Can't search on oil as too short but checked 10 pages of threads and nothing mentioned even though I am sure it has been asked before so sorry for asking again :(

I think that the oil I need in my SV is Semi Synth 10w40 and although mobil extra is recommended by the dealer it is near impossible to order online. I have found this http://www.intobikes.co.uk/products?id=002707 which is £30 for 4l incl postage, does this seem about right and also can anyone tell me how much oil goes into the SV650 to move from lower to higher level on the window? (don't want to overfill and is a pain to fill and keep checking on your own!!!!!!

Thanks in advance for advice

pretty sure it says "2700ml" next to the oil window and halfords does have proper motorcycle oil by the likes of castrol. 99% certain it's 10w40 you need as well :) best bet is to pour the oil in bit by bit and keep checking the window as some people report pouring more than 2700ml in only to see that the oil is no where near full enough... :)

Semi synthetic, 10w 40.

Do check the oil, remember that once you have put in fresh oil, run the engine (check the oil light goes out!) and then re-check the oil level...it may have dropped (remember to have the bike upright, off the sidestand...this might sound silly but some people do check their oil on the sidestand and are mortified when they cant see any oil in the window)

it sounds silly and it is, but I've done this lol. Then I filled it up to the line and felt proud of myself, only to find out that it was over filled once stood upright = dunce

Cheers, surely 2.7l of oil cannot be right?????? That means I have to put in £20 worth of oil for every 5-600 miles (this is how long it has taken to go from top to bottom line on the window)

Looks like this is the Halfords stuff http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_storeId_10001_catalogId_10151_productId_22 1725_langId_-1_categoryId_165507

2.7L total not from top of the window to bottom , top to bottom is probably about a litre or something.

I did wonder!!! Sounds better although even 1l per 500 miles seems high?

If you look on the side of the bike where you put oil, it tell you have much you need to put in (well it does on mine) I belive its 2300ml of oil you put in. Don't over fill it, ensure the filter is forming a seal. I have manged to change the oil on my bike, be nice.

Following the info on Siq thread oil you can't go wrong. I put the HG oil in my bike £13 or so for 4 litres.

Go to your local Heine Gericke and get their own brand semi-synth oil, £13.99 for 4 litres and is good stuff. To top up your oil level from lower mark to upper is about 300ml IIRC, but don't put in a measured amount, just what it needs. You should check your oil before every ride, to make sure you do not ride with too little oil.

To properly check your oil, it needs to be warm, say 5 minutes after a ride, with the bike upright (not on side stand) and on level ground. If it is low, add a small amount of oil, and then re-check as above. Repeat until oil is just below the top mark on the sight glass. I have got into the habit of checking my oil after getting the bike out of the garage and also before putting it away after a ride.

Cheers, unfortiunately my nearest HG is over 30 miles away so cheaper for me to get the 5l Halfords version.

I do check mine level and after warm so know that I now need to top up, 300ml sounds more reasonable, the reason I asked is it is soooo muc easier to know the difference in levels that keep checking and hopping on and off the bike :(

Having just filled from min to max it was only around 300ml so 300ml for 500 miles seems a bit more sensible so doesn't lok like any issue unless 1500 miles on a litre is still high?

If the oil level is a bit low just tilt the bike a bit more towards you and it soon comes up the glass. Simples.

that kind of defeats the object...because if the bike is upright, and the oil dosnt show, but tipping it frther towards you makes the oil show, this dosnt mean tehre is any more oil in the engine ;)

Or get a longer dipstick if yours doesn't reach the oil.

Haynes do get things wrong on a regular basis. They'll tell you to put brake pistons in with brake fluid, which then siezes them up as soon as you show them a bit of salt... Or clymer who get pictures of cam sprockets the wrong way round...

As far as what oil, mine's currently full of random cheap diesel car oil, since all the nice castrol bike oil made a bid for freedom at the glencoe massacre (Sally drank it I think) and I couldn't find any up there. It seems to make not the slightest bit of difference. I might try olive oil next, or perhaps fish juice.

(Curiously, a lot of SV Riders use Shell Rotella diesel oil in their SVs, apparently it's ace).

hhhmmm.. interesting. i know that diesel engine oils have more cleaners in them but i dont know if there is the same modifiers as car engine oils... which as we know ruins wet clutches...
