I was going to cut the part I wanted out of the film, but when I tried to import it windows movie maker exploded* !!

Yeah, Windows Movie Maker does that sometimes, it's not the most...shall we say, stable piece of software. Consider getting Sony Vegas or Adobe Premier Pro
