I hired a van to get the bike to an anglesey track day last friday. Upon dropping it back off this morning we were was asked to sign an accident form for a scratch on the wing mirror that had occured prior to us taking hire of it which had not been recorded by the hire company.
Just wondering if we've got any sort of leg to stand on getting our £150 deposit back since it's hard to prove that they've cocked up basically.
I don't think you have really unless you can think of a way of proving you didn't do it

only way to avoid these things is to walk around the vehicle with one of their employees and point out any ickle mark/dent/defect and make them take a note before you take it away. else its a case of their word against yours im afraid :(
They probably manage to get mirrors paid for about half a dozen times using this tactic.
Cynical, moi? :smt068

My thoughts exactly, there's not much of an incentive for attention to detail when you can get someone else to pay for your mistakes.
I didn't pick up the van and the hire wasn't on my cc if it were I'd probably report fraudulent use to my bank, but nevermind lesson learnt.
Having worked in the car rental industry and been the fella that actually charges things back to the customer I would say that you are stuck with the charge if you signed for the vehicle without the damage.
However, if you would like to stand your ground, let them know that you will not be agreeing to the charges and that if it goes through you will be looking to get a solicitor to investigate the vehicles history.
So, if they have ever charged the damage to a previous customer or indeed, charged more than one customer and had no repairs carried out then they will more than likely back down.

was it raining perchance when you picked it up that hides sratches so you would not be liable for sratches on the vehicle as you could not do a full inspection upon pickup this is something i always make them write on the paperwork when i pickup a hire vehicle. worth a try

did they take photos of the van before you took it?
I work for an accident repair centre and we always take pics of the c/car and the custs car in their presence.
have u got a copy of the vehicle check off sheet you or the person who picked it up signed?
Check to see if theres a section on there for weather condition, there usually is. Then you can claim that it was missed as it was pessisting it down, after all thats what that sections there for.
Also check for any little iregularites(spelling?) on there e.g. the person not filling sections in ect. As you can say that if they didn't fill the whole sheet in correctly how do you know that they haven't marked all the damage down.
Also say that you wasn't aware that you was to check for small scratches, you was just lookin for big dents n stuff.
In my experience of the motor trade the customer who screams the loudest always wins!!!!!
Go in there and make a masaive scene in the middle of a full reception, :smt071:smt070they will not like that!:nomore::notworthy:
