So, after feeling a bit bored at not having a hobby (asides from the usual gym / reading / walking) which involves me getting out the house I decided Id give rollerblading a try. No idea why I chose it, I just think it looks pretty fun (although there is potential to look like a complete loser ). So im off to buy some roller-skates after work
Anyone else taken up a hobby recently? (no matter how unusual or boring it sounds).
Maria
Decided to take up millinery and seems I'm quite good at it!
always fancy rollerblading - too many hills round here though

Lesson #1 - Rollerblades =/= Rollerskates
But cool anyway, used to rollerblade a lot when I was younger, prepare to lose a bit of skin if you practice on blacktop;)

Was at the Wireless festival at Hyde Park this weekend and was amazed by the shear amount of people on rollerblades/skates. Thought skating was long gone.
Great hobby though and way more fun than jogging.

Reckon it would be a bit extreme to go rollerblading in full bike kit? :p Although it would be rather hilarious to see peoples faces

I was a climber, mountain biker, hill walker, ice climber, mountaineer, back packer, cycle tourist, caver, and free lance activity instructor when not working in the climbing wall. Wore my self out with worn out knees, fingers, back, feet and brain from having to say " Awesome, Dude!" all of the damn time... :smt048
Got into Eskrima (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qH309YwzxsY) a few weeks ago with my friend Ruth. She is a great teacher and very fast, so poor broken me gets hit a lot then has to stop because something else broke! :laughat:

I have lots of hobbies, none of which are new....
One of my favourite ones is scuba diving, which I am hoping to be doing on holiday as of tomorrow!
I used to go rollerblading in Hyde Park every weekend when I lived in London.
Definately get yourself a decent pair of skates though or you will be in for a terrible time. Mine are Salomon, bought them for £198, many years ago and worth every penny.
If you intend on just skating around rather than doing trick skating, you will need good bearings and a longer wheel base, good ankle support and a comfortable boot.
I always take my own rollerblades on holiday where I know there are skating areas, I rented a pair once and it was hell!!
i started and stopped roller blading when connor was a toddler. Used to go to toddler group pushing him in the buggy while I skated. Only problem I had was stopping. Connor had to wear a blanket while in buggy and I would shout hide and he would pull his legs up and hide head under blanket as I ploughed the buggy into the nearest hedge/bush/car to stop.
next summer Ill be getting a bike seat for libby and start cycling
today I went to body combat class which reminds me of when I did muay thai, might have to find a class down here.

i used to "blade" lol, then BMX'ing and finally skateboarding which stuck for a few years........ im just totally rad, my awesomeness out ways my radness tho
I've been thinking about new new hobby or riving my past ones with my 8 week holiday coming up
Ok well this is going to sound really boring but I'm seriously thinking of taking up jewelry making. Just simple stuff, glass beads and stuff, then maybe take a course in silverwork, but it's something I've always wanted to do. Keep my fingers busy in the winter.

Ta for the tip, I bought some Soverign (sp?!) skates. All the rollerblades were too manly and chunky for my liking (not me mention extremely expensive). And the only decent blades were pink
So I opted for plain black skates instead - will be testing them properly when I got home from work tonight :jocolor:

Once I finish the groundworks (need to build a low retaining wall), I will be hopefully getting started on growing lots of fruit and veg. Already made a start on the fruit, with a plum & a cherry tree planted, along with blackberries, gooseberries, blueberries & rhubarb. More to follow, and should save loads off the food build & get me a bit fitter with lots of digging. :)

Climbing... though I havnt been doing as much as id like to recently because of work! Grrrr
I had the opposite, I ran a climbing wall, taught climbing, worked freelance on days off teaching climbing and when I was not working... I went on climbing holidays.
Sport climbing in Sardinia was one of the best trips I ever went on. :crutches:
If you get the chance, there are some amazing places in this country well worth checking out. The Peak district, Tremadog when Snowdonia is rained out, Baggy Point and of course if you are just passing through, Bristol has a multi pitch inner city crag called Avon Gorge. :D

