have searched the old threads, and can't find anything more up to date than middle of last year (i'm sure there's more recent), so i shall ask my org dahlings what they have and what they recommend.

requirements are simples. i want to make calls, i want to send messages, and i'd like it to look good. innnernetz and email aren't important, but shant shy away...camera, again yes but hasnt got to be 10 million gigs or anything like that, i've got a camera thanks!

anyhoo. you know the drill....cheers in advance kids

Well Mr D, if you just want a phone, then you cant go wrong with the new Nokia 6303. Its the update to the 6300 which is a great phone. It looks good, does what it says on the tin. If you wanted a slightly more featured version, then the 6700 is similar in looks, just with a few more goodies.

I myself am waiting for the Ericsson W995 to come on to o2(through o2). Its a very featured phone and looks good.

It all comes down to if you have an allegence to a certian brand, or style of phone, but the 6303 or 6700 will porbably fit the bill.

It all comes down to operating system/user interface then - most phones will do what you are asking for.

If you like Nokias, an N96 would seem to be good.

Vixis has a Samsung that does the job quite well.

Are you wanting to use a specific network? That has some bearing because some phones are exclusive to some networks, so may be an idea to go down to your local networks shop and see what you like the look of, if you dont care who the network provider is, Carphone Warehouse will have all the possible phones.

Go in, look at whats there, when they ask if they can help, just say no and that you are just looking, make notes on the ones you like the look of then come home and research each one on the net - I think Carphone Warehouse online allows you to compare features on different phones side by side.

Then once you have a shortlist, ask on here for comments from anyone who has owned phone X.

That new Sony Ericcson cool. Y'hero would look stylish yet suave with that...

I can honestly say, after 5 months with mine, do not get a Blackberry, steer clear.

I can definitely Un-recommend the Samsung 3500 - very slow to do anything, clunky music player setup and it's a slippery little blighter too, I've dropped it a couple of times now, not enough to break it tho (unfortunately)

If you wanted flashyness I would say get whatever they are calling the HTC Hero (the latest Android/GoogleOS phone) but that doesn't match your requirements.

Go into a T-Mobile shop, pick them up, and get the one you like the colour of.

I'd just end up bringing you something over specc'd.

Good job you are not on 02 and making that request - I may have stitched you up with an iPhone :)

samsung sgh d900Then how about the samsung tocco ultra. The tocco was a pure touch screen, but the ultra has a normal keypad as well. A pretty groovy phone as you already have a samsung and are used to the operationg system etc.

my colleague, and i'll be honest he's my friend as well, i've known him since we used to play footy together 20 years ago, has the tocco. he's not over keen at moment but he's only had it a couple of weeks. see, he got all giddy and ordered the first one he liked the look of (he uses moisturizer) without doing the required home and foot work

Its the Tocco that Vixis has - she's had it a year, PM her and ask her opinon, she's generally happy with it, but did have a couple of complaints.

Just be advised that thee are two Toccos. One mexican the other is a phone and there are two of them as well (Touch screen only, and one with a normal keypad as well)

Edit, i have said that already

Ive got a D900i and i love it. Does everything i need, which is much like what you need Keith so why do you need to change/upgarde it?

I love mine mostly cos its so slim so even when i wear tight leathers it dont become a pain in the pocket.

i like my samsung, get a "free" upgrade every couple of years, so might as well. the screen is just starting to go a bit funny so would imagine its life is coming to an end in the not too distant.

Get the HTC Hero, sell it to me for £100 and keep your old one - I'll even give you my N95 as part of the deal :)

(its worth more than that on the open market really, just I cant afford more than that - in fact I would be pushing to afford the £100)

So upgrade to the flashiest blinger and ebay it as an "unwanted upgrade", then buy a less blingy one on pay as you go with the proceeds and pocket the change :)
