It sounds minor but is driving me up the wall. I've called NHS direct and they sid it could be up to 10hrs before they call me back as they are bust with the heat. My GP cant see me till monday so the combined wisdom of all meical personnel is required please.
I got water in my ear whilst swimming yesterday and it wont come out or go away. I'm about 80% deaf in that ear and no matter what i do to try and shift the water it wont go.
Things ive tried.
Standing on one foot and hoping up and down - my usual "cure" - nothing.
Tissues carefully pushed in to try mop it up - nothing
Pulling/pushing/streching ear - nothing
Sleeping on that side all night - nothing.
Please, please help me if you have any other usefull ideas or suggestions.
And no, i'm not doing a Van Gough before anyone suggests that.

did you dive in or go to the bottom of the pool at the deep end?
the reason i ask is my mate went to the bottom at th edeep end of a pool last week and has damaged the outer part of the eardrum.
don't poke anything into your ear even tissue as it could cause further damage.

Assuming I do come to Soho tonight...I'll have my Sodium Bicarbonate ear-drops with me (dangerously, in the same size bottle as the Silicon drops I carry for un-siezing locks).
I constantly struggle with blocked ears, swollen ear canals, and ear infections....you kind of get used to it after a while.

OK sucked a mint all the way to the chemist - nothing.
Asked chemist for advice and was told to just wait it out  which i guess is better than being sold a bottle of something and told it'll fix it but it costs £10 and find it does nothing.
i honestly cant see how putting more liquid in my ear will help th water trapped in there to come out but i'm gonna go jump in the shower now and see if more water gently allowed in might convince the other water to come out and play.

you tried warm water from a syringe?
Aint got a syringe and tbh i'd be worried i'd do myself some damge or make it worse. tried dripping water in it from my fingers and using a wet finger to creat a little suction in there.... but nothing :(
Oh medical advice. Get a new ear plug. Squeeze it really tight and slowly insert it into your ear until it starts getting painful.
tried that yesterday at the trackday. Seemed logical and easy .... and it didnt work :(
top tip...never take medical advice from a doctor that put a ball bearing in his ear :-)
Now i'm not sure i wanna know how or why there was a ball bearing in there, lol. But i'll top that by saing i had the hard cristy bit of popcorn in my ear once many years ago. It only came out after i woke up to find some nice almost black blood had oozed out my ear and stuck my face to my pilliow.
Both my eardrums are perforated from years of raving but they work fine so not too fussed but this one deaf ear scenario is driving me nuts.
i'm no medical expert. but i think you have dislodged some ear wax further down into your ear. as said sodium bicarbonate ear drops should shift it.

Tried the hand cupping thing mte - nothing.
Just had a shower and tried it under the running water too - nothing.
Also tried filling ear with as much water as possible by dripping it off my finger while head was tilted over - nothing.
So tried filing it again and then placing a bit of tissue in there with it in the hope that as it absorbs the water it will alos pull that oter water with it...relying on the properties of water tension now... and sitting here typing with a wad of tissue sticking out my ear

Try not to put anything into your ear, it sounds like you have a perforated eardrum as you are unable to regulate the airspace in your ear and the water has possibly gone into the inner ear.
Doctor! Doctor! Doctor! is all I can say, if it's really making you that stressed you could try local A&E but remember its Friday (fight night) and it will be heaving.
Do not try putting anything else in until he has used the auroscope and determine whether the eardrum is intact, you may exacerbate the problem.
Hope you are better soon x, its really unpleasant but try to bear with it until you know for sure.

Perforated eardrums heal!
Although once you have ruptured them once and they heal, the are weaker than normal and it can recur more easily.

Spidey, it may reassure you to know that if you dropped a tarantula and its abdomen was to split (the big round part of the spider) you could use superglue and flour to repair it, thus saving its life. hey Spidey. My guaranteed way of getting water out of my ear is to kneel next to the bed, put a towel down, then properly headbutt the bed with the side of my head which has the waterlogged ear. 3 whacks and it is always out, don't be afraid of doing it hard, it doesn't hurt. If this doesn't solve the deafness then I suggest you have fluid in your inner ear. I get this quite often, everything is muffled yet the ear is clean and water free. Turns out it is my eustacean tube not draining my ear enough, it happens when I am drunk or bunged up. Eat some decongestant and wait a day or two and then it clears up, drains, and you can hear again. Hope this helps.
Hows your ear this morning spidey.
Have you tried drying your ear with a hair dryer on a low setting.
I SAID HAVE YOU TRIED DRYING YOUR EAR WITH A HAIR DRYER.

Thanks everyone for all you advice. Ear is still as bad as it was :(
NHS direct finally called me back...at 3.45 this morning. Went thru a few questions and tbh the advice i've been getting on here was far more helpfull than anything they said cos after asking me a million question they cme back with this.... "well it sounds like you got water in your ear from swimming and it wont come out." no shi* sherlock  "We suggest you wait a few days, maybe a week and then see your GP if its still a problem" Greeeeat. So they told me what i knew already and told them. Thanks a bunch.

Well to re-iterate what I said last night, don't use those spray things that dissolve ear wax (I suspect you have some kind of gung formed of water+ear wax blocking everything up) because they'll only end up burning the skin. Have you tried warm olive oil? It could be something behind the ear-drum, you might have an infection...have you any pain at all?
Go see the doctor as soon as you can...for all you know, it might be another bit of popcorn

I already spoke to you on Friday but do try avoid A&E and just call your GP up tomorrow and get seen that day. Doctors surgerys generally keep morning appointments free for emergencies. My doctors accept calls for on-the-day-emergency appointments from 8am onwards. Maybe your local GP surgey will open that early?
Hopefully they'l be able to solve whatever it is..! It could be an ear infection so a course of antibiotics and ear-spray will do the trick.

Update for thos that wanted it :)
Went to the Docs this afternoon and he had a quick look. Turns out its wax. Phew, glads he didnt say ny brain was tryiong to escape and got caught in the narrow tubes or something at least.
However he wouldnt risk syringing it as i've had perforated ear drums before and he'd rather be safe than sorry so made an ENT referral for me...which could take up to 3 weeks!!! FFS dealing with this for a few days has been bad enough, now i may have to wait another 3 weeks :(
He also told me to stop using thr Sodium Bicarbonate drops ive been trying (thank you Shop Addict for that advice) even tho it was clearing it up for the same reasons as he wouldnt syringe it, could get thru the perforations and cause more problems in my inner ear etc.
might just keep using them tho, not sure. If i can use the drops and clear it up i'm saving NHS waitning list time etc is the good positve thinking bahind this, however do i wanna risk causing more problems for myself??? Hmmm.

Can't he just pull it out? Same happened to my brother in Belgium. Bless their lack of health and safety, they doctor just got some tweezers and the ear scope thing and pulled the lump of wax out. My brother yelped but then suddenly he could hear, and we were all looking at this crescent moon-shaped piece of solid wax.

He said he'd rather leave it to the ENT specialist who will do just that by the sounds of it, cos the wont flush it out but will "suck" it out he said. She better be nice looking this ENT person, not letting a minger put her tongue in my ear. I have standards you know

Aw but those poor automated systems need some love too dont they. Did you know the supercomputer that played against chess masters, when ht was retired it went on to be the booking system for some major airline. Now thats no way to end a gliitering career is it? Anything we can do to help them feel better is a good thing surley. Likewise. Seriously, the only safe method if you've got a possible perforated drum is dry wax removal with a curette wielded by someone who knows what they're doing, eg, nurse, doctor, maybe audiologist. Foreign fluid into inner ear =not good.:smt018
