View Full Version : Broken Oven

Was cooking my Pizza tonight when the oven lost all electricery. So I switched it back on at the fuse box and all seemed well. All the lights & fans come on as usual but it doesn't heat up even though the red light saying it's heating up is on, and the electricity meter is hardly moving.
The grill still works :???:
So any ideas on fixing it?
cheers

Sounds like the main heating element has shorted. If it's a few years old I'd buy a new one.

Slide it out and you may find an overheat stat mounted on the top. Depress the red button and it may work - not all ovens have them accessible. Dont forget tp turn the power off before.

p.s. why dont you finish the pizza with the grill?

Probably the main heating element has blown, usually very easy to replace and would probably cost 20-30 quid

Heating elements will usually trip the circuit when they fail. Almost certainly the problem.

Loads of places online where you can get elements, make sure you have exactly the right make/model though, there are zillions of different designs.

Usually pretty straightforward to replace, just normal screwdrivers etc required. ISOLATE BEFORE GOING IN THERE!!!!

Nothing is pretty straightforward where Stu is involved ;)

+1 for element. Happened to our oven. I got Dad to fix it though so am unable to offer further advice.

Last one I had go, had a half a pigs leg in it at the time and friends coming round in an hour, 6 O'clock at night. Damm

Good thing is the little brother owns a domestic appliance shop. Could not help me with the correct element at such sort notice and wholesalers shut. So the git sold me an oven instead. Dinner was an hour late

Got the back off
Can see the leads going tothe top element for the grill which is fine and the leads going to the bottom element which doesn't work but can't see how to remove the element. :???:

I would assume you need to move some of the fluffy stuff out the way where those lower wires go and you will find a couple of screws there holding the element in place.

I know our Meile ones at work were like that anyway so i'd imagine this is much the same.

Oh and dont forget to leave it all plugged in while you do it and stand bearfoot in a puddle of water too. Touching the wires to your tongue as you go to make sure they stick in plae well is also a good idea of course. ;)

Did that & only saw the pointy end of screws so figured out you accessed it from inside the oven. So I've got it out now.

Confirmed with a multimeter that there's no electrical conductivity through it so just need to find where to get a replacement from.

Live on takeaways from now on :)

Build yourself an outdoor tandoor oven.

Only make food that requires frying or microwaving.

Eat salads only.

I'm sure i'll think of more in time mate

I recognise that element. I had to replace about three and eventually got rid of the oven. It had the brand name "Cookers" and was notoriously rubbish. The supplier in those days was Caremark. Probably changed their name because their web page is now closed. I also tried to get a similar element but it was smaller in diameter than all the others in my local (very well stocked) shop. They seem to react to corrosive oven cleaners.

Don't know if anybody has given you the link below but the elements all have dimensions on them so you might find an alternative in another brand. Try "Cookers".
