on bigger bike to boot.
Looking back there were a number of inicidents where riders seemed to push it a bit too much through out the day.... If you don't decide to call it a day then i for one cant wait for the next event.

Good to hear that there is nothing more serious than a few cracked ribs...I thought that ankle may well have been worse....

You sure know how to shift a tyre wall ;);)

:grouphug: for the .org rolling cannon ball!!! :p

Nice one col.

You could just make an end to braking mid whilst cranked over.

I bet you would have made it if you had lifted off the brakes.

Glad you came out of it unscathed.

At least you lived to tell the tale and have the option to fight another day.

The bike doesnt look too badly bashed up (apart from the rear wheel missing :-) ), have you had a chance to give it a good once over and check the damage out?

If I were you I would get back out as soon as you get the opportunity and then decide if its what you want to do. If you dont give it a try it will niggle at you forever.

mister c
15-06-09, 01:59 PM
Lent the rear wheel to a lad that was disqualified in the 1st race for using cut slicks (pillock). The bike actually started 1st prod of the button which amazed me. It doesn't look too bad, just cosmetics. When I feel a little better I will strip her down & have a proper nosey.

Damn, glad to hear you are OK Mister C, I can't imagine there are any racers that haven't slid down the tarmac though so I guess its part of it, just so long as you made it out OK. Wouldn't work like that on the road eh?

I like how rossi was saying the TT guys were mad considering what he does heh :)

Sorry I couldn't make it, I was laid up after exerting myself on a mountain on Saturday heh. Best of luck for the future!

My eldest son has a video, but it is the old tape type, so I am in the process of trying to digitize it & place it on youtube.
Many thanks for the GWS off everyone :). I have now decided that I am going to continue racing, much to Becky's disgust, so she has taken a back seat (again). She thinks that I should give up racing, but continue road riding so she can go pillion, I think. My argument was that I crashed a lot quicker on Sunday than I did last year & have less injuries, so it must be safer. I must admit that it seems to hurt a lot more, but i dont have the wonders of Morphine. I am hoping to be ok by the next round in July.

Thats the spirit.

Come and try Anglesey Colin. Much more room on the track, three sisters is a karting track after all.

Anglesey has been improved massively over the past few years, one of the major changes in the new layout was to include generous run off areas. You can certainly get away with mistakes more easily than at Wigan.

Only just got to this thread, shame about the cracked ribs Col, thought you'd got off blimmin' lightly with a swollen ankle! But not too major thankfully, we didn't half have our hearts in our mouths willing you to get back up after your off! You didn't reward us with a little jig at the time but I'll let you off considering the circumstances :-P

I do have some piccies, mostly similar to Quiff's but a few different angles. They'll be up in a wee while :-)

Some nice pics there Miss YC. The white Steelie pic looks mint, well impressed.

Dave, I didn't realise that I made such a mess of the tyres & I wondered where the rest of my fairing had gone lol. Spose I'd better get back to Wigan & pick it up & buy some filler & T-Cut :):):)

Few of the professional pics taken on the day.

Talking to a lad the other day who crashed in the same place on his 1st race there. He said that there is a nasty bump where the tarmac changes & if I would have let off the brakes, it would have probably gone round.
Wont be racing at the next meet, but the lad that is 2nd in the championship has said if I pop to see him early enough, he will walk round the circuit with me & give me some pointers :) Happy Days :)

...if I would have let off the brakes, it would have probably gone round.

That advice stands for 90% of crashes at the track in my experience. The concept I eventually got my head around, helped along by some of the content in Keith Codes' books, is that your tyres can only take a certain amount of load, call it $1 worth in total.

If you choose to spend 75c of that $1 in braking then you only have 25c left for cornering. You need to have your braking done before you turn in.

For each direction change you need to have a braking point, a turn-in point and an apex point firmly set in your mind. Doesnt really matter where they are provided that you have them, they can be adjusted as you learn the track. Without them you are using guess work.

Its a difficult thing to get straight in your mind but that really is the secret. The speed will come naturally.
