I just saw on BBC News that Man U have accepted an offer of £80m for Ronaldo
http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/teams/m/man_utd/8094720.stm
Does anyone else find this just a bit unsettling? I'm not usually one for sandel wearing earth humping, but isn't £80m, that's £80,000,000.00 btw, a little excessive for what's essentially a very well paid, well treated slave?
Something about it seems very wrong to me:confused:

Yes it seems excessive. So do the bonuses paid to the bank bosses that screwed the economy. But that is market forces, people pay what they perceive to be the value of the services they are buying.
£80m for a footballer is daft IMHO but it is not my money, so they can do what they like with it. I hope the government taxes these transfers in some way! :D

If I had sold something for £80m, you can be pretty damn sure I would spend a significant sum on a smart accountant to minimise my tax liability. Tax planning is not tax avoidance.......

I also find it stupid how clubs are throwing around that amount of money for a player, and the players get paid excessive amounts anyway, when doctors, teachers etc don't get nearly enough for the job they do and the benefits they bring us...
but, aslong as we all continue to support football, this will never change, :smt086

A football club is a business has been for many years. If a business puts a value on an assett at £80mil then they obviously believe he can earn them a lot more than that. As sponsorship/TV deals/Marketing and Ticket Sales all go up then so does the proffit, so it doesnt suprise me that this kind of money is talked about with players like Ronaldo cos he does make people watch people will buy the shirt and so on. Its no different to Becks going to Galaxy stupid money their but Galaxy made the fee back on increased income within 6months before Becks had even touched a ball.
well treated slave
A slave to the extent that everybody with a skill that signs a contract stipulating that they are limited in their scope to excercise that skill is a slave. Like a Formula 1 driver, a movie actor or a recording artist.
Yes it's a huge amount of money, but it's simply supply and demand. Real Madrid obviously feel there is nobody better at football in the whole world (and they could well be right, he's unquestionably top 3). When you have a skill developed to such an elite level, and the "industry" in which you perform is followed by billions of people world wide, and makes billions of pounds every year, then in my opinion you are well entitled to the benefits that go with it.
I just wish I was his agent.
Its stupid, £80million, but to them its prob small change, although i do wish id get paid theyre sort of money for occasionly running round a field maybe kicking a ball and falling over getting injured, going off sick for 6 months and still get paid more a week than a normal person would earn a year
Yes, added to the fact Real Madrid have also just bought Kaka for £56m.
Ronaldo and Kaka will prob be on £200,000 a week

But with the debts united have got, should the banks not be grabbing the money before Glazer gets his sticky mitts on it.
Beyond that football is a business, players are commodities, united made a profit on him so what is the problem

I don't like football, so I think all players should be on less anyway. This guy is not as good as hes supposed to be is he?Isn't he supposed to be a dummy throwing a*hole? or am I wrong? In which case its way over the top.

Depends on your point of view:
If your a man u fan then he's a genius, skillful more than most and knows how to play the rules to his advantage.
If your a suporter of a team playing man you then he is as you described above.lol
If your honest and a neautral then you have to say he's world class and it'll be a bloody shame if he leaves English football.

I'm a United fan, and yes he throws his dummy. And no, he is not even that good, he had a very purple season this season, plays when he only wants to play.
To rate him as a great player, you have to understand his style of football, his creativity, he can pull this off sometime, when he wants to. As a creative, attacking footballer, yes, up there with the best, along with Messi, Ronaldinho and Kaka, but IMO not better than any of them.
But, IMO, a great footballer all round is somebody like Steven Gerrard, David Beckham, Michael Ballack or Wayne Rooney. They do not only attack, they defend and do their bit for the team, never give up, they can also bang in a few cracking goals and do a great job of controlling a game. Ronaldo has always been a one man band that goes alone and says fook it you lot can defend this. Once or twice I have seen him chasing back this season. As with Dimatar Berbatov, he took the critisism like this, and in his first game he was given to improve, the man was all over the pitch as he knew his neck was on the line. Ronaldo on the other hand is arrogant/ignorant, whatever you wanna call him, he knows open arms will welcome him at great teams.
My Facebook status basically says, £80million, pah, he's not worth it.

Something (http://Something) about it seems very wrong to me:confused:
Yep, it sucks!
I dont know why people are so fussed over how much money footballers make. Its a huge business and up to them what they do with the money. Im sure anyone on that sort of money will do the right thing by donating some of it.
He isnt a slave because its his own choice.

Yes, I see what you mean. I don't pay attention to football at all. I seriously think that footballers should be paid less, as they would earn their money rather than having clubs pander to their 'queen' like way(interperate that as you may). I think if they had to work for their money then they would produce far better football, and it would be a far more gentlemanly game, as its supposed to be.
Still wouldn't watch it though;)
Cards on the table......... you might not know that I'm a Red Manc ;-)
My view is that he's made it clear that he wants to go. SAF can't spend every summer distracted by trying to persuade him to stay. £80m? Off you go, son. Good luck, thanks for all you've done and see you when we meet in Europe.
With regard to TW's view, Utd have debts but the banks are happy with the financing of these. The £80m is availabe for players if SAF wants it.
Frank Ribery will do for starters

Nothing you can do about it but I see it as a symptom of a very sick society. One that is showing every sign of destroying itself just like the Roman Empire did.
Never mind the Chinese will take over and sort it all out.

