here are some i managed to get from donington before i was kicked out of the area i found, i really cant believe the organization issues they have there, i had to shoot through not 1 but 2 metal fences!! that was all the way around the circuit... donington has to be one of if not the, worst circuit for spectators and photographers unless your the other side of the fence.. these were taking on a Eos 40D with a 100-300 f4 at an iso of between 200-620, and i used my 2x converter in a few to, which normaly works a treat only a little sharpness loss.. these are so soft due to the fences and the distance... i for one am glad it moving to silverstone.. maybe they can hook up the MotoGP fans with some better service for the huge amount of money you pay... anyway practice round pictures taken at Goddards ..

Lyle, some crackers as usual mate.
How do you cope with taking shots with fences in the way? Is a press pass wayyyyy too much?

If you stand by the Foggy Esses and have a long lens you can stand up on the bank and shoot over the top of the fence.
Failing that I get as close to the safety fence as I can, theres a couple of places where you can get right up close to it and shove your lens through the chain link itself, but then it can be tricky as you have to be really quick on the shutter.
I tend to stand back a little and set the camera on manual focus so and then set it up so that its focused on on particualr point of the track and then pan / track the bikes in the view finder and then try and fire the shutter at the precise point I've set the focus up for.
It either works or it doesnt, but when it does it usually works out OK.
Its just practise at the end of day....

Yeah, thats what I thought.

thats right you just focus through the fence but it softens the **** out of it when there is two so.. what can you do lol, press passes are only given to magazine and reporter people but you need a letter of intent from a mag or a publication.. its really ****
as you can see above its soft and washed out even after process but look at this one
with no fences from the WSB..

Where were you stood when you took those and got chucked out.
Used to be a good spot pretty much opposite the apex to goddards, but they've covered it up with "Visit Spain" advertising boards...

I think it's time we formed a photo agency, with slightly unconventional goals. The aim is to sell enough pictures to get us press passes and pay for some shiny Nikon/Canon toys. Any profits should be re-invested on camera kit and trips to race venues.
I reckon we need about three staff who are willing to spend their weekends watching the bikes and turning out great pictures. Plus at least one person with contacts in the biking press who can market our work.
Anyone got the right contacts??
Keith.

Pete M on here runs a website called "Twowheelsontrack" I've sent him some of my pics to him before which he used.
I wander what he might be able to get...

IMO, there are a few hurdles but they're not insurmountable.
1) Start with the right people :D
2) Get our work on some editors desks and into print
3) Get enough cashflow to pay for press passes
4) Keep finding new styles so it's not just more of the same every time
I think 2 and 4 are the tough ones.
Keith.

you are so right, mine normally end up looking the same as I like a certain style of pic, its quite tricky at some circuits to get different pics or those from a different perspective.
I made a point now of for at least one session trying to stand in a different place and get a different angle or a different type of shot...

Good point, finding new styles is actually hard. Although my pictures are no good. I sat in exactly the same spot I did this Saturday for the classics where I sat for the Renault Series. Outcome was millions of the same picture.

Yeah, at Brands I spent too much time at Druids. So I've got lots of photos of riders with their knees down but not much variety. Must do better next time...

ketih, you gonna be at brands for the BSB? im hoping to go friday, saturday and sunday. Friday as a sort of practice-photography day then i can make a note of who to look out for etc when the real action starts :D
druids is fun, i got some good pictures there from the track day a few weeks back, but if only we could stand on the inside of paddock hill bend  I'm gonna try down by bottom bend (graham hill bend is it?) on the inside, with my 200mm lense I should be able to get enough zoom to get a decent picture, although even with the lowest f number it might not look so great...
Stirlings and hawthorn FTW though!!
