After 3 years of constantly saying I'm never ever going to get a car I finally caved in yesterday and brought one. :(
The reason for it was last years winter scared the be Jesus out of me. Going out at 7am and crawling my way to work at 30 mph not knowing if the bit of road 2 foot in front was tarmac or black ice isn't my idea of fun.

So I present to you Milly Metro.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v625/Seggons/Car/DSC00387.jpg

Now don't all laugh at once, I will agree that it's not the best looking motor out there and yes it is a bit of a squeeze for me inside. The body work condition is dam good with no scratches, dents or cracks. The only dodgy bit is a slight bit of rusting on one of the rear wheel arches.

Inside everything is spotless with no marks or tears to any of the seats. It's even got the original Metro radio with it and I'll be able to boogie to that once I figure out how to decode it without the code. It's even got an alarm, immobiliser and remote central locking.

The most amazing thing about it is this...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v625/Seggons/Car/STA72615.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v625/Seggons/Car/STA72618.jpg

Compare the dates and the mileage between the 2 certificates. It's done 13 miles in 7 years. The engine runs as quite as a mouse, it's had a new middle box exhaust put in and all the tyres still have plenty of tread on them.

The car cost me a whopping £375, insurence was £681.50 TPFT and tax will be £120 for 12 months. Just got to wait till the start of next month before I can tax it and pick it up.

Before anyone gets the wrong idea no I'm not selling the bike, it was proving too costly to use it as a commuter, shopper and pleasure toy. So hopefully having the car will save me money in the long term.

Happy Days! :D

yup, my nephew is 18 and has a Fiesta - that was £1000 TPFT.

Wish I could drive a car to work, I'd certainly use it when the cats and dogs are falling and it's a brass monkeys January at 5am :)

It was with 1yrs no claims when that year's policy started! For some strange reason the Rovers are dirt cheap insurance. To insure a 1.1 fiesta it was more than double (£1300).

Again Seggons, Rover POWER! ;)

as much as i love my bike - and i really really do - sometimes its wonderful just to get up, shower, pick up keys and work bag, and leave. no planning to time for getting leathers on and off. no getting wet, and less boring journeys as you can have the radio on and no one can here you sing along! i know you cant filter, but sometimes when its torrential rain or its just one of those days or (like me) you need a reverse gear - its so worth it :D

no comment on choice of car however :P

For a person of my age (and the power of the car ;) ) that's pretty cheap considering I'm classed as high risk as is everyone under the age of 25. :D

Well I don't know, I have plans of trackdaying it at some point. :D

Consider your annual mileage, it knocked £18 off when going from 10K to 7K a year. Choice of car is critical because even though it maybe a 1.0L engine doesn't mean it will be cheap. For example I could put a Skoda Felicia 1.9D for the same price as the car I brought. Finally phone them up and when they say they cannot get it down any more they normally can. After all why would they want to sell you insurance for £500 when they can do it for £600. :D

Again Seggons, Rover POWER! ;)

Amen to that. Also the power of 4 gears. :D

no comment on choice of car however :P

There's was me going to use it as a pulling magnet. Mind you if posh people with Beemers have small willys, what does my car say about me ay?

Sean_C

I'm after an Astra as it's a big enough car with a decent engine, but really low insurance group. Only 18 quid off for reducing mileage? Not worth it really, I'll be doing at least 10k I reckon.

but if you're dirt broke like me, £18 is over one tank of petrol for my bike, so it really is worth it if you dont really have to money to spend. then again i cant relaly talk as my last car was a 2.0l petrol golf gti and cost a fortune to insure! lol

Sean_C

Yes, fair enough, but I don't feel like lying about the mileage I'd do for the sake of £18 difference.

i dont think he lied - i tihnk he just thought about it - its so much easier just to round it off to 10k when you know its somewhere near there (>5k) and not actually work it out!

Sean_C
26-07-09, 12:30 PM
Whatever the case is, I've worked out I'd do 12k a year, so I'll just have to see what the quotes say as I can't get round that aspect of it.

I dont know how young-uns afford insurance these days, its extortinate.:(
When i first passed my test in 89' it was the height of the car theft era in my city so premiums were inflated even then, i paid about £300 tpft for a mini back then and considering wages were less than £80 a week it seemed very high.
But now its got ridiculous, some kids paying £2k for a car worth £2k, madness.