A shock return from Beckham would more than satisfy me
Rumour has it, he's off back to Real with all the dream boys. They're trying to bring a new revolution of Galactico's over there.
I hope the government taxes these transfers in some way! :D
They wont tax the 80m on its own, it will be offset by the clubs overall profit and loss at the end of the finacial year. but yes Man U are a very profitable club so their corporatian tax will be significant.

they want the transaction to be completed by the end of the month. My goodness he must be sh1te...can't wait to get rid!
Ronaldo might be one of only a couple of players to be paid £10m a year (plus sponsorship deals etc) but let's not forget that in the grand scheme of things in the world of entertainment that's not a massive sum. Hollywood actors frequently net well over $50m in a single year, and their careers can last far longer than a footballer's can. Obviously there aren't as many, but in terms of being paid big money for entertaining people it's exactly the same.
Footballers (much like actors) get paid only a fraction of what they generate. As long as people of the world continue to throw money at these things then the people involved will be paid well for doing them, and the best will be paid the most.
 @ those saying he's not very good. He's the worlds best player by far...
I hate him, hate his paddies, hate his looks, he's a greasy rich mummies boy who has a right stinking paddy when things don't go his way.
But there isn't anyone in the world better than him. End of.........
So what its £80 million. That moneys coming IN to our country, so whats the problem? Football is one of the worlds largest sports, and value goes up, so it was going to happen sooner or later..

yeah, and how much do Bankers get paid compared to footballers????
Who ****ed the country
Now take their wages and remove the tax...
Im not saying I agree, but think about how big football is, and compare it to other markets and sports around the world.... Cost of a track getting an F1 race for example, up around £10 million per race isn't it......... ONE race!!!
Also, gotta remember, they have to live life by the book. 2 games per week, training every day, can't go on holiday till off season etc... Its not all fun fun fun..
Anyway, footies lame compared to motorsport, rugby, jestkiing, and a whole host of other sports... But im not blind to how big football is as a business and entertainment.
And as said, how much does a film star make per year, or some of the BBC people... They don't give up 1/4 as much of their lifes for their jobs...

Yeah but it's a game, so I don't think it can be compared to real jobs (even if the bankers did feck up;)) and I feel the same about the money earned in other sports too and by all the celebrities in fact
And I wouldn't mind half as much if of the footballers had some manners....all that spitting and swearing and fighting on the pitch what sort of an example is that to kids?
Thank you Real Madrid. Now I won't have to watch the petulant, pouting, diving, cheating little **** any more!
Oh, and Messi is the best footballer in the world!:p

Indeed it is...at least in them sports they give proper entertainment when they crash, fall off, batter each other, slip slide and generally look like they injure themselves...until they give us a wave as if nothing happened:p
Unlike footballers who generally roll aroun on a pitch pretending their legs fell off, or claim someone fouled when there was no one there etc

The thing with it all is, if your own money isn't lining their pockets then you've no cause for complaint, and if it is you've no right to complain :)
Think movie stars get paid too much? Never pay to watch a film. Think football has too much money in it? Never pay to watch it or use any product which sponsors the game or its players. It's not like these things are all funded by our taxes and it's fairly easy to keep our own money away from things we disapprove of.
Don't buy a Ferrari if you think F1 is a bad thing, don't attend a race event or watch it on TV either. (The BBC only bought the rights because enough license fee payers wanted them to, if noone watches it it will soon be dropped). You could always decide not to pay the license fee, too.

I don't do any of those things anyway. Don't get me wrong I believe in free enterprise etc, but I still think what some people earn is obscene and if they had any conscience they would give a lot of it away to homeless people, disabled people and their carers, the elderly who have to chose between food and heating, and just keep what they need to live a luxury lifestyle instead of greedy lifestyle. To be honest I dont know how they sleep at night in their silk sheets, knowing that there are people starving and living in cardboard boxes. That's what I would do if I had disgustingly obscene amounts of money :smt083:cheers:

As clarified earlier, he's not. He's one of the worlds best attacking players.
If you watch into football a lot more than some people do, see what players actually do, he is wank. He does not work for the team, he works for himself.
People who view him as the best footballer in the world, are viewing that from a "general football aim" point of view, which is, 'Kick that round thing in the back of the net'. But I still see no reason for why he is the best in the world. Messi, does not dive, does not moan, does not wind people up, gets on with the game and shows real talent, he is a team player.
As clarified earlier, he's not. He's one of the worlds best attacking players.

All IMO of course
£80million has no bearing on how good a footballer Ronaldo is, it just shows how small-a penis the Real Madrid chairman has, as he has to hide behind his money and not fight for him for less.
As I said earlier if you read, his general match contribution is wank, his attacking may be second to none, but he is not a team player, he does not often work back, had a purple season this season as he seemed like he could not be arsed, he had a very stinky attitude the whole season. Look back to Champions league final...Two alleged masters were in that game and were going to give us a great game to watch, I saw three, none of them were wearing white shirts...Iniesta, Xavi & Messi.
As said earlier too, I'm a Man United fan, I cannot stress how good it would be to have him stay, as he brings a good attacking option and makes plenty of goals. However, lets see how United respond without him...Methinks a dominant Chelsea season is on the cards again.
