Ive been looking at this this morning. Mine atm is 70-75bhm... Quite high really. Though I do think it might be down to dehydration and lack of sleep that its a little high so ill have to do a test some time when I dont feel like crap...

Anyway it put me onto thinking I wonder what other people's are...

Id do a Poll but there are simply too many options Id need, age and range of heart rate...

Anyway, if you want to state age, resting heart rate, size/fitness level and Sex then it might give us all an idea of what we should be aiming for.

Try to be calm sat down and make sure you have had enough sleep and enough to drink as that can make a massive difference.

Mine,
Age: 23 ,
Resting heart rate: ~70
Fitness level: not good, slim
Sex: Male

EDIT can a mod move this to Idle banter... see told you I was tired^^

How are you measuring your resting rate Nick? There is a specific procedure for getting your true resting rate. 70 is pretty high for a young man.

Resting heart rate should only be measured immediately after waking up, not after you've been up a while.

Mine is 72 at the moment, sat in front of my computer doing work, so not exactly resting. I'm male, 43 and reasonably fit, but have had a few late nights this week.

11 per 10 secs = 66bpm which is really good for me, 6 weeks ago it was 80. I think my dieting and gym regime is actually doing my heart rate really good. May even check me blood pressure soon, that is normally very high.

Porker - 17 Stone 3, reasonably fit-ish now.
66bpm
Hypertension runs in the family, haven't been told I also have it but there is a worry whenever I go quaks with my BP.

when I was in Frimly Park just after a collaps lung op, my resting heart rate was 36 bpm... I was a lot fitter back in 1996 btw ;-)

Ive done some searches and apparently 70 is average... So considering I got 4 hours sleep, Im dehydrated because the water here on base tasted of filth (and there are no shops within 10 miles) my Sgt is telling me I shouldnt leave the RAF and I wont be able to get a job... I think its not too bad.

As to testing, hold a pulse point (im sure you have to know one) and count the pulses in a set time... 10 seconds seems popular but the longer the better, then multiply upto what it would be for 60 seconds.

Simples

I've always had a bit of a high heart rate, even when I was young and doing a lot of training, well riding around a lot for fun. Guess im just made that way.

I have been drinking water, still feel a little low on drink, but its now down to 65...

Ill be getting out a lot more on the MTB so that should help me :)

have to agree 70 is a bit high,
currently 66
however i'm 36, 3 st overweight, recooperating from man flu and unable to do more than moderate physical exersion. my resting rate in the hosp was 212 (not a typo) and it took over a year to get down below a hundred.

Historically at my fittest it hovered about 40.

As luckypants said, it needs to be taken first thing, as soon as you wake up, before even sitting up in bed.

I don`t think you can say whether Nicks resting heart rate is abnormal or not! A resting heart rate for women is considered “normal” if it is between 70-80 a minute, I can`t recall the exact figure for men but I know it is slightly lower. As someone has already said the only accurate measurement is after a good sleep.

Some people simply have a higher/lower resting heart rate that cannot be attributed to any specific cause and a resting heart rate really isn’t an effective way of measuring the health of a person although they say anything above 84 beats per minute is considered dangerous.

I think a much better method of checking your physical fitness is to measure your heart rate after exercise and see how long it takes to get back to resting rate. This is called the recovery rate and is much more important when looking at how fit you are.

Well said. Just thought id ask I didnt start this thread to find out fitness, it was just to see what other peoples was... Its interesting so far. I do seem to have a faster rate than most... Must be all the air my massive brain needs :p

Think ill be doing more fitness (not that im a couch potato) to try and lower the Heart rate.

Very unfit - little choice following RTA nearly 4 yrs back - women drivers.

Snap shots do give an indication but trends are important. Mine reads bad but the trend is good.

My resting heart rate is more than my age
My weight in kilos is more than my RHR
My BP is roughly (RHR/7)squared over RHR

I try not to worry about it too much.

My Grandad has very low blood pressure and has had a heart attack and his resting heart rate is around 40 bpm - it seems heart attacks can cause you to have a slow heart, but I don't know the science behind it!

10 in 10 seconds -> 60 bpm

somewhere around 63 kg
5 ft 6

Last two times I went to the doctor (each time for that sign up medical) they've each said about high blood pressure this n'that, irregular heart beat the other blah blah blah & the need to come back rather soon for more tests.

I figure what do they know? I'm not dead.

rule of thumb: if it hurts, rub some beer on it.

Lol at this thread.

I'm reading everyone's resting heart rates with a bit of disbelief if I'm honest (and envy). I consider myself pretty fit (although I don't play much sport like I used to), 27 years old and my heart rate measured just now was 76 bpm. To me that does seem a little high, but even when I was playing football/rugby 3 times a week my heart rate was high 60s!

Its common for tri athletes and professional cyclists to have heart rates in the high 20s 30s and 40s.........but what are you lot, professional sports people??

Incidently, a heart rate of 72 bpm minute is supposedly perfectly normal for a young healthy male, so Ive understood.

Not at all, just cos the 'average' is 72 or whatever, doesn't mean that's what is the best / healthiest, etc.

The average dress size for women in UK is now 16 I believe, that doesn't mean it's the 'best' does it?! :D

I don't get this thread....your all still breathing aren't you??
What difference does it make what your resting heart rate is?

I've got very healthy low blood pressure, I'm as unfit as a out of tune fiddle, but thats my doing, I can't do strenuous exercise, because if I do, my limbs will fall off(ok they won't but they'll be seriously injured) I'm happy with just breathing thankyou very much!

if you mean a 'bit of a flutter' now and again it's completely normal- mine does it too and my mate who is a top cardiac physiologist says it's fine- it's actually more prevalent in fit healthy people. Nout to worry about :)