Rollerblading/skating's great fun, hope you enjoy it! :D
I've been doing a spot of off road riding recently, which is a mixed experience. Although fun, it's a bit frustrating being quite so crap at something again, and also hurts when you fall off - especially when it involves a face plant into a gorse bush!
From this i have learned that if you're going to be crap at something new, choose something where you can hide at the back of the class, and not a hobby where you have to enlist the help of several others to come back and help retrieve your bike from aforementioned bush...
Having more success (and fewer bruises) with yoga and pilates - you're already on the floor AND they have mats :thumright:

High Wycombe sports centre hosts Rollermania every Friday. My daughter had a go a couple of years ago and we got her some blades when she liked it. My wife got bored stood watching her have all the fun so got some blades too. And not to be outdone I got some skates soon after. Two hours most Friday evenings being shown up by a bunch of spotty herberts who literally skate rings round me. Good exercise though. See if you have something similar in your area as it's a flat smooth surface (sports hall) rather than tarmac or concrete and a good way to learn before heading off to wobble round Hyde Park. Oh, and buy some wrist guards - falling over can easily break your wrist, as sister-in-law found out the hard way. Enjoy!!

I got some of those :D then decided I might as well go the whole hog and bought some elbow and knee guards too (something I'll need in the beginning at least).
Hoping the weather stays dry so I can go skate tonight after work!
I got back into riding my BMX, just to work and short journeys nothing fancy.
Rock climbing. Am still getting into it really, don't have any of the grippy shoes/ropes/chalk bags yet.
It's fun and helps with my mild vertigo. Your hands don't half start getting slippy after about an hour though... Might buy some chalk for my own safety... aswell as those beneath me. :D

Ive been thinking of getting back into Aikido a lot recently.
This man (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bu7aauJuQHY) was my inspiration to start it. The clip is grainy, black and white and the music really needs sorting out but please watch it and see the true skills he once had...before the hollywood parties made him fat and slow. You can see some of his trademark moves that made it in to his movies if you were ever interested in his movies that is.
Got too many hobbies (mostly outdoor orientated) and not enough time to practice most of them, next one too ad to the list will be clay pidgeon shooting. Need to start saveing (again).
Ok well this is going to sound really boring but I'm seriously thinking of taking up jewelry making.
Not boring at all! If you need any pointers let me know... a friend of mine is a jewellery maker.
For me - I've always fancied the idea of taking up fencing.
The musketeer type, not something I'll need a tin of Ronseal for.

You're not gonna believe this but i did fencing at school (yes it was a posh school) and got my awards for Foil and Sabre.
Lunge, aprre and respot n all that. I'll have to show you my movs one day at Soho. You so wont be impressed tho, lol.
Home brew, after jans's thread on here. As I type this I am supping some of my home cider. It'a a bit rough but it does the business mega quick, it's very potent, I reckon 7% or so. I have some pinot noir nearly finished fermenting too cos wifey likes it. Then Bluepete posted up about his beer making so I thought I'd invest in the kit and a tin of malt stuff. The utility room is smelling great:p I shall quit law before long - it doesn't pay - and start a micro brewery:p Even if that doesn't pay I'd just sample the product all day long:smt041

You and your man just dont come to soho enough my love. There has been one occasion i had to use them on some drunk who was about to knock all our bikes over. Ok so i ended up falling on my butt in front of everyone as i slipped on the dropped kerb bit outside Neros  but i did make sure he didnt fall drunkenly on the bikes.
And who do you think it was who chased down and caught the dude who did knock our bikes over and do a runner? Only your friendly neighbourhood wall crawler :)

Hmmm.... I know someone who's into medieval re-enactments. He's got a few things hanging on his wall that would make great warden deterrents.
Unfortunately, I think you'd be arrested if they found you riding along Frith Street dressed in chainmail with a hand-and-a-half strapped across your back.

Fencing swords, especially the Foil, are very light and very very slim. The foil is used more for piercing than anythign else, the sabre is a slashing tool.
