Swine Flu... okay, does anyone reckon they've got this?

I'm a bit under the weather, and just put it down to a summer cold picked up over the weekend. I was sent home from work on Monday and told not to come back until all the symptoms had cleared.

Now, I think I might actually have it... from what I understand, confirmed cases have been little more than mild cold symptoms - which describes what I've got pretty well.

2 members of my team have been diagnosed in the last week, and I'm not allowed back into work until I've spoke to my GP tomorrow morning. Quite likely I have it. Feel a bit rough, but otherwise ok - don't see what all the fuss is about :P

I'm feeling abit rough, too..... sore throat and bunged up, runny nose, sneezing a lot......

Not rough enough for a day off work. Besides, if I go in I can sneeze all over the stupid woman who turned up for work whilst still being treated for pneumonia :toss:

Mate I spent alot of time with at T in the Park had to be sent home, quite likely he has it, possible alot of people who spent time with him have it.
Ach well, I am still ill from the weekend, see if it clears up, then go and see if I turn into bacon :)

Just take paracetemol regularly and should be fine.

Yeah, this is supporting me at the moment. Felt the crash at 3pm today when it wore off.

Aren't they having pig parties now? So that the kids can get it before September?

Well I am rough as a bears ****

Headache, struggling to breath as defective nose is blocked with green gunge, cough, shivers, temperature, worse part is the lethargy, it is hard work getting off the bed, I am wiped out.

Might just go into the office to infect everyone else, but had a memo that says Two or more symptoms and you stay at home

Well my GP thinks I've got it, but that's only an over the phone diagnosis.

I only have three symptoms - headaches, burning aching limbs and poos - and don't have any of the cold like ones of runny nose and sore throat. He said that's fairly common.

This is the 3rd day and am definately beginning to show show signs of getting better

I've been taking some of this:

Seriously though... I'm waiting to chat to the Doctor, and like you Sally, I reckon I'll get the over-the-phone positive diagnosis. I'll be asked to get a "Flu Buddy" to go and pick up some Tamiflu for me, and told to stay confined until all symptoms have abated.

I really hope you dont have it guys :(

But how the hell can they diagnose piggyflu over the phone when it sounds just like normal flu cos you apparently have the same symptoms? That baffles me

Anyway stay off the bacon you lot, it might just make things worse ;)

Hiope you feel better soon Bill.

Dunno if this helps, as I was similalry confused about what's real oinkyness and what's just feeling under the weather. Couple of people at work have had it - and at the point where they were still swabbing for a diagnosis, so positive confirmations.

The overriding symptom they both reported was a high temperature that comes on quickly.

One of them came back to work wihin a week. The other one has underlying health issues, so was hospitalised for a few days, then sent home. She expects to be back in the office next week.

from what I understand, confirmed cases have been little more than mild cold symptoms

Hmm... the impression I have is that it's the opposite.

From an NHS website:

The symptoms of swine flu are broadly the same as those of ordinary flu, but may be more severe and cause more serious complications.

The typical symptoms are:

sudden fever, and
sudden cough.

Other symptoms may include:

headache,
tiredness,
chills,
aching muscles,
limb or joint pain,
diarrhoea or stomach upset,
sore throat,
runny nose,
sneezing, and
loss of appetite.

Most people who have contracted swine flu recover within a week and do not suffer complications, even without being given antiviral medication.

However, experts point out that as this is a new virus, its behaviour cannot be predicted with certainty.

Swine flu is different from seasonal flu in that most serious illnesses have been in younger age groups, as happened in all three 20th-century influenza pandemics.

A doctor faced with a symptomatic patient cannot yet predict with certainty the course of their illness and whether or not they will be in the small proportion who may become more seriously ill.

This is why antiviral medication is still being given to all those with swine flu in the UK, subject to their doctor’s discretion.

There's an NHS "symptom checker" here. http://www.nhsdirect.nhs.uk/Sat/Topics/WizardStepOne.aspx?Host=Nhsd&SyndicationPartnerGuid=d19370ea-a100-407d-9695-b73407f701c7&TopicGuid=8c903315-a302-412a-bfae-9cb576d4b4cd

Perhaps a quiz you don't want to score high marks for?

Wishing you better Bill! Have lots of this: :smt015 (even if it is something you don't like doing). x

The typical symptoms are:

sudden fever, and No way of knowing for sure, but past couple of nights have seen definite fevers

sudden cough. Yes

Other symptoms may include:

headache, Yes, a bit - abated with paracetamol

tiredness, Yup...

chills, No

aching muscles, Yes, but would rather put this down to other reasons

limb or joint pain, No

diarrhoea or stomach upset, No... well yes, but again - other reasons

sore throat, Yup

runny nose, Yup again

sneezing, and Oh yes...

loss of appetite. Not really... I'd be really ill then! ;)

Hmm well, I think I'm mild, but then again Flu has never affected me very badly. The specific line I've had from work is that the symptoms above, and how badly they're felt is very circumstantial.

Does constant eating indicate swine flu?

Or just that I'm a greedy pig?

I felt well groggy yesterday- really lethargic and very cloudy head, finishing up with a headache halfway through (acoustic) band practice. Couple of paracetamol and a couple of cans of beer last night and I'm feeling far better today!

Yes they diadnose over the phone. GP told me that they'd rather do this than have people coming in to the surgery and spreading the virus. He also knows me quite well and we discussed the possibility of Tamiflu and agreed it was not necessary.
Feel a little better today even though temperature is still high.Legs are beginning to feel like my own again and working

Agghh it's closing in, and is not only in the org but also on my floor at work as well! :pig:

Now normally i wouldn't be that bothered, but i'm going on hols on Friday and don't want it spoiling my sunshine. Also it's a global get together, so chances are I'd be responsible for worldwide chaos if i take it there.

So far my plan to avoid disease-ridden public transport have been foiled by more bike electrickery problems, however I have already sent two people in my team home at the first sign of a sniffle, and am not going near my best friend at work as she's looking a bit dodge.

Batten down the hatches!!

PS. GWS Billy & others!

Time to start wearing on of those oh-so-sexy little masks i think Fizzy. And carry a long stick to push the infected away with.

Not sure what creepy mask fantasies you're having over there, but I'm going to play safe and go with the cattle-prod idea instead... ;)

I have the tamiflu jab every winter as I'm asthmatic, does this mean I'm more protected (as indeed I am supposedly with any flu?)
