but.. lately .. most threads are descending in to chat that can be done via other chat media/rooms..

sometimes I read a title - think oo that is interesting and trawl through pages n pages of none relevant waffle stuff pertaining to
in jokes between parties quite often and the original issue of the thread is lost..



is this just my opinion??

what can be done to limit this ?

No, please DO bother. It annoys me (a lot) with idle banter being thrown in what is potentially a very good and helpful post for someone looking for advice. When idle banter creeps in to the thread, the thread is diluted for it's usefulness and thus the search function becomes less helpful as the searcher would end up having to read through mountains of drivel to find the information he/she is looking for. So as I said, if you (or anyone else) sees what is a potentially useful thread being degenerated into idle banter chat, please do let me know.

had i ever been guilty of doing this i too would apologise, but thankfully my conscience is clear.

yep, i can certainly see it as being tres annoying, and it has happened a bit occassionaly. but unless im mistaken i'd say on the "important" threads it doesnt happen too much, threads like "help i need a new pair of shoes for my cat" get help, threads that start "im drunk, what pizza topping should i order.." tend to get the silliness amongst the helpful messages

Sorry Quiff I didn't mean my comment to sound rude. It's just that someone (sorry can't remember who now, well I think I can but don't want to get it wrong, and it's too hot to search anymore) started a similar thread a little while ago and it became a horrible virtual slanging match and bar fight. It then lead to Fizzwheel asking for a full disection of the whole forum. And I thought every possible thing that could be said about derailing was said, and still there are no concrete answers.
Although I do think a few people have had a bit of a think and don't derail nearly as much as they used to. In fact I was saying to a fellow member just the other day how much better IB had become recently with some interesting discussions.
