An e-mail arrived today offering a tax refund oh joy:smt023 All I have to do is fill out this form with my bank details and money will be placed into my account (as if). HMRC say that lots of these are floating round at the moment and so I have sent it to the investigation unit:plod:
If these people worked as hard at something legit as they do at these things they would be successful anyway so why try this stuff?

Its not hard work and you are frankly wasting your time reporting it.
It will come from a compromised home PC that has a mail server installed on it through a virus and as such is untraceable back to the perpetrator of the act.
Just delete and move on.

How is it untraceable? Surely the compromised details must be returned to the perpetrator somehow?

You've never tried your hand at tracking an IP address internationally, have you...

No, but I reckon every time a scam is mailed out, drop a 500lb bomb on a Nigerian internet cafe. If you don't get the scammer who sent the mail, you will get some other one...
I quite like the scam-baiting site, I think it is 419eater or something like that.

Ahh but they were probably also using HollywoodOS...
Its simple to find out which country an IP address comes from, its even simple to find out which ISP in that country has that address.
After that its a stone-wall, the best you can hope for is that they send the spammer an email asking them to stop.
I once did these traces as part of my job.

Because there are lots of stupid people about.
lots and lots and lots and lots. Some of them are suprisingly quite intelligent people till greed gets the better of them too.
Scam mails cover something like 70% of the worlds emails PER DAY.
I know our entire mother company where our spam filters are gets over 1 million junk/spam/scam emails per day that are filtered out.... Just our company......
I'd be a scammer if I knew how. scr3w it, its easy money for others stupitty
Well if every other buggers getting away with it and living in mansions in America and such, why can't I :(
Morals, im stupid for having so many :(

Why do all the banks etc. request that phishing e-mails are forwarded on to them? Is it just a PR exercise? I always forward them on in the hope that one of these plonkers will get nobbled for it.
Oh, and I too was told about my £188 tax refund. I almost fell for it as I only skim-read the e-mail whilst I was in the middle of something else. Boo hiss - I could have done with a couple of hundred quiddlies.

Damn you. You have all the luck.
Talking of span and stuff, we use message labs as our spam filter, they hardly ever get through.
Our firewall gets hit like 50,000 times a week by port sniffers etc.
I didn't realise until the other day that Abbey have moved their security department to Russia, and I now need to send all my details to somewhere near Vladivostok. I guess it keeps costs down.
(No I don't have an Abbey account and no I didn't send anything.........)

Allow me to refer you to my post above yours. The name Speedplay also came up on our random name generator, so you could be due 3.27 Ugandan dollars. We dont have the .27 at the moment but we may send you a voucher instead. You can use this voucher at any Woolworths store.

Is that the same computer that lets you zoom into any pic as much as you like and then simply use the "enhance" button to make it all clear and sharp again so you can see who the bad guy is?

Not to derail this thread too much, but on the subject of Hollywood computers.....

Saw a belter on 419baiter, generic scammer, IP address from Ghana, the scam claimed to be from Nigeria.
"I know what will look nice and legit... the Ghana seems a bit dodgy, so we'll claim to be from Nigeria!"
