Holy f**k!

Where was that? Not the UK clearly.

Asleep at the wheel? Doesn't look like the driver would have lived to tell the story.

Incredible footage! Hope everyone was ok, though that's probably wishful thinking considering the carnage... :(

My money would be on a tyre blowout causing the swerve

Scary stuff:eek:

the van that is the first to get hit so nearly makes a fantastic recovery, then loses it. Still he was one of the lucky ones.

Wow, it didn't look like it was moving very quickly until it dived across the road.

hmm...

But around about 2 seconds til the end, the lorry coming towards the camera looked like it cut up/chopped up a car.

Bad times

not much use to those on other side of the road!

I once saw the carnage after somethign similar to this, one smashed up bus in the oncoming lanes, one artic(well the rear doors are all i could see) in the bush my side of the M/way and around 5/6 smashed up cars on both sides.

No idea what happened and not sure on injuries but its mad how bad things can go wrong.

Well i have no idea where it was

it was sent ot me via email from Cloggsy (some of you will remember him;))

and i have watched it over and over again, still cannot see a clear reason for it other than has been stated like asleep etc

my money though is on some sort of failure as it was so quick and violent

I would speculate that the left brake to the tractor lost pressure suddenly and jammed on???

F**k me, thats some scary stuff.
Fatalities there for sure.
Hope no bikers involved, leathers wouldnt have helped.

When lorries like this are running , pressurised air is used to keep the brakes in the "Away" position , ie off the brakes . When pressure is lost or the engine is turned off , the brake vents and closes , stopping the vehicle from moving . My guess is that the Left hand side has failed in some way , jammed right on , caused the Lorry to veer Left in a sharpish fashion and the rest is history :(

Feck knows, looked proper horrid.

Many years ago in a different life, inhabited by me and well oiled (where ever he is these days) I used to have to break trucks for a living. We had one problem that cracked spring hangers had been identified in the field and nobody knew what would happen under load should a sudden catastrophic suspension failure occur.

so modified multipart spring hangers fabricated, held together with explosive bolts and muggins behind the wheel. First bang I run off the track. So what happens if you fight it.

Next bang 60 mph I try to steer, straight into one of the bridges on the old test track and over £100,000 of damage to bridge/truck.

My guess either a rear wheel blow out or catastrophic suspension failure.

i sat there for a good 30 secs wondering what was wrong with the picture before i realised it was a film....lol

that is some terrifying stuff! a miracle more cars went taken out while stopping in the right hand lanes

Agreed, falling asleep etc causes wandering vehicles, that turn is extremely sudden.

The white van driver would have been lucky to get out alive too, right at the very end of the clip, you can see white smoke start to come very quickly out of the rear of the van.......that would point to an aggressive fire! To swerve like that you'd think that either there was tyre blowout, propshaft went and lodged the steering hard left or the driver had a heart attack type emergency and couldn't control what he was doing. I'd say that there would have been at least 4 deaths if there was one person in each lorry, the two car drivers and more if the Van driver or others that we can't see got caught up.

What a horrible video. Makes you think doesn't it!

to be fair the back end of the van did get squashed so i'd imagine the handling would be somewhat impaired.

I spose its possible that the lorry driver could have had some sort of seizure or fit that caused him to slump on the wheel and fall off to the left, causing the sudden turn.

Well spotted, had to watch it back a couple of times to see what happens to the lead car of those 2. Jeez i'd hate to think what speed he got hit at and what the outcome of it was cos i'm sure it wasn't pretty. :(

for the record 7 people were killed in that crash, a failure on the lorrys left suspension was the cause of the accident.

driver of lorry that swerved, driver of the lorry hit, three people in the mercedes following the 2nd lorry and 2 people in the car following the mercedes. death toll includes 2 children

very unsettling watching such a video where you know people lost their lives.

im not suggesting to remove it at all but just makes me feel very odd, hard to explain tbh.

I feel the same really. I watched it expecting someone to do something stupid like come off at the junction then reverse back up to rejoin the carriageway??
When you see the impact, you know people dies and so it very unsettling. I think in part because you are witness to the moment that people lost their lives and also, it feels a bit wrong to watch because there are families out there that may know that thi is being watched and how awful would that feel.

I'd never say to remove videos like this, but I won't be watching it over and over. Once and I didn't really expect the outcome, a second time to figure out what happened. I don't want to look again.