It's strange that I'm with Express Insurance for both car and bike. On the bike I said 10k and the bloke on the other end of the phone said anything over 8k is classed as unlimited. Yet with a car they need to know your annual mileage.

Thats very good actually.

My chavvy 1.4sri Corsa, is a 01' model, is worth around 3K, done 50K miles, and my insurance is £1400 TPFT.
It works out roughly £1 per cc for the average young male in a average young persons car.

Since I had a little mishap in it, resulting in a claim against me, my renewal is going to be, a very reasonable, £2000 :|
Guess I will be keeping the bike and flogging the car :)

My Car insurance is not much only £540 on Fully comp, but i have been driving 4 yrs so it helps

Seggons
26-07-09, 04:01 PM
The really strange thing is the difference for me between fully comp and TPFT was only about £50. The really big turn off was the compulsory excess was £350 which I really didn't want where as it was £100 TPFT.

Try using CIS (Co-operative Insurance). Make your dad the main driver and you as a named one (you'll still get your own NCB build up. My first car was a fiat punto 1.2L and I paid ~600 FC. Now I'm insured on my brother's 1.6L ford focus and with the four of us (I'm 18 now and my brother's 21) all insured on it we're paying about £800 FC. Get a quote online and then phone them and tell them to lower the price.
I found those comparison sites rubbish when looking for car insurance

Sean_C
26-07-09, 05:04 PM
That takes it down another 400 quid, but it'd be fraud in my case, as the only reason dad is on the quote is to reduce the price :p Still, if they can do it 400 quid less straight away, I sure as hell will get the price down to that with me as main driver.

Scott, did you get it at Wyboston by any chance?

Well it's your call obviously. I can't think of any way they could prove that you were driving it all the time. They'd need solid evidence to take you to court for fraud, speculation wouldn't be enough. I don't know you or what £400 means, but personally I'd take the saving and be a named driver
How much is it with CIS with you as the main driver and your dad as a named one?

Scott, if you find another one, you'll have a pair of roller skates ;). So does this mean you're giving the bike up? :( . Insurance is expensive for your age group mate, Jane's son has a metro (get together and use them on alternate days lol) and its the same.

It feels like a roller skate when I'm in it. There's not a chance I'll give my bike up. I've done 23,000 miles on my bike in a year and a half. It's now getting to the point where not only is it being serviced every other month but things are starting to wear and corrode. So each service needs an extra £20 here for that part and £30 there for another.

At least with a car I can get the bodywork sorted and get the upgrades I've always wanted to do done on it.

Whats that next to the left headlight?

I like a man with a keen eye for detail. ;) The indicator lens cap is missing. :)

Car insurance for youngsters is a joke - easy money for the companies, because they know them youngsters have no choice...

I've a big '04 mondeo TDCI Ghia X (Lovely big cruiser), I got that for a song, and am only paying £260 FC, with a £150 excess. That's not bad, but I've full car 5 years NCB bonus, a trucker, and 8years bike NCB to lower it too...

Once the kids get to 25, insurance doesn't become an issue. Fit the cars with a speed restrictor..... set to 56mph for a year, then increase the governer setting to 65 the next, and 75 the next. Give them 3 years driving at low speeds to give them safety experience. Once the 3 years are up, then de-restrict the car. That's what I'm going to do whenever, and if I ever get married and have kids......:rolleyes:

Things tonight have just gone from bad to worse. I did all my quotes and my final insurance setup on the thinking that my 2 years NCD on the bike could also be used for the car. But after a simple phone call to ask for proof of NCD I find bike NCD is incompatible with a car so my policy is now void and has to be redone.

The ironic thing was I got passed to the same bloke that I first set it up with which was nice. I said to him that all I can afford is £300 on top of what I've already paid which he took a sharp intake of breath.

After 30 minutes of deliberation the lowest he could possibly get it was £300 + £8 a month over 11 months, all this on top of £650 that I had already paid. After much reluctance I give him my card details and we said our good byes.

5 minutes goes past and the phone rings, it's the same bloke from the insurance company to tell me the payments been refused. I replied with great concern that there's no reason for it to be so I went online to find out why. The penny then dropped and I realised what I'd done, I looked at the balance figure rather then the available balance figure. 2 cheques were still pending so I only had £222 in my account to which I said to him I'm ready to cancel because I cannot afford it.

He said the last option was to take £200 and put the rest on the finance to which I agreed. So my overall total for a £400 car is £998. I feel royally ripped off and now have the challenge of feeding myself. :(
