View Full Version : Searching for a private plate!
Im after a private plate for my SV.
Been on the sites cant find the one im looking for!
Is there anyway of seaching the address of the owner, giving them a bell and offering to buy it off them?
Or just plain NO!?!
:)
If it's one in particular?
find out what vehicle it' on (say by listing it for sale on ebay by reg no.)
Then contact DVLA with some fraudlent reason that you need to contact the owner & pay the couple of quid
:D
Thats abit sneaky!
Theres not a more honest way? Or are these details just not given out to any old sod?
what is it you are looking for and why

Insurance goes up with a personal plate...
And the vehicle instantly becomes a target for kn0bs.
A1TAY or ALT4Y
To put on my SV, always fancied one!

However anything even similar to A1 TAY will prolly cost you well into 5+ figures :(
take it its personal to you and not the SV. Ive got personal plate on my sv that is personal to sv but I really dont see the point in personal plates
5 figures?
Eh? Honestly?
What a waste of buying something that will make it even more easy for the boys in bue to read you're reg.

Not true, mine hasnt.
I know what plate i want for my 675 :) , just waiting for my accident payout and then im gonna get it :)
I no they can be expensive especially A1 plates.
But my surname is unusual (ALTAY)
I just wanted to see if the person who owns a closely matched plate, would selll it, as its not on any sites!

I suppose so, as its got 'TAY' in, it will appeal to all the Taylors!
Do remember that despite being expensive, it is an investment and will sell for alot of money when/if the time comes.

(edit - link doesn't show the pic, I had put in SV53 SVS, enter this for an example)

Could always try ALT4Y,but remember it has to be on two lines for a motorbike
e.g. ALT
4Y
If you have it on as a single line you will more than likely get pulled for it
The ones available which im interested in are;
A17AYY
A17AYW
AA51TAY
and I plan to have it on one line!
Which one dya' reckon?
the last one could be a good bet as you will know its a private plate and means something to you but it wont shout out to everyone around, if that makes sense, unless thats what you want!
A1Tay is on a motorhome and it's currently insured.
It's a

Probably one of those private plate companies that buy them for £600 from the DVLA and then resell them for £8500!
Get A17AYY I'd say. :D

Then you are wasting your money.
Cops will nab you for your one-liner, then on finding out you are a bit of a chav once they match the plate to your surname, so will report to DVLA
After they do this a couple of times (and you are down £60) then the DVLA will take the registration back and you will be down the cost of the plate AND whatever it costs to get your bike re-registered on an "Q" plate which will have everyone that ever looks to buy it suspicious that it was put back together from a couple of crashed bikes.

+1 DO NOT PUT IT ON A SINGLE LINE----you are asking for trouble
As a footnote I have a personalised plate from one of my old trucks on my bike which is in the correct format and a legal size which has never been a problem to me.Problems arise when you chop and muck about with the lettering and layout.
If you can't get what you want is it seriously worth the trouble?

Just so you know, if your number plate has 5 characters or less, it's perfectly legal to have it on one line.

Ive been looking into private plates lately and funny enuf i saw a episode of 5th gear and they explained abit about them, all these company's selling 1000's of plates dont actually own them, they wait for you to buy then they purchase it of DVLA, i checked this out my self and its true but you end up paying more using another company, 5th gear advise was to always buy off DVLA select registrations.

I think a far cheaper option in these credit crunching times would be to change your surname to match your registration plate :D

that is true, if you are looking for a private plate use the dvla website as this is a list of all available plates whether new or surrendered.

£90 for an official deedpoll job, followed by a new driving licence and passport. Then you have to consider the postage (including return postage) for all those letters to banks, gas, electric, etc for the name change notification

MCE wanted to charge more for a private plate as they class the bike as a higher risk.

I don't understand the obsession with the private plates here -at least not to the degree that people seem to pay huge sums of money for some really lame jumble of numbers and letters that are more often than not a huge stretch at spelling out what they intended.
At home plates are owned by the gov't. If you want a personalized plate, then if the slogan is available, you pay a one-time fee of $100 (£56) and thereafter $40 (£22) annually to maintain the rights. If you let it lapse, the slogan becomes available to anyone else. The plates are also very different in appearance.
How do you get hold of a plate with less numbers and letters than what the DVLA are offering (7 characters)?

pay more lol
I had H10 OOV (spaced H 1000 V) on my Firestorm from new. My insurance wasn't any more expensive and I never got pulled for having it all on one line, even though it was illegal to do so at the time.
Nowadays I wouldn't bother putting a personal plate on a vehicle again, but quite like the one I bought my ex (Jane G) for our Rover 216 (now on her Skoda Labia)

And the vehicle instantly becomes a target for kn0bs.No it doesnt. I had a plate on my SV. Insurance never went up. You may have to pay an admin fee for new documents, but thats about it.
One thing to note. If you have a private plate on a bike and you transfer it off, no one can ever put another private plate on that bike and thats marked on the Log Book. Maybe not your problem, but something to take note.
