Wow, they are great cars! There should be plently of tuning parts and it should be reliably tunable aswell, given it formed the basis of toyota's rally cars some 15 years ago now (carlos sainz anyone?)

giz a go mate!:D

Yeah i always wanted a carlos (think thats the shape didier oriel whos name i definatley do not know how to spell used to rally aswell, his toyota castrol team was banned one year due to modifying the turbo or summit :p) but to be honest they are gettin on a bit now and they aren't as powerful neither i did try and wait for a GT4 WRC but i couldn't wait long enough due to my impatiant nature lol.

Good stuff they will look sh*t hot mate, Do you have a dump valve fitted if not have you tried it with the standard one off and plug the airbox sound mint.

Im jealous as f*ck now, I am off to buy another one lol

Nice and its a toyota will last for ages :thumright: my mate has a 1989 corrola 1.3, got it with something like 60k on it one owner from new and it still had all the original stuff on it from when it was new, when he got it a year ago including the original number plates! and he hasnt had a thing go wrong with it aprt from his rr shocks are knackered and his Dad is a toyota mechanic but works at home but in the past has worked for toyota dealers, in fact most of my mates family own toyotas!

Correct me if i wrong but im sure dump valves bugger the turbo and arent worth the hassle in the long run.

Correct me if i wrong but im sure dump valves bugger the turbo and arent worth the hassle in the long run.

Without a dump valve, when the throttle was closed, the build up of boost pressure would be immense, very similar to closing a quickly flowing water tap. This excess of pressure, (which could be over five times the running boost pressure), would put the components of the system under a great strain. It would try to burst the intercooler and pipework. More significantly, it would put a large strain on the turbocharger itself, firstly stalling the compressor shaft, then trying to force the compressor wheel out of the turbo, against its bearings.
So, the dump valve prevents mechanical damage to the intercooler & turbo pipework, prolongs turbocharger life, and prevents excessive turbo - lag that would be caused by the compressor shaft stalling.

I just copied that from another site.

The gt4 st205's all have dump valve's fitted as standard but instead of venting into atmosphere ( ssssccchhh noise ) vent into the airbox which goes back through the intake ( recirc dump valve ) but you can unbolt it fromn the airbox and cover the hole left, and its amazingly loud. It is a sound of much pimpness :)

A whole new perspective on what i heard and was under the impression of

Ahhhhhh, see my thoughts where

Pressure is stored up by the dump valve meaning that the air couldnt escape and was then released in one go instead of a steady flow, yet that says it helps the turbo, hmmmm

From what i remember from messing with cars years ago, originally the dump valve was installed to a, get rid of pressure b, it helps keep the compressor spinning instead of on/off,on/off due to pressure release.
So that doesnt put as much strain on the bearings etc.
Early turbo's on mainstream cars were generally unreliable, bearings were not upto the job.
Please feel free to correct me if im wrong

Yeah spot on, fitting a dump valve prevents comp stall and reduces turb o lag too.

I had read about changing the stock recirc valve to allow it to discharge to atmosphere but i didn't want to risk knacking it in anyway, i am awaiting delivery on a forge one should be here in a day or 2 then im going to drive round where i live making loads of noise like a moron till the novelty wears off :p

Also, feeding hot air back into the airbox is never good, because the compression is not ideal the temperature does not drop down to original level.
Not sure how much of an effect it has in practice, but it could cause detonation.
