I'm sure that when you go there, the nice people at Carcraft will guide you well.
:P
I prefer look of C-Max but after hearing the problems my Dads mate has had with his (ok its something like an automatic 7 speed) but its had loads of work done to it, even including a complete new wiring loom! sometimes it doesnt want to stop either.
C-Max = Awful
Golf Plus = Looks awful but has a good chassis.
Both is dependant on the engine options you have to be honest.

Not the 1.4 Plus version apparently lol, it will not move away from the kerb. Boss likes the idea of the 1.6 S FSI.

If its a company car are you gonig to be paying company car tax on it ?
IIRC it works on emissions, so choose the one that has the cleanest exhaust and keep your payments down.

The way it worked last time was that they bought and paid everything as it was a pool car, I just filled it up when I used it. Didn't get stung for it.

I'd go for the C-Max if it were me. Lots and lots of MPG, cheap to tax, low emissions.

Just make sure it really can be defined as a pool car.
"There is no tax charge for using a pool car. (A pool car is defined as one where private use is 'merely incidental' to business use, where it is not normally used by any single employee to the exclusion of others, and where it is not normally kept overnight at or near an employee's home.)" From the JustTax website http://www.just-tax.co.uk/guide_cc.htm
If HMRC or your company auditors check and find it's normally only driven by you, and you clock up more than the odd mile of personal use, or it's normally kept at your house overnight you will get a hit on your tax code.

50k for either car, bar-gin
I had a 2nd hand 04 Cmax with the 2.0 TDCI engine. As its based on the focus estate it went like crap off a spade and handled, however it broke a lot and cost a stupid amount to get fixed. After about 9 months I couldnt afford to keep fixing it.
Apart from that its a very nice drive and can still be fun.
On the other side a mate of mine also had a 04 1.8 petrol one and he had no probs at all. I must of had a devil car.

If it's new, then according to Parkers from April 2009 the Golf Plus is only available with 1.4 and 2.0 petrol engines, the 1.6 has been removed from the range.

But Yaris, Jazz and Prius occupy the top 5 so really it means nothing.

C-Max = Awful
what do you base this on?
But Yaris, Jazz and Prius occupy the top 5 so really it means nothing.
...and your point is?
It's a customer satisfaction survey, as in real owners and how happy they are with living with the cars, not some journo on a jolly comparing everything to a Lambo or Ferrari.
It says that people who have bought and run a Prius have been almost totally happy with the experience, if you don't like the Prius you won't buy one so it isn't relevant to you. People who bought a Freelander have had miserable experiences with them, for all sorts of reasons, similar vehicles might be a Honda CRV or a Toyota RAV4 for comparison. If you choose a Freelander, don't be surprised if you get grief.
If you want to compare a Golf and a C-max then it's a good guide as to what they're probably going to be like to live with, relatively speaking.

Golf Plus.
Quite a few different VAG group cars in the family, several VW, 2 Audi, 1 Seat and 1 Skoda and no reliability issues. My wife's Seat Ibiza hasn't missed a beat in six years of ownership.
I clocked up 135,000 trouble-free and very abused miles in my old Golf diesel company car in just under 3 years. I'm currently in an '08 Focus Style tdci and I'd take the Golf Plus every day

Are the 1.4 version not turbo and supercharged like some of the normal golfs (140 and 170 bhp versions) if so then they should go alright.
Can't you test drive and see which you prefer, I know later Fords seem to suffer frequent wear of suspension bushes but as you will not have to pay for repairs surely it's down to what you prefer to drive and like the feel/quality of more.

having just traded in a golf GT 2.0d i would recommend the Golf.
as long as its a turbo diesel and not a SDI model (hideously crap!) then i think you can't go wrong. tidy car, good power and built really well.
Not tried the c-max personally but based on my experience of Golfs, you will enjoy !
