View Full Version : Bike stalling in the rain
Before you all shout "USE THE SEARCH", I had a look but couldn't find anyone with the same problem!
So today I hopped out on the bike at lunch to do some shopping, got caught in a little downpour. The bike engine ended up cutting out whenever it idled at traffic lights. I ended up having to hold the throttle open to stop this from happening.
I'm aware of the spark plug + rain issue, but I'm wondering if this is the same issue as I didn't seem to lose power to the engine when riding, it just didn't want to know when the revs went down.
I'm not particularly mechanically minded so I may be entirely wrong but I was hoping someone might help point me in the right direction.
It's a naked K3 SV650.
A Fender Extender has been ordered =p

sounds like water in the plug to me tbh. It could be water getting to oe of the block connectors under the tank too but i'd start with the front plug and rule that out first.

Get some silicone grease from Maplins as well.

Do you have a Fenda Extender fitted to the front Mudguard ? , the front plug should also have a rubber flap covering it and a grommet to slide into the top of the cylinder once the lead is fitted onto the Spark Plug .
Thnx chaps, there's a maplins just down the road so i'll pop round and get some silicon goop tomorrow evening, hopefully that should sort it.

You sure it isn't too low idle speed set? On my old ER5 I had to hold the throttle open when I stopped in the snow or else it would die.

+ 1 when its dry start it up, let it get up to normal operating temp, check the idle speed, some one may of fiddled with the idle screw when you were parked up, idle should be 1300 - 1500 rpm, i use 1500 rpm, to stop it stalling when cold.

Idle speed is one of the first places to look at for sure . My Idle sometimes needs adjusting twice a year , once when it gets really cold and back down a little when it gets really hot .
Regularly it's idling at about 1400. Had a quick look at the bike and at first glance I can't see the spark plug, is it hidden away behind the radiator? Anyone got a pic?

Yea, the front spark plug is hidden behind the rad - you should be able to see the lead connected to it, follow that in :)
as for the idle speed, thats a fine speed...i think the idle speed should be between 1300 and 1500 rpm
If I remember correctly:
- undo the horn/loosen the bottom rad bolt (might be different on a naked pointy),
- loosen the two top bolts,
- swing rad forward,
Yes, it's a PITA, but you'll get used to it ;)
This time of the year idling can be set around 1300, increase it to roughly 1500 when the temperature drops down (winter).

I've had the front cyclinder cut out once due to torrential rain, but the rear kept firing, so its odd that both suddenly stop, usually the rear is still strong enough to keep the engine going albeit rather lumpy!
I got some of that silicon goop put on this afternoon, hoping it works! One thing I wondered was what the OTHER thing going into the top of the cylinder just north of the spark plug was? Is it fuel? 'scuse my ignorance :P
