View Full Version : Snatchy throttle at low revs.

just returned from a 2500 mile hack round france and have to admit i am slightly peeved with the snatchy pickup at low speed. (that is actually an understatement but this is U rated)

The thing has a power commander so will the TPS tweak work on it or is that wizardry by-passed by the afore mentioned magic box with pretty flashing lights? if so is it then merely a case of getting it set up by a professional?

thanks guys

Is it a pointy you have? I beleive the re-calibration of the TPS does work

First things first, check the chain condition, chain tension, the cleanliness of the chain and that it is lubricated.

nothing will get rid of the snatching completely.. yes the tps adjustment helps.

sprocket/belt condition and tension also help. but the biggest thing is throttle control, try to match your speed with throttle position (if that makes sense) try not to go into the 'slack' of the throttle.

i tend to 'drag' the back brake and keep a little power on at very low speeds this seems to do it for me.

yep, pointy. chain etc is spot on.

hear what you are saying about throttle position, tried it... using 1st instead of 2nd etc.

its just when you give it the tiniest of tiny squeezes to pick it up out of a low speed turn (round-abouts mostly) and it snaps your head back...

would getting it re-dynod for smoother power rather than all out spit flame on the over-run power help?

dump the power commander, that is unless you have a k&n and a full race zort and you are doing track days and want every last bit of horses out of your bike.

you could try a 16 tooth rear sprocket..

i found the sv really snatchy at first, the tps mod helped a lot, but never really eliminated it. its just something 'I' have adjusted to, i know when its going to happen so i either slip the clutch a little or drag the back brake..

one other thing is, when was the last time your throttle body's were balanced?

I found that balancing my Throttle Bodies eliminated the majority of this out of my K3 and made her behave again . I put her in dealer mode when this was happening and found that my TPS was actually spot on .

throttle bodies - no idea :stupid:

it does have k&n and i think zorsts.. i just have a sneaky feeling that bod who had it before me had it set up for top end, hence spitting flames on the over-run.

might go with my gut on this one.

If it's spitting flames on the over-run throughout ALL the rev range, it means he hasn't had it set-up properly, and he's just stuck a Power Commander on.
If it's splitting flames around 4-5k, than that's normal for a full race system on the SV.

As for the snatchy throttle, the simpliest thing to improve this is check your chain tention, not just once, but for the whole chain. Check for any parts of the chain that are stretched or tight. If you do have some tight and stretched areas, this is one of the biggest causes for major 'snatchyness' (aside from the standard bareable-snatch).

How much had you ridden the bike before going round France? It could be that over the miles you've done, the chain has become more stretched and worn.

Another thing to check is the smoothness of the throttle cable - does it feel sticky or smooth? if it's sticky, you might want to lubricate it as that could also produce a snatchy effect.

You can try the TPS mod, it should help if that is where the problem lies.

If it's neither of them, then just slip the clutch a little at speeds of 10mph and lower.

will check what revs it does it at and will double check the chain for tightspots..

It has always done it. its just that i rode it every day for 2 weeks and 2750 miles and by the end of it it was really beginning to grate.

thinking about it, it also has a habit of intermittent coughing when blipping off idle (new plu-igs etc dont stop it). which again kinda makes me think that it is fuelling related.

will try all of the above, and if no improvement i think i may get it dynoed and re set up.

thanks all

I know this may be a shot in the dark here.

BUT when we first got the Raptor it ran a bit crap, snatchy at around 3k, spat flames(on standard cans), popped, farted etc etc.

Im Indoors balanced the throttle jobbies, messed with this, messed with that, looked in dealer mode...and stuff. He really was convinced it was fuel related.

Replaced the battery, as simple as that, all the problems went.

Of course it still spits flames every now and again, but its a Raptor with straight through cans(now), but it doesn't do it at every opportunity anymore.

the flames i dont mind. apparently they look kinda cool.

did it ever just die on you? mine seems to do it when ridng 100m to the jnc with the main road. pull the clutch in and roll... motor stops...

think i will start with the less costly and work up from there...

Chain, TPS, throttle boddies, battery, Dyno, fireblade.

thanks for the tip.
