Hi All,
I'm currently debating buying a silver X3 M Sport, this would be predominantly used by my wife but i would like to take it to work now and then. She currently has a Golf and i have a 320d M Sport. She likes mine a lot so we agreed (in principal) that a X3 would make sense for her as we both like it.
I have mentioned it to a few people who seem to "imply" that it's "stricly a girly car and a blokes car is the X5". I'm not keen on the X5, too big.
Is this most peoples opinion as i'm thinking of buying it within the next week ??
Thanks o'mighty org..

 yuck...
The question as to whether its girlie or not is secondary to the one of what on earth even made you begin to think of buying said vehicle in the first place....
I wouldnt, but then I wouldnt buy an X5 either, fricken pretend off roaders both of them.
I'd be inclined to take no notice of me though, if you and the missus like it then go for it, Also I'm currently driving about in a Ford Maverick so what I do know about vehicle asethetics !!!

Can't see what the issue is BMW's are great Cars. people say the same about the Z4 but i would definatly drive the M version of that.
As you already have a BMW you know what you get. A bloody good car whatever it is.
And as you say you are not using it all the time.
If you can by the 330D or 335d they are both seriously quick but good MPG.
Good shoping

if you like it then get it. I like the Fiat 500 which I'm sure some would consider girly. 1 thing, I don't get 4x4 'sport' versions, especially the RR HSE Sport, yuck.
X3 is a nice car and I don't think has a girly tag in particular although if you can get one with colour coded bumpers then they look much better imo

Yes, definately.
It's for girls who think an X5 is too big for them.

when i had the prang in the passatt last year they gave me a 4X4 subaru and the driving position was fantastic. i just didn't like the mpg or the interior.
I've had my fair share of cars in the past and BMW is the only make i've always liked and never complained about (found them better than the Mercedes i had after my first BMW)
buy her a new overfinch range rover you tight git!!!

I like BMW's in general I just dont like the X3 it doesnt look proportioned properly and I think its ugly. I dont like the 1 series BMW's either same reason, the shapes all wrong and it looks all squashed up at the back and dont get me started on the monstrosity that is the 3 series compact...
full sized 3 series, 5 series or my favourite the 6 series I really like though.
If you and the missus like it, then go for it...

There's no such thing as a car that's 'too big' for a man... Only girls say that ;)

Why buy an X5 when you can buy one of these:

Or at the very least, one of these:

Didn't the devil that is Clarkson and his team slam the X3? Some say, that would be reason enough to buy it and that anything he says is monkey plums! He made the comparison between the cost of an X3, and as someone else mentioned, a 330d (might have even been a 530d) Same price, but a WAAAAAY better car.
We use the X5's at work in 3.0l diesel guise. They are comfy, but vast in traffic. Very expensive to run, and in all honesty, I prefer the saloon cars. We also have 330 estates, which are really rapid cars!
As for being girly? I wouldn't say so. Butt ugly yes, but girly? Unless you're comparing it to

then no, it's not girly!

Yep, a certain mister Colin McRae was due to drive one before he bit the dust RIP.
While it has been said that you could get a 330d for the same price according to Clarkson this was based on the prices brand new.
You can now get way more car for the money second hand compairing the X3 to the 330d.
I never really liked the X3 but went with a friend to a car supermarket to check out all the 4x4s going as this was the type of vehicle she was after and I was surprised with the X3 and thought it was a nice car.
We narrowed it down to the X3 or Volvo XC90, although she really wanted a 7 seater so went for the XC90 (great car) instead.

I would imagine a Dakar Xwhatever bears minimal resemblance to a road going Xwhatever, in the same way I don't have the wherewithal to slap a new engine in my enduro overnight (not that that always happens etc but you see the point).
Well I'm a girl [ok, it's been many many years since I've been described as a "girl"!], and I wouldn't have either car ........even if I could afford it!

Much as the Z3 was a girls' car but the Z4 is more manly.
Girly or not girly aside, the petrol engined ones have pretty poor MPG and seeing as they are predicting fuel prices will skyrocket again I'd be more inclined to get the diesel or even better buy a normal car. Why buy a wannabe Chelsea Mobile?
i wouldnt touch a beemer with your's there the original cheesy rep car get yourself a jap car.

Or at the very least, one of these:

Oh good lord my eyes!! Why Pete why??
Gotta agree with the white rabbit...the dakar/rally raid vehicles are totally different to the pavement parkers. I don't like 'em at all. If you want a 4x4 then get a 4x4. Given the choice, the 330d gets my vote.

That's the point, though. If you're going to buy a crap X3, you're only doing half a job. Might as well go all the way and buy something utterly crap.

well, interesting mixture of replies, I think BMW is the one of the only car manufacturers that some people loathe with a passion.
Anyway, I test drove the car this morning and am picking up a X3 2.0d M Sport on Wednesday.
The wife is happy, its not super fast but then i'm not after that. It's very comfy, lovely to drive and the 3 kids can fit in with a ton of luggage easily. The MPG was good for the route i did, very twisty and i put my toe down and still got 37mpg over 8 miles.
so, replaced both cars in the last fortnight and hopefully won't have to do that for a fair few years :-)
hmmmm, KTM Duke next year :smt040

 does it really matter? I dont understand it when people class certain cars and bikes into male / female categories. They are just a piece of metal with wheels.
The BMW would only be a "girls car" if it was bright pink with pink seats and fluffy accessories. (I could go on about gender and categories etc etc but I wont bore you :D)
If you want it...buy it :D simple.

So you would have full respect for a guy who drove a Micra convertible?

Car is just a means of transport. :smt112

If that question is directed at me then yes I would. If we are determing whether someone deserves respect purely on the car they have then I dont judge people by the cars they drive - it is just a mode of transport.
I judge them by how they drive/ride. A male in a BMW could be a right arrogant tit yet the person in the micra might be very considerate of other road users.
In normal circumstances, I decided if people deserve my respect by the kind of person they are. Not the material posessions they have.
