View Full Version : Half an hour for a pair of leathers

Got a new pair of leather trousers today. Has just taken me half an hour to get the tight waist band over ma bum!!
How much do leathers slacken off? I mean I have them on, and zipped up and fastened fully and they feel a bit too tight but I am aware leather does slacken, just don't want to wear them too much incase they are too tight and I need to send them back!

Two methods for breaking in leathers - sit on sofa and watch TV, or hoover. Both put you in a similar position to riding, you choose which you prefer :D
Or....you know ...wild idea i know....but try riding?
Milky Bar Kid

Can't ride just now, busted shoulder! Yeah, do you guys think these will be ok then if I have them on and fastened and stuff?

try it, doesn't matter you can always take them back, mine have broken in now and are really comfy

If you can sit in them (fastened) are not going blue and can breathe, that's a start.
They *will* stretch. If you like the rest of the fit, and they don't give enough around the waist, it is not expensive to get the clasp moved at a later date.
Do bear in mind if you need your back protecter to fit inside the waist band (needed if it is a full-length one and you plan to zip the trousers to your jacket).

They are fastened fully and dont feel *TOO* bad, I have just sat an ate my tea in them so think that speaks volumes.
The problem seems to be the waist zip, it seems to be the tight bit, the rest of the fit is good and they dont feel uncomfortable, just the zip bit at the waist.

MBK, it's an issue most women have, so you are not alone. Race pants are high-waisted (and therefore narrow around the waist), and the zip is usually quite shallow.
All of this means that the actual opening available (when pulling them on) is quite a squeeze to get over the top of the thighs and hips. If this is the case for you, then I guess the trousers are 'working as intended', just don't leave loo breaks until the last minute :D

All depends what your backside looks like. If it's the size of Luxembourg then I would have laughed, but it might have been so cute it left me speechless.

Yeah, kinda thought that might be the case! Although , you would think that they would design womens pants to fit the majority of women who have big hips!

bike gear either fits or it dont, simples. yes leather will 'shape' to you in time but if the fit is crap to begin with then it will always be crap..

warning hun. If they feel tighter than snug, get the next size up. Yes they do give a bit...but by then you'll have bust the zip.
I have two sets of leather pants, both of which have bust zips,. I haven't worn them in around 3 years......theres definately no chance of getting in them now.
I ate too many pies :-(

What's the advantage of having tight leathers? Better with slightly loose so you can move easier, have some air to keep cool in the summer, and in winter you can get some extra clothes under them.

How does that work? If you're sliding down the road on your @r$e I don't think there will be a gap between you and the leather

You don't want loose leathers otherwise they bunch up when you slide and can trap your skin... which is very painful. Look at any racer and how tight theirs are. These are made to measure to would be a good indicator of tightness. You won't see a baggy-ass in sight.
In winter - better to have fitted leathers and wear something over the top.

You don't want them to be any bigger than they need to be because you can get skin trapped as has been said already, but also, where there is extra room for air to flow, warm clothes to fit.....there is extra room for the armour to move around and can be moved away from the areas it is designed to protect. Same with Textiles....get a snug fitting pair and invest in good quality thermals for the winter as you don't want to come off, hit the ground with a knee or shoulder and the impact knock the armour out of the way, exposing your joint to the brunt of the fall.
I should mention here, this is what I learned when I was looking into custom leathers so not speaking from experience!

MBK - you may have the wrong make. I tried loadsa different makes before I found ones that fit me. Richa didnt fit, Alpinestar didnt fit. The size 12 was too small and tight and 14 too big.
I finally tried lots of styles and finally I fit in RST. Hips and fit around the leg was perfect.
SO maybe you should send them back and try on different makes to see if you can get some suited for your shape.
My RST are tight but they go on OK, when I am hot I have trouble peeling them off as the lining sticks to my skin, you need that bit of flexibility so you are comfortable.
Maybe ya busted shoulder is the reason it took you half an hout to get them on LOL ;) I couldnt comtemplate pulling jeans on with mine.

They feel ok on the legs and bum, snug fitting but ok, its only really the very top part of the waist that feels a bit tight. These are RST, size 12...even though I'm a ten! It's odd because I have a much smaller waist than I do bum....
