Best Camers to use at the races?

I'm looking on ebay for a half decent (not too expensive) camera to take some pics at the Donington GP etc but have no idea what i'm looking for?

Can anyone recommend a camera or tell me what I need to be looking for in the manufacturers specifications?

You want a DSLR with a decent lens I've been using a 70-300mm tele lens for a little while now, but cheap it wasnt...

My setup is a

Nikon D40 + Nikon VR 70-300mm lens.

Trouble is a Donnington you cant get that near the circuit because of the catch fencing etc etc hence why you need the zoom.

What your going to get depends on your budget really, but dont scrimp on the lens if you want decent results IMHO...

The question is a bt impossibe to answer unless you say what you are prepred to spend to the max. Give us a ball figure and you should get more suggestions.
While you can not beat the dslr for many reasons there are some decent superzoom compacts that can do a decent enough job .

A decent entry level DSLR will set you back in the region of £250.
I opted for a Sony alpha200 series, came with the standard 18-70mm lens, i also purchased a 70-300mm (£120) to give me the ability to get closer to the action.
The pic's below were taken from approx 20/30 metres away, but with the camera on the highest pixel setting it'll allow you to crop the image to a decent size and still keep the clarity.
I'm still in the process of learning what to do, so the entry level was the way forward for a muppet like me. :smt026

I did try using the basic kodak that i had (was about £70) and while the zoom and pic quality was ok, it was damn hard to actually capture the bikes in the pic and usually ended up taking pics of empty track! (am assuming this has something to do with shutter speed???)

not shutter speed as such, ut shutter lag (the time from pressing the button until the camera takes the shot), for that sort of money I'd be looking at one of the bridge cameras myself.

Have a look at Fuji's range of bridge cameras. They are brilliant for the money. I recently sold a S6500fd but if I hadn't inherited a DSLR, I would have kept it until it died.

I bought a casio EX-FX20 superzoom the other week from jessops on special, £190. It doesn't take the best quality pictures in the world, but the 20x optical zoom and the 40 frames per second at full resolution means its pretty good for catching some action
