View Full Version : Swine flu - Should I ignore the risk?
One of my house mates is a teacher & she's on a weekend away with the little, smelly people. She got swabbed last night for swine flu along with the kids. She hasn't said why so I can only suspect that someone's got something.
She's back home tonight, & won't know if she's infected before she gets here.
Funnily enough, I don't want her to come home till *after* she gets the results from her swab & they don't appear to have any labour camps to send them to before they get the all-clear.
So poll's open, choose!
Its all a load of hype anyway......more people die from common flu every year than they do from swine flu.
On that note I have flu at the moment.
with the little, smelly people.
Are you allowed to say that about Mexicans? :smt102
Just avoid her. Catch it Kill it Bin it!

As G said. There are more people dying from Common Flu than Swine Flu. In the US for example 27 people have died from Swine Flu so far this year where as in the season last year 13,000 people died from normal Flu.
She sneaked home when I was at the shops.
Coughing coming from her room - I think she's turning into a zombie.

Tape her door shut with Biohazard tape ;)
The UK death was someone who had 'flu virus H1N1 (it's actually got nothing to do with pigs) as well as other more serious illnesses. She could have caught a common cold and died of that.
I'm not worried about it at the moment. I had "normal 'flu" a few years ago and that was awful - was off work for 2 weeks (and I'm no southern softie).
Get on with your lives and ignore it.

Well, let's see: Blonde, 30 yr old primary school teacher. The other one's also blonde but a 30 yr old LAS paramedic so she's probably better qualified to dispense the *correct* medicine!

I didnt say i'd administer any drugs, right or wrong ones. OK let the LAS girl do her bit and then i'll pop round when the other one is less infectious and also less able to resist me. I hear flu drigs make you hard of seeing so i'm well in :)

so, now that Dirk's the defacto expert on this, how do you tell the difference between a bad cold, mild ordinary flu and swine flu?
It's just that I've had a bit of a sore throat, snuffle and cough over the last few days..... only a bit, mind!

The lady on the phone (guess she didn't want to see anyone f2f just in case) said the symptoms to look out for were: fever, hot then cold flushes and aches. So, basically, the menopause. (I think I'm immune to that one!).
I'll sell you a tamiflu 75mg capsule. £10 a pop. ;o)

I'm not nearly old enough:shaking2: . So, as far as symptoms go, no difference from a bad cold or mild flu.
Thanks for the offer but I think I'll take my chances with the Lemsick! Or I could try oinkment.....

I do still feel it`s a load of hype but is quite worrying that we now have gone into an emergency state at work!
We have contingency plans drafted for a pandemic including mimimum staff working and all our patients have had to be categorised A, B and C and only the A category will get visits and potentially B. We have also been issued with face masks and had to attend a session on how to fit and wear them correctly! Hope the situation doesn`t get any worse

So... the people who actually NEED this kind of training... presumably they're not allowed anywhere near the patients..?
It made BBC London News last night:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/london/8104614.stm
I have been bunged up with a cold and headache since saturday. Flu like symptoms  I have never had a sick day at work yet, I'm not about to start now in my last 2 weeks. They wouldnt let me go home even if I wanted to anyway.

One of my daughters works the reception desk at the local A&E.
She tells me patient coughs/splutters over her and says "I think I may have contracted swine flu" she then gives them a mask from the pile by the desk and tells them to go outside and through the side entrance where a suitably protected member of staff will meet them.
so she is first in line to get it hospital acquired. not happy.
However, an interesting aspect I read the other day if it ever does become a big killer. It appears that doctors do not have death in service cover as part of their contracts of employment. I have and most people with a company pension will have etc. Therefore the BMA has murmured that some doctors may refuse to treat in a contagious and potentially lethal environment

seems a trifle inconsiderate if you axe me....

Nope, great idea, it's not worse than normal flu - just a sore throat, aches & wanting to vom on commuters.
Let the kiddies get immune to another infection early on before all the pensioners come down with flu at Christmas and hog all the tamiflu!!!!
For my part I went to that Apple store in Regent's street & coughed on a load of those fan boy types!
